My belated mother lived through-out Central Asia. When she was young they called her foreign girl in the streets of Kabul because of her naturally blonde hair. She was completely Afghan ethnically though. Because of her beauty I remember them referring to her as the gold Afghan lady. We went into the little stores. I remember them whispering discretely, “The golden Afghan beauty is here.” I remember being four years looking up at her and being enamored. She always shined.
