Having a #Warhol moment, perhaps. This is a project I've been working on for a while and I'm so excited it is finally happening! Between starting my own business, grad school preparation, apartment hunting, and making new friends (I moved to Oakland less than 2 years ago), I've had little time for my own projects, but, with the help of one of my oldest friends, was able to put this together in between it all.
I am excited to introduce you to . . . foundscapes. . .
Remix culture isn't new, but it has been propelled to new heights in a time where access to information has exponentially increased and cultural ephemera is more accessible than ever. A major moment in history that spawned a new generation of remixers began in the early 1970's with the creation of the audio cassette. We are interested in examining this point in time through the late 1990's and learning more about the phenomenon, the people behind them, and celebrate the wonderful music and aural experiences contained therein.
The ability for just about anyone to record on these tapes made sharing a personal palette of audio with friends, party-goers, radio stations, and many other audiences commonplace. Although there had been many other remix efforts in various mediums before, this was the first time in history that DJ culture was popularized and accessible to the non-elite.
Those tapes. You know the ones. They may be in boxes in your closet and maybe you haven't listened to them in years, but, for some reason, you still have them.
Well, that reason is about to become clear. . .
We're starting a mixtape archive and WE WANT YOUR OLD TAPES. Tapes people made for you. Tapes you made for people. Tapes you made for yourselves. Tapes you found. We want them all!
Fan us on Facebook or Follow us on Twitter to keep up to date with us, share with friends, and find out where we'll be digitizing this summer in Oakland and Portland.
Our goal is to create mp3's of your tapes and get the stories behind them. Don't worry, we won't harm them…we'll just digitize and return them to you. Want to contribute? Learn more here. Thank you! PS. At this budding stage of the project, we'd also really appreciate if you could connect us with other potential contributors or supporters (radio folks who would put out the call for mixtapes, DJs with huge tape collections, those with similar projects, etc.).
