A Fool Am I

I was driving to the Travis Audubon Avian Art Tattoo Contest Award Ceremony today, and thought I was running late because I’m disorganized and Always Late for things. But I had to be on time since I was a judge.

Anyway, perched on the electrical wires on the side of the highway was a Peculiar Bird. Basically, it looked like a Fork-tailed Flycatcher, except those are Central & South American and have only been recorded in Texas on extremely rare ocassions. So it must have been some other black-tailed and black-capped flycatcher with an unusually long tail or something. I didn’t immediately pull over to take photos for various reasons, none of which are good enough in retrospect.

It WAS a Fork-tailed Flycatcher and I have no verifiable evidence other than “well it wasn’t a Scissor-tail!!!” So rare-bird alerts have been sent, and I guess I’m getting up at the buttcrack of dawn to go looking for it. Usually these vagrant birds hang out in some spot for a while, and with the weather we’ve been having (rain wind rain and more rain), he could just be hanging out by the river until he can go back south.

Anyway it turned out the doors opened at 7 but the event didn’t start until 8:30 so I wouldn’t have been late for anything if I’d stopped.
