Forsyth’s father told him not to approach strangers. That never stopped him, of course – he would talk to anybody without hesitation, and usually until he was told to stop. So his curiosity peaked when a pegasus knight landed in a nearby field, just minutes from where he’d been constructing his stick fort. He’d been fascinated by the horses in his father’s books, but a horse with wings seemed closer to a myth. This had to be investigated.
(He thought he’d seen a pegasus once before, but it was just a rather large falcon. Python had fun teasing him about that).
He’d hidden behind a tree for a while – the pegasus was so big, and with those giant wings, seemed larger still. But the rider – a friendly-looking lady dressed in pink – had spotted him, and beckoned him closer. Forsyth nervously complied, all but bouncing as he walked toward her.
He’d heard that winged horses didn’t like boys; that they could only be trained and ridden by women. But the creature seemed calm, and did not balk at his presence. Tentatively, he ran a hand down the pegasus’ head, feeling her soft, white coat under his fingers.
“She’s so gentle,” he said, enraptured. “Can I… can I feed her?”
The lady nodded with a smile, and to his delight, handed him an apple. As the pegasus took the fruit from his cupped hands, he giggled at the sensation.
“Oh!” he laughed. “That tickles!”
Sumia hadn’t noticed anyone at first when she landed. She had been sure to check that the place below was safe enough for her and Lovebirds to land, but she must have glanced over the young boy who was playing down there when she scanned the area. Definitely not something to mention to anyone. She was supposed to be more observant than that.
She petted Lovebirds once she dismounted, smiling up at her mount and partner. Glancing around she decided this would be the perfect place to rest for a while. Lovebirds didn’t seem to mind it either. This time as she looked around, she stopped the boy. He seemed to be peeking out at them from behind a tree and Sumia smiled. She motioned to him, delighted to see that they were not alone.
He seemed entranced by Lovebirds which brought a brighter smile to Sumia’s face. She had worried that if she wasn’t around Lovebirds might be a bit more nervous about being touched by a stranger, but she stayed nearby, watching him as he petted her. She wondered if he had ever seen a pegaus before. She was thinking that it was a no with the way he reacted or that he simply kept away from them before now.
She handed over the apple gladly and giggled when he said that it tickled. It did indeed tickle.
“Yes. It does. She does it to me all the time too. My name is Sumia and her’s is Lovebirds. May I ask your name?”
