RENT Live On Fox hits and misses during its live yet pre-recorded event
By: Miguel Moringlane Jr.
Fox network surprised everyone as they announced that their winter production of live theatre brought to the comfort of your homes is the critically acclaimed and fan favorite of bohemian life during the aids crisis “RENT”. Rent has been a production where it’s true meaning is measure what type of person you are by how much love you let yourself receive and how much you’ve given back. It also teaches us to embrace ourselves and take every day by the horns. Popular songs include the opening number “RENT”, “I’ll Cover You”, “Out Tonight”, “Today 4 U”, and the ever popular song that’s become a theme for it ever since its debut “Seasons of Love”’.
I will begin by saying I’m not a professional writer/actor/or musical lyricist. I’m a lover of art and my opinion is just that: opinion. If you would like to discuss anything I’ve said or may have presented with sufficient knowledge then please do. Just be respectful and I’ll answer any question related or unrelated.
Jonathan Larson’s RENT is truly amongst the greats of stage plays and musical. 5 friends endure a cold winter within New York as they’re struggling with drug addiction, monogamy, sticking it to the MAN, and to shed light on a very serious topic. Aids were and still are an evil immune deficiency virus that can kill you. Everyone is susceptible regardless of sexuality, race or gender. While Fox 11 (Los Angeles) debuted its new production of the show despite One of their lead cast members, Brennin Hunt (Roger), suffering from a broken ankle the night before the broadcast. To counter this and still have a show the network decided to use the dress rehearsal recording in place of the actual live performance.
Unfortunately, it had seemed as if many of the cast members were uncomfortable as soon as they hit the stage. Their confidence clearly increased as the performance went on but it only makes us, the audience, wonder if they had been able to perform live would they have performed better or worse? Another thing that plagued the dress rehearsal recording was that most of the cast seemed to be hoarse or saving their voice for the actual performance. This hindered a lot of the iconic songs RENT fans have come to love passionately. However, I do think mic testing and an over excited audience whose applause was practically non-stop contributed to this.
Jordan Fisher (Mark) and Vanessa Hudgens (Maureen) really stole the show with spot on performances steadily throughout the duration of the two and a half hour musical. Tinashe (Mimi) really started to shine as the show progressed and her nerves died down leaving her to belt out better notes and emotion. Valentina (Angel) was poorly casted in my opinion and was only approached due to her popularity on the hit reality competition show RuPaul’s Drag Race. Her along with her lover co-Star Brandon Victor Dixon (Tom Collins) just didn’t seem to nail the romance aspects which, In turn, also made their performance a bit unnatural and awkward. Mario (Benjamin Coffin III) was a hit and miss throughout but probably had one of the most steady performance than anyone. Lastly, Kiersey Clemons (Joanne) just acted as if she was really trying hard to not show that she was indeed acting. However, after Vanessa Hudgens’ “Over the Moon” performance, which gained applause from fans and critics alike, Kiersey started to become the Joanne I knew she could be. Actually, it’s as if everyone stepped up their performances during the famous “La Vie Boheme” number which follows immediately after Hudgens’ solo.
The interesting thing above all was that Fox had to take a different route their “live” show due to Brennin Hunts ankle injury. His character moved around the least and constantly sat atop a table for about ninety percent of his performance. The fact that this made Fox seem as if they had to abandon all of the live performing altogether is questionable to say the least. It’s a real shame as you could easily see all the hard work the cast and crew put into this production and the finished project was never seen.
Now, it may seem as I have only negative comments about Fox’s RENT but in all reality I enjoyed myself regardless. It was the theatre kid in me who was nitpicking at certain aspects. The added lines most of the time made no sense but it absolutely didn’t deter from Jonathan Larson’s very important message and for that I give the highest of applauds. The recorded album really showcases what RENT LIVE could’ve been and should’ve been. If watching the dress rehearsal doesn’t pique your interest I would urge you to give the album a listen. Especially since Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman) has quite a bit of singing which the album highlights very well. Now, if you really would like to see a broadway quality production of this music then please seek out the film “Rent: Filmed Live On Broadway (2008)”. This version completely captures the emotional, musical, and visual aspects of RENT that only those who’ve seen the musical live at the theatre have seen. Most of all, let us never forget one of the biggest messages Larson would’ve wanted us to take with us... No Day But Today.

I’m here on almost half past 3 waiting for The Four’s another episode to kick in for no reason at all
Yeah it’s on FOX but if I found a knock-off Cartoon Network stream that’s surprisingly on par with the schedule then so can I find one for FOX
