"I’m sorry for attacking you earlier," Pyro apologizes, breaking the silence after a long stretch when his lingering guilt feels like it's starting to taint an otherwise peaceful moment. "You didn't deserve it."

"Wouldn’t be the first time," Abolish dismisses his words like it's second nature, but his tone isn't dismissive. It feels more like a joke. And it leaves Pyro fighting against invisible forces tugging the corners of his lips up. He's really forgiven them to the degree he can joke about it.

"And yet you still found it in your heart to comfort me…" Vocalizing his realization leaves Pyro feeling more awestruck. He pulls his eyes away from Truffle's grave, looking Abolish in the face as if to assure him of his sincerity when he says, "you’re very kind."

Abolish shrugs and meets their eyes again. "You’re not so bad yourself," he guarantees with such authority that Pyro almost believes him. "At least when you aren’t backed into a corner."

"Too bad that seems to happen more often than not, aye?"

"A shame, really."

Pyro has always been a cornered, hungry animal. Abolish is the only person that makes him feel human, even when he's past the point of no return.

New York Circa - 2008, Abolish is sent to scout out an illusive new vampire in town that may have ties to gangs in the area. However, he can't seem to catch more than a glimpse of his target and what he does see only leaves him more confused. His brain must be playing tricks on him, because he could swear he's seeing Pyro everywhere. But Pyro is dead. He's been dead for nearly 200 years now... Hasn't he?

Abolish has always been a skilled hunter. Pyro is the one animal he let get away, and he can't tell if that decision or if the man himself is coming back to haunt him.

Double life, but the pairings are scrambled and it's actually a reality tv dating show?

If that sounds familiar, Hi! I'm WatcherForge, creator of Double Take, an AU that exactly as described above. Right now I'm writing a prequel and the Character References for every major character in this series.

I plan to start posting said Character Refs on the first day of September, leading up to the drop of the first chapter to the prequel to Double Take, on September 22nd. This is going to be some backstory on how Double Take was thought up and how each character got onto the show, along with why they want to be there in the first place.

If you've never heard of Double Take, fear not! This will be the PERFECT place for you to start, as this fic is going to be significantly shorter than the original story and comes with the benefit of knowing some stuff about the characters ahead of time. Or, feel free to pop over to Double Take and read that before the prequel drops! Reading in either order should be an equally enjoyable experience.

Mumbo K. Jumbo

Was the child of two hippies in a commune. He has no idea who his dad was, but his moms raised him and his non-biological sibling at exactly the same time in that community until they were teenagers. While his sibling took to the commune life, he very much did not. He enjoyed school, sci-fi, and modern technology much more than what they'd taught him as a kid. So when he was 15 he ran away and started going to high school, doing his best to catch up. It was a struggle, having to scrape by and teach himself how the world worked, but be managed to earn enough scholarships to go to college. At that point, he made absolutely certain that his dress and grooming was as perfectly maintained as he could manage -- partly to open more opportunities for himself, and partly as a way to rebel against the way he was raised. 

Mumbo put himself through college, taking on whatever work he needed to while he dove head first into studying film and practical redstone. During his second year of college he met his best friend and roommate for the next two years, Grian Moon. He met Pearl Moon through Grian and she became like a little sister to him, which made it much harder when his attempt at a romantic relationship with Grian blew up in his face. They made up a year later, but in the meantime Mumbo turned all his attention to his studies and getting into the film industry. When he finally managed to become to well known name within the industry, regularly finding work and getting paid a decent amount, he realized he doesn't really care about the fame of it all as long as he's doing what he loves.

Gem Taylor

Gem was raised by a loving family of hard working people that never had the means to afford more than their basic necessities, if that. No TV, no extracurriculars, no new clothes, barely enough for rent every month. Because of this, Gem found herself working just as hard as soon as possible. Be it mowing lawns at 11, baby sitting at 14, working two fast food jobs at 16, or helping her parents with whatever they had going on so they could take on twice the jobs, she was willing to do anything to help out her family. So, when a family friend offered 17 year old Gem a role in a movie he was directing she didn’t hesitate to say yes, even though she never liked the man. Unfortunately, every bad feeling she had about him was proven right when he offered to make her a star and pay her handsomely in exchange for… Favors. Of course, he didn’t take it well when she shot him down – He nearly cut her out of the movie but was unable to clear it with the producers so instead he cut her pay by half. It was then and there that Gem swore she would become a director herself so no one would ever have to deal with disgusting men like him and to outshine any of his accomplishments ten fold until his name was practically erased!

It was a struggle at first, but after graduating high school and working in the film industry for one year she got her first big break with Watcher Productions, directing a TV show called ‘The Second Life Series’ that skyrocketed her career. Now she’s in high demand for most new productions.

Grian Moon

Grian was the child of a teenage pregnancy; both of his biological parents were 17 when he was born. His mother abandoned him, but his dad did his best to raise Grian on his own. When Grian was 3, his dad met Pearl’s mom and got married. Pearl Essence Moon was born only a year later. Pearl’s mom was a vindictive woman that pretended to be the perfect mother the kids when their father was around and actively tormented them when he wasn’t. Grian did his best to protect Pearl from the abuse, often putting himself in harm’s way to keep her safe. It wasn’t until Grian was 15 that his dad finally managed to get a divorce from the evil woman and win custody of both of his children. His dad didn’t remarry until Grian was 20. 

Despite everything that was going on in his life, Grian managed to keep his grades up enough to get into a decent school, where he met Mumbo Jumbo through a shared math class in their second year. After introducing Mumbo to Pearl, the three became a tight knit group that enjoyed the party scene together. A year later, Grian and Mumbo dated for a few months, but it didn’t work out. They did manage to salvage their friendship afterwards, but life got busy. Now that Grian has graduated, he’s struggling to find work due to his poor digital footprint and has no luck in the romance department either.

Etho Slab

Etho grew up as the only child of Ellipse Slab and heir to Ladder Labs - a multi-billion dollar tech company. Despite rumors that his mom had Etho in vitro because she wanted to raise him solely to take over her company, she actually just wanted a child to love without the hassle of a romantic relationship. She supported Etho no matter his interests and is a role model he still looks up to. She even supported him when he started wearing face masks all the time to hide his rosacea. Luckily for both of them, Etho was a prodigy that graduated high school at 15 and finished college before he turned 20. But, because of that, he had a hard time making friends growing up. The one person he connected with was Bdubs Booko, a kid he met at the country club right after he turned 16. Even though Bdubs was only 11, they enjoyed pulling pranks and playing tennis together. 

Due to Etho's impressive breakthroughs in theoretical and practical application of Redstone mechanics, he made the cover of a number of magazines. And because of that, combined with his good looks, he became an overnight celebrity in the wider population, not just the niche communities. Etho now has a large fan base that call themselves "Etho Girls" and he's been featured on several television shows as a guest judge or interviewee. His lack of interest in actually being a celebrity only seems to make him more popular.
