Review: Forest Flyer (iOS)
I didn't really know what I expected to get with Forest Flyer. It happened to be a free app, and so I downloaded it to give it a try. It's actually very good! I mean, it's a kids' game, but it is still very good.
Forest Flyer is a game in which you play as Robin the bird. She is a bird who lives in a beautiful forest, and you make her go around to do interesting things. You can explore the different hidden parts of the area, make pinecones fall from the trees, or play with musical frogs. You can even pop balloons!
The game is extraordinarily charming. It's very pleasant. I honestly didn't even mind keeping it running while I was working, just so I could listen to the sounds of the birds chirping and the rain falling. The forest is full of happy things, which is exactly what you want in a kids' game. There are actually quite a lot of things to do, considering the size of the forest itself. Most of these things are adorable and fun, such as Robin chirping and waving at you, Robin blowing a berry up like bubblegum, or Robin slamming her cute face into a cupcake that happens to be sitting on a tree.
My favorite part of the game is a small pump that's in the middle of the forest. If Robin hops on it a few times, rain will start to fall. You can hear thunder off in the distance while it rains. The rain doesn't actually change anything about the game, other than the weather that is occurring. It sounds fantastic, though, and I'm glad they added it.
There are parts of the game that I didn't like, such as the times when Robin burps awkwardly or when she goes up to the top of the tree and takes a dump. That being said, I feel that I child would happily giggle at these mischievous actions, so I'll give the game credit.
I have very few problems with Forest Flyer. The only one that stands out in my mind is the size of the game. The forest has lots to do in it, but the environment is very small. A child would find the repetition of these actions enjoyable, but you can literally get through the game in a matter of five minutes. That would be fine if the app was always free, but it's normally $2. It's not too bad of a price, and I'm sure that no parent would have an issue buying it for their child, but it's quite expensive if you look at it objectively.
That being said, Forest Flyer is an excellent game. I'm no connoisseur of kids' games, but I can appreciate this one. It does everything that I would expect a children's game to do. It's cute, it's charming, it's got lots of things to do, and it made my girlfriend go “aww” about 18000 times.
