The thing about Ariane and Thancred is... there is just absolutely no romantic chemistry there. There's no real personality clash between them? They work perfectly well together. Ariane might be a little put off by his ladies' man persona in ARR, but then again, she isn't put off by Haurchefant, so. She's pretty pissed at Thancred for a minute in Shadowbringers but that's temporary. They're perfectly good friends by Endwalker. I think they simply are not each other's type and would not feel any sort of romantic attraction to one another. I've even asked myself, just to ask the question, whether Ariane/Urianger/Thancred could be a thing in any universe and the only way I can see it happening is as a V, with Urianger dating both of them and Ariane and Thancred being entirely friendly, chill, entirely unromantic housemates. 😂

Ariane/Ardbert feels almost like selfcest. Which is not a strike against, in and of itself! This is specifically about the two of them, for the record--I would not assert that all shards are basically the same person, and I don't think that's true even of all of Ariane's hypothetical Azem shards floating around out there. WoL/Ardbert isn't inherently selfcest. It is specifically my feeling that Ariane and Ardbert are very similar in both background (rural farm kids) and temperament (painfully earnest, somewhat naive especially early in their journeys as adventurers). They're similar enough to understand one another kind of intuitively as soon as Ardbert lets his villain mask slip even a little bit in post-HW, even though sadly they don't have the chance to actually befriend each other there. I think the melding of their souls feels especially seamless because of that. I would say there isn't really a romantic energy there simply because they are a bit too similar to be attracted to one another.

There is, however, absolutely some romantic/sexual tension between Ardbert and Urianger that never has a chance to be realized while they're in the Source (and I don't think Urianger would be ready for that anyway, with how soon it is after Moenbryda's death). And though Ardbert never gets to act on those feelings for himself, they are realized in a way when his soul joins with Ariane's, and she is aware of his love for Urianger alongside her own. So... Ariane/Ardbert/Urianger is kind of a thing, in its own weird way!

Thancred I think, if he and Kitali had not looked at me through the fourth wall and said "nah we're just friends", would've been a very casual relationship in its entirety. I think they're both too used to keeping walls up to really let themselves get comfortable around the other and Thancred would enable Kitali to keep doing that rather than breaking those bad habits down like Aymeric does. And it would've made Shadowbringers Even Worse, between the 5 year separation and her tearing into him about how he treats Ryne. If they were in a relationship at that point they would no longer be in one, I think, until Thancred gets his shit together.

And Hilda, as much as I love her, would not survive the Warrior of Light separation. It would've been a fun thing til Kitali left Ishgard and maybe continue to be a fun thing if/when she comes back but never anything serious. As it is, Hilda is sort of the in-between rebound for Kitali while she figures out her feelings for Aymeric that she's desperately trying to ignore lmao. Sorry, Hilda. But it's the same kind of friends with benefits relationship she has with Haurchefant! It's just a couple of people having fun and it's also a breather for both of them to be with someone who treats them as a person. Kitali doesn't treat them as lesser for being bastard children and especially Hilda for being biracial. There's no hard feelings when they stop and go back to just being friends.
