Adding manual shifting to racing games I think might be a "can't go back" point for me? It makes the game so much more interesting and massively increases the complexity of the decisions you're making. You're no longer just accelerating, brake into the corner, apex, accelerate out, you have to keep in mind where in the power band you want to sit on the way out, get your gear in, and take advantage of your low end in a very engaging way. Plus if you get into ratio tuning you can really make it work the way you want.

Like I drive manual in real life but in real life the consequence for shifting short is "the engine is lugging and you probably save some fuel" so it's different. I almost only short shift when I'm driving off the freeway, really.

I also like how Forza has actually meaningful modification, not just nebulous Number Goes Up upgrades. I'm not sure how common that is because the last driving game I played was Burnout Paradise, a game so old the XBox version contained ads for the Obama campaign, but it's cool that if you put a turbo V12 in a car with biscuit tires, you'll just spin on the line and waste a bunch of power. Combine that with race modes where you have to keep your car's overall performance rating below a certain amount and you have to get very crafty with how you distribute your upgrades.
