Something like: “I’m doing the best I can.” OR “I always make mistakes.” “I know I’m capable and I can navigate this challenge.” OR “I should be doing much better than I am.” This is the difference between positive vs negative self-talk. If you notice you’re regularly talking yourself in a negative way, here are 3️⃣ 🔑 steps you can take to shift your thinking: 1️⃣ Listen to your self-talk. Be aware of your inner dialogue — is it generally positive or negative? It is a good idea to note down some of the things it’s saying each day. 2️⃣ Challenging your self-talk. If you notice your self-talk is generally negative, here are some questions you can ask yourself to counteract those thoughts: • What is the evidence for and against my thinking? • How can I find out if what I’m thinking is actually TRUE? • Are there any other ways I can look at this situation? • From a positive stance, how would I view this situation? 3️⃣ Shifting your self-talk. To change the way you talk to yourself, it can be helpful to start by making a list of your strengths. You can also make a list of challenges in your life that you overcame and a list of people in your life that you know value your worth. You can draw on these lists when you notice your self-talk is starting to become negative. 🔑: It is important to understand that it takes time + consistency to shift your thinking. Don’t beat yourself up over it when it doesn’t shift overnight. The other day I met Ben. At age 9 he was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa leaving him legally blind. He has worked for Special Olympics for the past 26 years doing a whole lot of good. He gave me (and his friend Todd who introduced the two of us) a tour of his office desk in D.C. which included a Braille typewriter. Then Ben sat down and wrote “More Good” for me. It reminded me of a Le Petit Prince quote I used to have written across my room in high school: “It is very simple: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” 46 states, 143 homes, and 39,300 miles.
