THE MAN WHO SKIED DOWN EVEREST

A restored classic by the Film Detective

I really enjoy skiing but haven't done so since the eighties. It’s just got too expensive. I thought it was outrageous when Killington Ski Area in Vermont raised their all day pass to 25 bucks! Who has that kind of dough? Remember this was somewhere around 1985. Oh boy, if I could have only seen into the future. Nowadays the price has skyrocketed to new highs because of all the specialty gear and fashionable clothing that you can purchase. Now let's step back to 1970.

The Man Who Skied Down Everest is a 1975 documentary that tells the story of Japanese alpine skier Yuichiro Miura and his attempt to ski down nearly 7,000 feet face near the top of Everest. In reality, he skied a 6,600-foot section and slid uncontrollably down another 1000 feet or so. 

This is no small feet. There is no ski lift or tram to the top. You have to hike. Plus where he starts his descent is 26,000 feet just shy of the Death Zone. The so-called Death Zone is at an altitude of 26,247 feet and is where there is not enough oxygen in the air for humans to survive. Of the over 200 climbers who have died on Everest to date most have died in the Death Zone. Their bodies are still in the spot where they died because it is impossible to haul them down or bury them. To really give you an idea of how high he was and how dangerous this stunt was, he was as high or higher than most commercial jetliners fly.

The film is shot on 35 mm film with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 for all you techie geeks. For laymen, the film is shot super widescreen and looks awesome! The photography is stunning and the quality is top notch. The documentary starts in Kathmandu where over 800 people help carry food and equipment over 165 miles in 22 days. The visuals of the long line of people hiking the mountain with gear on their backs walking barefoot are astounding. The scenery is something most people on Earth will never see in person. The film is narrated by Douglas Rain who reads directly from Yuichiro Miura's diary so it is a bit haunting knowing what he is thinking throughout the expedition.

My question as I watched the film though is “What is the Point? As nicely done as the film itself is I question why Yuichiro Miura felt the need to spend so much money and time to ski down a very short section of Everest. I don't doubt his bravery though as he reached a speed in excess of 100 miles per hour in seconds. I understand adventure but this must have cost a tremendous amount of cash and man hours. Along the way 6 men were killed and that turned the expedition into a tragedy. With that said, I'm a bit torn with the beautiful way in which this was shot and the seemingly waste of resources (and life) the actual expedition was. I guess it brought some money into the region for the guides so that is a positive.

Who will enjoy this film? Skiers, mountaineers, hikers, people who enjoy old school documentaries and most anyone who has a curious bone in their body. This 1 hour 25 min film moves along meticulously and somewhat slowly, as a lot of information is covered, working up to the climactic, and short, ski run.

PRODUCER TO PRODUCER -- A Day for Night Review

Producer to Producer - 2nd Edition by Maureen A. Ryan

This is a large volume and is targeted at low budget independent filmmakers. 

I've worked on several low/no budget films and, at first glance, this book seemed overwhelming, but as I read I realized how informative and organized this book is. It comes in at nearly 400 pages, much bigger and thicker than most books on filmmaking. It is absolutely loaded with straightforward, step-by-step information on what you need to do to create a low budget film successfully, start to finish. No fluff, just fact-filled pages.

There are 22 chapters that cover everything from development, funding, casting, pre-production, safety, film festivals, and so much more. I've heard filmmakers say “boy if I had 2,000 bucks I could make a better movie than they did for 20,000 bucks.” (or whatever amount). These are filmmakers who aren't actually doing things correctly. I know, I've worked on plenty of what I call “guerrilla shoots” where you shoot in friends homes with friends as actors. It's lots of fun for sure and there is nothing wrong with it but after going through this book I can see where all of this can unravel quickly if for instance someone gets hurt on set and you have no insurance. Chapter 10 is all about insurance. It talks about why you need it, what you need, who to talk to and warns NEVER go into a shoot without it. These are the places where a budget is eaten up quickly but in the long run, can save you lots of money should something go wrong.

There are so many topics covered that the average low budget filmmaker just may not think of such as finding locations, feeding the crew, protecting equipment from theft, and post-production costs. It's all in here and tons of other information too. It's the most comprehensive book on the subject of low budget filmmaking that I've ever read.

I recommend that ANYONE who is working on a low budget indie film invest the bucks that this book costs. It will save you many headaches and create a safer shooting environment on your set by giving you the knowledge you need to create your movie safely and legally. You'll know that all your paperwork is in order, you'll learn how to do proper auditions for talent and you will learn how to market the finished product. Do you know when you need police on set or when you may need a security guard or even the fire department? Most indie filmmakers have no clue about much of this stuff. (Me included). It's all discussed in the book.

Get this filmmaking resource and have it on hand before, during, and after your next short or feature length movie. There are downloadable templates for budgeting and other tasks also. It's complete, thorough and a must have book for all low budget filmmakers.

JOE BULLET - A Day For Night Review

Joe Bullet, the ladies love him and men fear him. 

Joe (Ken Gampu) is the hero of the movie “Joe Bullet.” It was released in 1973, and has an all African cast and was banned by the apartheid government when it was originally released. It is a low budget film but a fun one to watch.

The story revolves around the main character, Joe Bullet, as he battles the bad guys to try to rescue two star players of the soccer team, The Eagles.

 Without these two players the championship soccer game, which is only one week away, will probably be a loss. The players have been kidnapped by corrupt gangsters who want to change the outcome of the championship in their favor. Can Joe find the players and defeat the criminals? He'll have to put all his martial arts skills to use and hopefully have a bit of luck as he's attacked by assassins, fighters, and booby traps.

The movie has all the elements you would expect in a 1970s low budget flick. Misaligned audio, bad acting, and cheesy effects, but of course these are what make these films so darned fun and enjoyable to watch. Interestingly, it may be the soccer aspect of the film that may turn off an American audience as soccer isn't as huge here as it is in other countries although I believe the sport is gaining momentum.

The film has been restored on this DVD and the picture quality is great. The audio is misaligned at times, but that was original to the film as I assume much of the dialog was overdubbed in post-production. I really enjoyed watching Abigail Kubeka as Joe's love interest Beauty. She sings, isn't afraid of anyone and, well, is easy on the eyes. Don't tell Joe Bullet I was looking at her though. He'll kick my ass.

Cheesy? Sure. Bad actors? An abundance. Is it worth a watch? Heck yea!

A Day for Night Review -- “The Black Dragon's Revenge”

“The Black Dragon's Revenge” is a 1970s Kung Fu Flick. I've only seen two or three Kung Fu movies in my lifetime, so this one is new ground for me. 

Even though the genre has been around for decades, I never got into watching these low budget films even when I was a kid in the 70s. They didn't interest me.

I do remember when I was in elementary school, a time that you could use your imagination instead of a cell phone for entertainment, that there were some kids who used to walk around the schoolyard at recess pretending to fight imaginary Kung Fu battles in slow motion against unseen enemies. This was an everyday occurrence, one that all of us other kids got used to and didn't really think much about. 

Hey, as long as they didn't trip over me and my imaginary Apollo space capsule, we had no issues. If a kid pretended to fight imaginary enemies today on the schoolyard he'd either be bullied or sent to psychotherapy. “Get back on your iPod young man and behave yourself!” the shrink would probably say. I can only assume that this group of dedicated hand-to-hand combatants watched these films. For all I know, maybe they were indeed keeping the schoolyard safe from invisible Kung Fu henchmen. Looking back, I admire them for their imagination and “don't give a rat's ass” attitude about what people thought.

"The Black Dragon's Revenge" follows star Ron Van Clief as he searches for Bruce Lee's lost “finger fighting” manual after Lee's sudden death. The action is fast, the dialog is cheesy, and much of the acting is bad. Everything you could hope for in a low-budget 70s action film.

I enjoyed the movie. The vibe is nostalgic, and I feel that maybe I missed out by not watching Kung Fu movies in the 70s when they were all the rage. The audio is a bit mismatched but hey, isn't that a thing with these flicks?

On the original movie, every mention of “Bruce Lee” was literally scratched off the soundtrack portion of the film due to fear of being sued by Lee's estate. In this Blu-Ray version, the Film Detective did the best they could at those points by replacing the instances of scratched dialog with newly recorded voice but it didn't really work so they just edited out the hiss or scratch. Usually, only “Bruce” is left at these edits as opposed to “Bruce Lee”. In a few spots, it looks like they opted for a bad edit in the video which, in my opinion, fit nicely in with the film anyhow. Check out the included short to learn more.

Basically, if you are a fan of old Kung Fu movies this one will be a little gem to add to your collection. If you are not a fan, then this definitely isn't for you. Personally, I didn't love it but I enjoyed it.
