Forfar, Scotland is known for the Coo (cow) o’ Forfar. A man left a tub of beer in his doorway to cool and a passing cow drank it up. The man tried to charge the owner of the cow for the beer, but a baillie ruled that if beer was drunk at the doorway it was a “stirrup cup”, a drink served to guests newly arrived or ready to leave, and to charge for it was an insult to Scottish hospitality. It became a custom in Forfar to encourage guests to “Be like the coo o’ Forfar, and take a stannin’ drink!”
