americans are sooo desensitized to guns and sometimes it manifests in ways that affect your media literacy. like remember in the first episode of sherlock when john watson opens up his drawer and you see a gun in there and youre supposed to understand that this is narratively significant and conveys his suicidality as well as his willingness to skirt rules and laws but the first time i watched it i was like oh well theres his desk gun. lots of people have those

#at my old job i worked with a half american half uk writing team and we were developing a story #it was a cosy mystery with a female protagonist and we needed a solution to the first arcs Big Bad #and one of the americans suggested that she has a gun and shoots the big bad #and i remember this discussion so clearly #a gun changes everything. it is not cosy and using it so violently will forever change the script #and this writer had not realised how absurd the gun sounded #it just seemed like a quick easy solution instead of a plot device that would forever change the genre and tone #no shade to the writer btw we didnt end up having the gun #but it did showcase how normal guns can be for some and how alien for others

While I understand the desire to make Big Art entirely and viscerally I think it's worth considering that small art often leaves an outsized impact on its audience. Short stories, teensy indie games, short films, sketches on scrap paper, carved or sculpted figures that would fit in the palm of your hand, etc. etc. are all things that, when they hit your psyche at just the right angle, can stay lodged in there forever specifically because they are small. It is not necessary for a thing to be sprawling for it to have impact.
