Three front gardens in Edinburgh, Scotland, show how Buxus sempervirens (common box) can be pruned to provide the structure for a formal garden. This slow-growing evergreen shrub has a compact in habit, with small, glossy oval or oblong leaves. The major challenge at the present is the fungus box blight (Cylindrocladium buxicola) which causes brown leaves and bare patches, the disease occurs all year round, but is most prevalent in damp weather.
