Thomas steps out. Elin stands beside the door, smoking. The rain is beginning to pick up. He lingers on the porch.
ELIN: The rain isn't going to stop.
He looks at her.
THOMAS: How do you know?
ELIN: Everyone's already taking shelter.
THOMAS: You have a keen eye.
ELIN: Do you think I have a future in the police force?
THOMAS: I'll recommend your application, Miss Hale.
ELIN: You're very kind, Sergeant.
THOMAS: At your service.
He turns up the collar of his coat. He touches the brim of his hat and steps out into the rain.

He gestures to the empty space beside him. She looks around her and sits. They stay silent for a moment.
THOMAS: They cut down the old elm in front of St Mary's.
ELIN: I saw. The church looks smaller now.
A pause.
THOMAS: Why did you come to work here?
She doesn’t answer.

INT. LODGING HOUSE - RENTED BEDROOM - NIGHT
Elin inspects the sheets. Thomas watches her.
ELIN: The room will do.
They look at each other.
THOMAS: I've never come into a place like this without two or three of my men.
Elin smiles.
ELIN: I've never come into a place like this with a man. Much less two or three.
Thomas smiles back.

Christmas Day, 1890.

Thomas walks around the side of the house.
At the far end of the yard, Elin lies in the snow. Thomas stops, simply looking at her for a moment as flakes settle on her coat and hair.
He walks over.
THOMAS: It looks comfortable.
ELIN: The snow is perfect.
He lies down beside her.
