Villain’s phone rings and he picks up almost instantly. “Hello?...Henchman?...Yeah, I kn-ok, ok, calm down. I’ll be there as soon as I can be, alright? Stay there and don’t move.”
He waits for her to hang up before putting the phone back on the table. Standing up, he looks at Hero. “Henchman needs me to go pick her up, will you be alright waiting for him to be ready to leave? I know it’s a little risky with Superhero looking for you, but I don’t want to force him into anything.”
Hero stands with a smile, “Sure! We’ll just leave when he’s ready, I can come up with something for Superhero, don’t worry. Go help Henchman.”
“I’m just gonna let Vigilante know before I leave, so he’s not totally in the dark. Do you want to come with me? That way he can meet you officially?”
Hero shakes her head and sits back down, “I think it’s maybe best if he meets me in his own time. Just tell him I’m out here.”
Villain pulls his jacket on and nods before walking down the hall. He knocks on the door gently and waits for Vigilante’s soft welcome before pushing the door open. “Hey,” he whispers. Vigilante forces a smile and stands at the end of the bed. “I have to go get Henchman, but my friend is gonna stay out in the living room and she’ll take you to her house when you’re ready. But…” he says, taking another step toward the bed, “She has to be home soon. So don’t spend forever making her wait?”
Vigilante’s heart pounds in his chest, the idea of being alone with someone he’s never met without Villain to be a bumper was…alarming to say the least. But going out of the room and meeting her now was…terrifying. And if there’s one thing Vigilante knows, it’s that you choose alarming over terrifying every time. After a few deep breaths, Vigilante nods and smiles. Villain gives him a thumbs up and walks back out of the room, closing the door behind him.
Knowing that his time in the safety of Villain’s guest room was lessening, Vigilante kicks the covers off and sits on the bed with his legs crossed. He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes, listening to Villain and his friend swap pleasantries and Villain’s door close. He takes a moment to prepare himself, then he stands.
The clothes hang loosely on him, draping over his shoulders and pooling on the ground in their excess. He pulls on the back of his shirt to keep it tight around his neck and he rolls the pants up until they barely touch the ground.
The door pushes open, Hero barrels in. “Thought you could get away?” she hisses, getting in Vigilante’s face. “I told you I’d always find you.”
Vigilante whimpers and backs away, arms raising to protect his face on instinct.
Hero smiles and backs away just far enough that Vigilante relaxes a little. “What were you thinking, running away? You were so close to…everything. I mean, come on. Are you really this stupid?”
Vigilante shakes his head, “You were never going to let me go.”
Hero shakes her head and tuts, “Since when do you get to talk back?”
“You-” Vigilante whispers. He looks at the ground and takes a deep breath. “You don’t own me. Which means you don’t get to tell me what to do.”
“Oh, shut up!” Hero shouts. The back of her hand makes contact with Vigilante’s face and tears spring into his eyes. “What did you think was going to happen? Huh? Did you think he’d keep you safe? Maybe let you stay in his little room until you die?”
She stares at him expectantly, eyes drilling into his skull for an answer. “Well?”
“I thought he’d be able to help,” Vigilante whispers, voice wavering.
“‘I thought he’d be able to help,’ god, you sound so stupid.” Hero mocks. She grabs a fistfull of hair and pulls Vigilante down. “No one will ever help you. Because no one will believe you.”
He falls to the floor and stares up at her, tears now flowing freely from his eyes. “He said he’d help me. He doesn’t know about you. He can’t…”
“Ehhh! Wrong!” Hero shouts. “Of course he knows about me! You think he doesn’t have dozens of other people to call that could keep you ‘safe’? He called me because he knows you’re mine.”
Vigilante shakes his head, “No. He…he cares about me. He wouldn’t do this.”
Hero pulls him to his feet and drags him behind her, “But he did do this. And now we’re reunited.”
