Hello!! I'm writing a fanfic at the moment that alternates in chapters between Tuvok & Neelix friendship, and Janeway/Chakotay romance. The problem is - I think Tuvok-lovers are used to fics that tag him not actually having him as a major focus, and JC-lovers aren't used to their fics necessarily sharing so much of the focus with other characters. Do you think it's possible to make a fic that appeals to both groups?
I think (perhaps naively) that if you just focus on writing a fic that you enjoy, others will naturally enjoy it as well - and then even if they don't, at least you had fun writing it rather than having it be a source of stress~! It's much easier not to be discouraged when you write things for You and You like it rather than writing it for Them (the adoring public) because if They don't like it what do you have?? But if you start with You liking it, it's a win-win! Either You like it alone or both You and They like it! Does that make sense?? Though on further reflection I don't write many fics that have elements of mass appeal (spirk, j/c) so maybe I'm not the one to ask...haven't really had to worry 'will this fic about Tuvok putting his son to bed frustrate people?' hehehe~!! My best more concrete advice is just deleting comments if they're mean or annoying for no reason! Also, as a Tuvok lover, I personally usually skim through most fics that include him in the bio to see how involved he actually is in the story so if the rest of my ilk are anything like me we'll probably be there eventually hehehe...do NOT worry about that. ayy if ya writing it for yourself and getting something from writing it, it's not pretentious, it's meaningful just by the act of meaning something to you. some of us would love to see it, but if you want to keep it private, that's cool too :)
