Fox guy angsty backstory time

Once every fae comes of age, (like, ten or so) they're added to the fae that can be assigned to humans, to try and convince them to never leave the fae realm.

So once Fox guy came of age, he was assigned his first human! And he's really determined to do a good job! And the girl he's assigned to looks the same age as him, this should be easy enough.

She doesn't really have a happy life in the waking world, her parents are divorced, she's neglected at home and bullied at school. Nobody likes her, and nobody talks to her, unless to hit her or tease her.

So when she suddenly finds herself in the dream realm, fully aware she's dreaming, it feels like a safe haven, it's not a nightmare! Nothings happening but that's better than running. But then a kid her age shows up, he's a little funky but he's talking to her and being funny, so she asks him if he wants to be her friend. He doesn't know what that is, so she shows him, and they do become friends. And the fae realm becomes her secret hideaway, no matter how hard her day was, she always has a safe place and a friend waiting for her.

But one day, she breaks, it's just too hard to wake up everyday to face her reality. It would just be so much easier to stay asleep, and never wake up.

And this is what Fox guy has been waiting for! But somehow...it doesn't feel rewarding. She's told him all that she has to go through, and it really is awful, but to let her stay here, to never wake up and see the sun, and the birds, he doesn't want that for her.

So he decides to go behind the Fae king's back, and release her from the fae realm. And together they sneak inside his palace.

But the Fae king catches them, he could tell Fox guy was soft, and had been watching them. And now he was in trouble.

Fox guy tries to protect her, but there's nothing he can do against the Fae king, and he's over powered in seconds. But instead of turning the girl into a fae, he steals her soul, and absorbs it, leaving her a hallow shell.

The Fae king gives Fox guy another chance, because he sees a lot of potential in him, but Fox guy is furious and heartbroken.

He attacks the Fae king again, but he still can't do anything against him, and is overpowered again. But the Fae king still doesn't want to waste his potential, so instead of destroying him, he curses him. Limiting his magic and sealing off his human form. And he can only get them back after he's trapped a hundred humans in the fae realm. But while he's too stubborn to submit, he'll be held prisoner in a cell.

For a long time Fox guy refuses to submit, but eventually, he gives in, and is released.

By the time the main character gets there, she's his last human.
