Summary: In their ninth session, the distance between you doesn’t hold the way it used to. He stops following the structure. You stop redirecting as easily. What was avoided last session refuses to stay buried—and when it finally surfaces, it leaves no room for control, only the question of what happens when neither of you pulls back.

The knock is on time. Evening deepens, sun fading, shadows extending across polished floors.
Two taps.
You’re already aware of it before it lands.
“Come in.”
The door opens.
He steps inside.
Tension thickens, practically tangible. Each breath sharpens your senses.
Not in the way he moves—those are the same. Controlled. Measured. Familiar.
That control is wound so tight it threatens to shatter—brittle as glass.
As if something is holding him in place, forcing control where there used to be ease.
“Evening,” he says.
“Good evening.”
The door thuds shut behind him, just a shade too forceful.
It doesn’t demand attention—just sufficient to pique interest.
His hand lingers on the handle, knuckles clenched, gripping as if the metal secures him.
Like he’s anchoring himself to the world before he dares to let go.
He doesn't linger.
He makes no pause, maintaining his steady momentum.
Meeting your gaze isn’t immediate; his eyes delay.
Jacket off. Folded. Set aside.
His movements are exact, abrupt. They pierce the muteness.
He yanks the fabric straight, seeking order in the weave—neatness to cauterize chaos.
Smoothed once.
Then he stops himself.
He sits, never settling.
Posture stiff: squared shoulders, taut spine. A cage built from bone.
One hand, resting against his thigh, steadies him.
His other hand settles on the chair’s arm, fingers pressing into the upholstery, halting restless motion.
He holds perfect, brittle stillness, as if moving may shatter the air.
Calm—almost excessively so.
You study him.
“How has the week been?” you ask.
“Fine.”
The answer is immediate.
Flat.
No hesitation or processing.
A beat passes.
“Productive.”
His fingers dig into his thigh, fixing him to prevent drifting.
Not enough to be obvious.
Enough that you watch tension travel through his hand before it goes still again.
You tilt your head slightly.
“In what way?”
His jaw shifts, muscles tensed in a small, restrained motion. They stretch taut—like piano wire set to snap under pressure.
Just once.
It’s like he’s grinding a stone behind his teeth. His jaw works, as if to crush the words before they escape.
“Stayed busy.”
That’s not an answer.
You don’t point it out.
“And how did that feel?” you ask.
“Better.”
Another immediate response.
But this time—
There’s something beneath it.
Not calm.
Containment.
He moves his thumb back and forth, then abruptly halts the repetitive motion as he notices it.
Like he caught himself doing it.
You let the quietness sit for a second longer than usual.
He doesn’t fill it.
That’s new.
“Better how?” you ask.
His gaze finally lifts to you.
Direct.
Steady.
But not open.
Tension laces his gaze—he chooses not to look away.
“Less time to think.”
The words drop between you. Heavy as river stones, they sink straight to the bottom of the room.
You hold his gaze.
“And when you did think?”
A pause.
Not long.
But deliberate.
His fingers press hard into his leg, then relax.
“It didn’t stay where it was supposed to.”
There it is again.
You recognize the phrasing.
The feeling is rough now, stripped of detachment. Frustration overtakes—like ink, spilling across composure.
More… controlled.
“What didn’t stay where it was supposed to?” you ask.
His eyes don’t leave yours.
“Focus.”
His reply is clipped, every syllable exact.
“And what was it shifting to?”
You expect him to redirect.
To stay inside the structure.
He doesn’t.
“You know.”
The answer lies between you.
Not loud.
But pointed.
His jaw tightens immediately after.
A muscle flickers there—brief, but visible.
Like he’s already anticipating your response.
The room is still.
You don’t react immediately.
You don’t give that line anything to attach to.
You keep your voice level. “That’s not specific enough.” Doubt flickers—was the pause too long? Dialogue hangs, restraint contrasts tension.
His fingers curl slightly against the arm of the chair.
This time, he doesn’t stop it right away.
Tension pools in his knuckles. Skin blanches before he forces his hand to uncurl.
Again, his jaw hardens.
This time, it doesn’t fully smooth out.
He exhales—measured, laden with words he contains.
“You’re doing it again,” he says.
The shift is subtle.
Though unmistakable.
“Doing what?” you ask.
“Redirecting.”
The word isn’t accusatory.
But it isn’t neutral either.
His eyes fix on yours—unyielding and intense.
You hold it back.
“That’s part of the process,” you say.
“That’s not what I meant.”
This time, the response is quicker than his earlier answers—less filtered.
His hand shifts again—this time lifting slightly from the chair before settling back down.
Like he almost gestured.
Stopped himself.
You wait.
He leans back, carving space—distance becomes his guard.
Not relaxed.
He creates distance—a space he seemed to resent only moments before.
Tension lingers in his shoulders, not dropping or easing.
“You keep steering away from the point,” he says.
“And what point is that?” you ask.
A pause.
This one is longer.
His eyes flick—briefly, as he chooses his words more carefully.
Or maybe deciding how much to say.
Then back to you.
“The part that doesn’t fit,” he says.
Your posture remains unchanged.
“Then let’s define it clearly,” you reply.
His mouth presses into a thin line.
A flash of frustration crosses his visage—
and stays.
The calmness stretches.
Air tightens, static replaces calm. Impatience sparks, raw and hungry.
There’s friction in it.
And it’s starting to get to him.
You can see it now.
It's not just contained.
Wearing.
But persistently.
You don’t shift.
Don’t interrupt the peace he’s sitting in.
You let it hold.
Let him decide what to do with it.
He exhales through his nose—sharp, controlled.
His hand drags once over his thigh.
Stops.
Then again.
Slower.
He reaches for solid ground, finds air. His fingers close on nothing—longing for something real.
“You keep asking like you don’t already know,” he says.
The words aren’t raised.
But they land harder.
You hold his stare.
“If I knew, I wouldn’t ask,” you reply.
His jaw clenches instantly.
“That’s not true.”
The answer comes too fast.
He leans forward slightly.
Not quite connecting the gap between you.
But it changes the atmosphere between the two of you.
“You’re just not saying it.”
“And what exactly am I not saying?” you ask.
The evenness cracks. Your tone carries a vulnerability. The emotional distance narrows.
He releases a tense breath.
“You keep moving it away,” he says. “Every time it gets close to something real, you—”
He cuts himself off.
His jaw clenches tight.
“Then say it clearly,” you reply.
Less guided now.
The words come out more stable than they feel.
“You know what I mean,” he warns
“That’s not—”
“Last session,” he counters.
No hesitation.
Words fail to come.
And this time—
Your silence is no longer controlled.
It’s a reaction.
“That’s not what this is,” you riposte
“Yes, it is,” he replies, “It’s exactly what it is.”
You straighten slightly.
“We’re not going to make assumptions—”
“I’m not assuming anything,” he cuts abruptly.
Sharper.
“I was there,” he rebuts
You feel that.
“What are you trying to say?” you question
“That it didn’t just go away,” he says lowly, “It doesn’t stop just because we don’t talk about it.”
“That doesn’t mean we act on it.” You shoot back
There it is.
Your composure fractures—brief, but visible
“So that’s what this is?” he asks, “You’re just going to pretend it didn’t happen?”
“I’m not pretending anything.”
Too quick.
“Then what are you doing?” he disputes.
You can’t quite form a reply.
“That’s not what this space is for,” you say.
“We both know that’s not what this is anymore.”
Silence.
Tight.
“You’re acting like it didn’t happen,” he cuts in, running his hands through his hair aggressively.
“This isn’t—”
He cuts you off.
“Why not?” he protests, “You don’t get to do that,”
More precise now.
Real.
“Do what?” you ask
“Push it there and then act like I’m the one avoiding it,” he voices
“I’m not acting like anything.”
“You are,” he accuses, “what is it, then?”
Silence settles between you.
“That’s not the point,” you say quietly.
“It is the point,” he declares
He stands.
Abrupt.
And the structure disappears.
“Bucky, you know we—” you stop yourself, choosing your next words carefully.
“You’re forcing it into something it’s not.”
“And what is it?” he questions
You don’t answer.
“You keep saying it isn’t—but you won’t say what it is,” he huffs
You’re on your feet before you think.
Now it’s different—proximity shifts, the boundary between you is narrowing.
Nearer than before.
“That’s because it doesn’t need to be defined like that,” you say, sharper than you mean to.
“That’s not an answer,” he adds.
“I don’t need it to be one.”
The words come out sharper than you intended.
“Yeah,” he says quietly. “That’s what I thought.”
“What does that mean?” you let out a short, disbelieving breath.
“That you’re not as neutral as you’re pretending to be.”
It resonates, unyielding.
“That’s not what this is,” you say, denial thin, doubt and worry beneath your words.
He steps closer.
“Yeah,” he says, almost under his breath, “You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true,” you say barely.
His eyes drop.
Your lips.
You don’t look away.
“Then why does it feel like this?” he says, rougher now.
You don’t answer.
“You’re reading into it,” you say, too quickly.
“Yeah,” he utters, advancing closer by half a step.
“Sure,” he added sarcastically.
And that—
That does it.
“Then stop standing here like you didn’t feel it too,” throwing your hands in the air, frustrated.
Your words slice the quiet.
Raw and without restraint.
“You think I didn’t?” he says.
Low.
Heavy.
And then—
Something in him gives
He closes the distance.
One blink and you’re pressed back—
A low, caged sound escapes him, almost a growl, the last thread of restraint breaking down as he closes the distance for good.
Your back hits the wall as his hands hold your face, firm, controlled—
And then—
He kisses you.
Fierce and uncompromising.
Without hesitation.
All of it breaking at once.
For the briefest instant—
You freeze.
And then you pull him closer.
Your hand knots in the fabric at his chest, gripping so tightly that your fingertips dig into the weave, the sensation of his warmth and the subtle pull of the shirt grounding you as your knuckles strain. Each twist of your fingers intensifies the desperate need for stability, your grasp anchoring you to his presence in that breathless moment.
And the second you kiss him back—
He exhales into the kiss.
A rough, quiet sound—relief, unmistakable.
Like he didn’t know if you would.
Like he needed you to.
His hand braces against the wall beside your head while the other hand buries itself in your hair at the base of your neck, pulling you into a deeper kiss, trapping you against his tall frame.
The kiss shifts.
Still intense.
Still sharp.
But deeper now.
Your grip tightens
His breath is uneven.
Yours matches it.
And for a short time—
It lingers.
That dangerous, suspended moment.
Where neither of you stops.
Where it’s no longer impulse—
But choice.
