Re: your tags: I was not joking in my previous post. Words' meanings change over time, so history is a poor argument to begin with, but the use of "gay" immediately before it was adopted by the gay community, ca. 1890-1910 or thereabouts, was as part of "gay cat," which was literally a hobo in a (strongly implied pedophelic) same sex relationship/mentorship with another hobo.

This is one of the reasons I'm angry at the singling out of "queer" as somehow particularly vicious or wrong. Literally all of the ugly uses that "queer" has seen for us? "Gay" has been used in the same ways. I hear "gay" as a slur way more often today, even.

And no, I'm not on board with "it's only a slur if you think it is" either - but I will say that context, visible intent, and usage matter.

OH GOD the Worst thing - okay, I haven't had a chance to play the game, but I want to cosplay Junkrat, he looks like he'd be fun to bounce around as at a con. I'm a trans guy, too, and trans guy Junkrat is a popular headcanon. There is. /so. much. porn./ of pre-bottom surgery trans!Junkrat, and it makes me /so fucking uncomfortable/. I /hate/ it. I almost never see kin, even the 'I literally AM this character' kin, actually acting like their kintypes. You'd think that you'd claim kinship with characters who're, y'know, similar to you personality- and hobby-wise, right? But that like, never happens. I think I'd be more open to fickin if they were more like that - a 'hey this character and I have similar interests and personality quirks, check 'em out!' A bit of insight on a person, instead of an excuse to harass people over petty bull.

The NuTrek/AoS movies are /very/ different from ToS - the focus is more on action than anything else, and being an Alternate Reality, the characters are pretty different, too. Kirk's a lot more reckless and rebellious, for one. The 2009 movie does involve Nimoy's Spock as a pretty key plot point, and Into Darkness has a cameo from him! Basically, it's best not to go in expecting the original series - if you treat it as a completely new series and characters, you'll enjoy it more!

Ye, I figured it would be different from the show in some ways, as movies often are–plus it’s an addition to a show that ended, ah, what, forty years ago? Since we’re talking about ToS, not Next Gen? Things are obviously going to differ between the two.

As I said, as long as it’s a sort of AU set-up, I’m fine. They aren’t technically fucking about with ToS’ canon–at least not horrifically. They have their own canon to fuck about with, and that’s reassuring.
