I feel like it’s necessary to bring back this image of Baji’s room for many reasons.
First, to emphasize just how much he Really Loves animals. Indulging in Living Things Picture Books, manga (with many animals) 😭 this man’s is so SOFT and we don’t talk about it enough.
Also peep how he has a hobby for muscle training, and keeps casual weights by his bedside.
I bring it up because I feel like I need to see more cute headcanons of Baji using his s/o for his exercises (I.e. doing squats with them on his back, using them as a lift weight, etc)
Idk as someone who doesn’t like working out/prefers yoga/stretching exercises, this would be a cute way to spend time.

“Bring her by next meeting,”
Mikey ordered.
Baji sweat under the intense seriousness Mikey was radiating.
“It’s really not what you think, M-“ Baji tried to disagree, but Mikey simply wasn’t taking no for an answer.
This was an order, not a request.
“I just wanna meet her!” Mikey pouted. “Anyone who can get You to stop on a rampage is worth meeting.” Draken agreed, smirking at Baji. “It’s not everyday we get to see Baji Keisuke shy,” Mitsuya shoved Baji playfully. “She’s got to be a saint of some kind to put up with your stubborn ass!”
Baji groaned, glaring at each and every one of the Toman founders, who were simultaneously grinning wickedly back at him.
“I said, no.”
He was determined.
Everyone went quiet, and soon all eyes landed to the ominous aura in the air: all eyes on Mikey.
Baji wasn’t budging.
“Fine,”
Mikey shrugged, outwardly appearing indifferent. “Not like I can force you.”
And that was it.
The meeting ended.
That was way too easy.
Baji didn’t have a good feeling, when the room started to file empty.
“Good luck,” Draken, the last person in the room, had sighed, before leaving Baji in a cold sweat.

“Hmm~mh-mm~”
Whisper
“Who is that guy?”
“I’m not sure, be looks like he’s waiting on someone…”
“He kinda looks.. like a delinquent, doesn’t he?”
“Well he’s driving a bike, so…”
“Maybe he’s waiting on a girlfriend?~”
“Don’t joke like that! Who would even…”
Whisper
“Yyy/nn-chinnn~ y/n-chin~” Mikey whistled to himself, scanning the ocean of student heads while he wait leisurely on his CB250.
Baji was PISSED.
“What is that guys deal?!”
“Who?” You asked, behind him like a little duckling.
“No one!” Baji bit back full force, practically red, trying to hide Mikey from your window viewing pleasure.
Barely taken aback, if at all, you hummed casually before shrugging. “Guess I’ll go find out ~” you gathered the last of your materials before pulling your bag neatly over your shoulder and starting your way towards the door.
“Wait!” Baji tried stopping you, but just as he reached for your hand to try and halt you, you did a quick sprint to the door, avoiding his touch. You grinned wickedly, yet so sweetly, actually, wait, what was with that giggle? He was so caught up in how cute you looked giggling at his bewildered expression, that he lost sight of you completely.
“Shit, wait, y/n!! “ he yelled, trying to make quick work to catch up to you. His glasses slid, the frames blocking his vision only for a moment, enough to make him bump against the door way in his quick pursuit.
“Damnit, Chifuyu!” Baji yelled, and up popped Chifuyu’s blond helmet. “Yes sir!”
“Don’t let Mikey get ahold of Y/n!” He ordered, and just like a good subordinate, Chifuyu clicked his heels. “GOT IT!”
As Baji and Chifuyu both went different directions, Ryusei couldn’t contain his laughter. “What the hell is going on?”
Just outside the school entrance, you snuck to-and-fro between mingling students to make sure you went unseen.
You were just curious after all. Baji never wanted to introduce you to any of his friends, and while it wasn’t like you two were dating, but you were curious about Baji’s personal life.
About his super cool biker gang friends!
You peeked a spying eye out past the gate, scanning the area to spot the culprit of Baji’s stress. It didn’t take long, given the low rumbling of an engine.
Biking boots.
Loose black trousers.
A white belt.
An oversized white v neck, shoulders covered with another school’s jacket. Not the same Tokyo Manji uniform you’d seen just the other day.
And as your gaze wandered to meet the face of this lazily dressed delinquent, you made direct eye contact with Manjiro Sano.
Your heart stopped. What kind of presence was this, that you were feeling? It felt like the wind had been knocked right out of you. Your lungs deflated and suddenly you were lightheaded. Were you holding your breath? Why couldn’t you breathe? Why was he looking at you so intently? Like you were—
“Y/n!” Whispered Chifuyu, bringing you back to reality.
But just before he got his hands on you, so had Mikey.
“Y/n-chin!~ there you are, I was looking for you!” Mikey laughed happily, his bike’s kickstand having been shoved in the ground with haste.
“Too late, shit-“ Baji hissed, just making it in time to witness Mikey holding your hands in his with glee. “C’mon, before your boyfriend snatches you away,” Mikey grinned at you, then glancing at Baji, who seemed to hear every word.
“You low hanging bastard! Don’t you dare—“ Baji started, but it was too late before Mikey was pulling you past your restrains- over and onto his bike, sitting in front of him.
“WHAT THE HELL!” School be damned, Baji couldn’t hide the hot rage that came from Mikey’s overstepping. But even when he tried reaching the two of you, Mikey was already throttling the gas.
The last thing Baji saw of you was your mildly worried expression.
“Seee ya~” Mikey laughed, so so very clearly amused, before riding away full speed.
“Mikkkeeeeyyyyy…” Baji was boiling over, further and further as the day went on.
Couldn’t he just respect one thing? One? Baji said no, No, damnit!
“Baji, we should follow them,” Chifuyu spoke, as though there wasn’t all hope lost. “C’mon.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
“‘The hells your problem, knock it off!” Baji yelled.
Everyone was just surrounding you— trying to get a look at Baji’s Girlfriend. Or, that was the rumor.
“Baji-San has a girlfriend?!”
“No way! She’s just his tutor!”
“But he brought her here! That’s strange!”
“It’s unlike Baji to bring someone…”
“Shh he’ll hear you!”
“I didn’t say anything wron—“
“QUIT WHISPERING I CAN HEAR YOU BASTARDS!”
Baji groaned. This was the worst.
Chifuyu had good intentions, bringing you around to get a better understanding of who Baji really was, the side of him you didn’t know anything about.
And now here you were in the heart of it, and you looked amazed.
“Is that a real tattoo?” You asked one of the guys, peeking when the thug drew back his sleeve to show it off. “No, fuck off.” Baji pushed past, taking you away from the crowd.
“H-hey! Baji,” you tried to argue, but he wasn’t having any of it. “Don’t care, we’re leaving.”
*reader begins using Baji instead of Kei/Keisuke while in front of his friends, to avoid being seen as disrespectful*
“Woah woah! Where’s the fire!” Smiled a nice looking boy with short hair and a cross earring. “You must be the famous Baji charmer,” he opened his hand to you, to which you shook politely. “Name’s Mitsuya, Mitsuya Takashi.”
“Nice to make your acquaintance Mitsuya-san, I don’t much about charming, but I do my best to keep Baji on top of classes.” You giggled.
Mitsuya paused, starring at you for a while, charmed. Quickly, he looked back up to smirk at Baji. “Lucky bastard.” He almost soluted before giving your hand a final squeeze, and backed off.
But you were a popular guest star, it was only a matter of time before you were swept away again. Much to Baji’s dismay. In the crowd of delinquents, it was getting hard to keep track of where you were being taken.
“Chifuyu, I’m about to lose it.” Baji informed, ready to throttle the next guy who put his hands on you. Chifuyu gulped. “J-just, hang tight boss!” He groaned, dreading the turn of events.
“I-is THAT a real tattoo?” You gasped, the next time you were spotted was with Draken, who was crouching for your convenience and chuckling at your bright eyed excitement. “I-is it a dragon? How cool!” You threatened to trace the ink outline.
“Ken Ryuguji, nice to meet you,” Draken had introduced himself, now standing up to full height.
“Wow, even your name means dragon? That’s kind of bad ass, right?”
Draken laughed, like you’d just said a hilarious joke. “It is bad ass isn’t it!” He laughed even harder. “She’s great, you should’ve brought her around sooner, Baji!”
And while Baji was off fuming, you stood there happily content.
“Hey, yaknow, I’m like, way stronger than Baji, right?” Mikey grinned, leaning in for a fake flirty gesture. Stalking you like a shadow, Mikey’s been having you make your rounds, all within his own supervision.
Mikey did find you rather adorable, after all.
Mikey liked the way you handled yourself, composed and confident in a crowd of scary looking thugs. He liked the way you respected them and treated them in a friendly manner. But Mikey really liked the way you smiled, the lovesick doe eyed puppy that adored Baji. He knew you and Baji were in the process of becoming an item.
But you weren’t yet, so he thought it no harm to pseudo flirt before Baji could have a valid reason to tell him off.
“I saw the way you kick! I was really impressed,” you praised him with an admiration. “Considering Baji is the strongest person I know, I suppose I’ll have to take your word for it.”
This seemed to light a fire in Mikey. “Oh no, take more than just my word. Baji! C’mere so I can kick your ass!” He joked loudly.
Baji was almost thrilled when he finally found you again. And what made it all the better was the way you jogged over to be by his side.
Your presence alone was enough to allow him catch his breath.
When he looked down at you to assess your comfort levels, what with being pawned around like a shiny new toy, he was released to see your carefree smile.
“I’m also way stronger than Baji, by the way.” Out spoke Pah, almost startling you.
“Oh really? Maybe we should test which one of us is the strongest!”
“Stupid~, I’m just gonna win! Don’t even bother,”
“Now that’s a challenge I think I’ll take you up on.”
“What the fuck is wrong with you guys!”
…
And that’s how you ended up refereeing Toman’s first official strength and endurance competition.
Between Mitsuya and Draken, you made sure both of them seemed prepared enough for your the starting signal.
“… Go!”
And in traditional arm wrestling fashion, the twin dragons fought with all their strength, gripping for dear life to not be the loser.
They had a good few seconds of beefing back and forth, but soon became obvious it was Draken’s game.
“No fair! No one can beat Kenchin at arm wrestling! This is rigged!” Mikey yelled from the sidelines, not eager to be the one to follow up.
Next in the lineup, they wanted to try push ups. All ready in position, in a line so everyone was visible.
It didn’t take them long to tire themselves out— only a few seemed like they never would stop.
“Just give it up Mikey, I ain’t losin’ to you!” Baji huffed out, still fighting Mikey’s childish need to win. “You’re just sayin’ that cause you’re getting tired~ I could keep this up for hours!” Manjiro quipped back with barely a huff of exertion at all.
All that remained was Mikey, Baji, Draken and Chifuyu. Though, just as they rounded off to the fifteen minute mark, Chifuyu practically lost consciousness. And Draken honestly started getting bored.
“This is fun ‘n all, but don’t you guys have better things to do?” Out emerged another girl, with long blond hair. A wide smile bloomed over your features when you saw her.
“W-wow, you’re like, really pretty… Oh! Um, s-sorry, hi, I’m–“ you tried to introduce yourself, but Emma already knew. “Y/n, yeah, heard lots about you just from passing through.” She held out her hand to you, smiling in unison.
You shook her hand happily, “So, is it true?~ Are you and Baji shacking up?~” she whispered with a grin. Your face heated up dramatically at her question and shook your head. “No! No, n-not like that! We just go to school together!” You defended.
“Hmm~ if you say so.” She let off. “I’m Emma, by the way. Mikey’s my brother, if you couldn’t tell.”
You blinked a few times, turning the idea in your head. “Oh, that makes sense! You guys do look alike!” You nodded, and looked over at Baji and Mikey still squabbling on how to settle the score.
“Oi! Come on! We ain’t got all night!” Draken called to them, now that he finally had his fill of the excitement. “Just settle it with a good ol’ fashion fist fight and be done with it!”
Both Mikey and Baji huffed out some kind of reply, to their feet. “I’m so going to kick your ass.” Baji glared at Mikey. “Oho~ I’d like to see you try.” Mikey grinned back.
“Are they always this competitive?” You leaned closer to Emma in inquiry. “Yes, literally all the time.” She replied quickly, a unanimous nod waving over all else who heard the question.
That made you smile.
Overlooking the petty little dispute, you couldn’t help but feel warm inside. Before, you’d only ever seen Baji with a mild temper, holding his tongue and being the voice of reason in some cases. His thick rimmed glasses hid half his face, and you’d have never guessed his hair was actually as long as it was with the way he tied it back.
You began to fall for him ever since you saw the way he took such good care of the injured kitten, barely a month ago. You began noticing the cracks in the character he played up, and found it cute. The way he would stifle curse words, diverting his ever growing tempter.
Until eventually he began also showing interest in you as well. Meeting you anytime you asked for his presence, gradually asking you more about yourself, and reassuring you about things you couldn’t control.
This, too, was Baji Keisuke. Hot tempered, brash, snarky, confident, handsome… you knew you liked Baji before you knew how he really got along. He was a gentle person underneath it all. He loved animals, just as they loved him back.
Would you have feared him, if you saw this side of him before meeting him in school? Surely not, you’d been surrounded by delinquents for the last hour, and felt no discomfort whatsoever. That had to mean something, right?
“You got this, Baji-san!!” Chifuyu yelled out, snapping you out of you day dream. Everyone was cheering all around you as the fight was in full swing. Push after hard punch, they were fighting for blood. It took you off guard at first, the blood, but this was normal for them.
A swift kick to the side of the head, a block to counter, Baji looped his arm around Mikey’s foot to falter his landing. Before he could meet the ground, Mikey used his palms to push off, and send his uninterrupted foot under Baji’s chin to clock him in an undercut fashion. That definitely had to hurt.
Yet they fought on. In amazement, you starred. With everyone else cheering, the hype of battle began building inside you, until you felt ready to burst. “I believe in you, Kei!” You yelled out. In front row, he definitely heard you. It felt embarrassing having a girl root for you so explicitly, but damn did it work to fuel the fight in him.
Baji grinned wide, regaining his composure. His next punch really hurt, you could tell. Mikey’s expression was a dead give away of that. “Damn, you really pack a punch whenever your girl’s involved,” he teased. “Maybe we should bring her around more often.”
“Try it,” Baji bit back, taking the initiative. The two have sparred so much in their life, they could read each other’s moves easily. And Baji knew Mikey was losing on purpose.
Sure, losing to Baji left a bad taste in his mouth, losing in front of you tasted even more bitter. But at the end of the day, Mikey knew Baji really cared about you. He would have chances in the future to sweep you off your feet and let you reconsider who you liked best. But for now, he wouldn’t dare ruin the glow of excitement that lit up that cute face of yours.
“Winner! Baaajiii!” Draken’s voice rang with a roaring hoot. All of Toman hooted back in response, all in good fun. Mikey could afford losing petty fights in front of his subordinates every now and again. He was still The Invincible Mikey, and he’d be sure to whip anyone who actually questioned that standing.
You jumped in excitement at the declaration, clapping for your classmate. “Way to go Kei!!” You called out happily.
Baji knew he won by default, but he didn’t really care to rebuttal the outcome. Not when you looked so happy. He grinned at you and rolled his eyes. “Had it in the bag,”
“Mmhm~ good fight.” Mikey chuckled past the two of you. “Meeting adjourned!”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
“See you ‘round!” Called out another Toman member, zooming past on their bike. You waved back politely, standing back while Baji worked on getting his bike ready to go. “Y/n~!” Emma caught your attention, hugging you warmly. “Nice to meet you, make it home safe, kay?” She smiled.
You smiled back. “I’ll be sure to do that! Make it home safe!” You waved her off when she hopped onto the back of Mikey’s bike. “Don’t be a stranger~” Mikey called back with a wide grin and a wave.
Baji rolled his eyes, and roared his engine. “Come on, I’ll give you a ride back home.”
You paused, worried. “Don’t you usually drive home with Matsuno?” You asked. Chifuyu grinned and patted your back. “Sounds weird having you call me that, just call me Chifuyu, alright?”
“And second, don’t sweat it! I can walk home just fine.”
You gave a weary look. “Well, if you’re sure..” you said uneasily. “Hop on,” Baji encouraged, leaning the bike to one side so you could get on easier.
A few attempts later, you only managed to get yourself situated onto the back of the bike by using Baji’s shoulder for leverage.
Holy shit, Baji only just realized. You were so close. Way too close. Chest pressed flush to his back, you shakily gripped the sides of his uniform. He could feel you breath against the back of his neck.
Your legs felt weird being so close to the hot metal of the exhaust pipe, but Baji assured you it was probably safe.
(*please wear a layer of fabric to separate your skin from touching exhaust pipes/bike motors! It can in fact burn you if you are not careful!)
“Don’t worry so much, you’re fine. You rode on Mikey’s bike just a while ago, right?” He tried reassuring you when he started for takeoff.
“Y-yeah but I was sitting in front that time!”
“You want to sit in front now?” He joked.
“Can I?”
“No, that’s dangerous as hell.”
You laughed. “Then why’d you ask?”
“It was radical.” He rolled his eyes. “Rhetorical!” You yelled back.

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
Keisuke and Ryoko Baji were sat on their living room sofa, eyes glued to the TV. This was it, the finale of their favorite detective-murder-mystery show. Already half an hour into the episode, they were at the edge of their seats. All the answers to all the mysteries would soon come to light…
That is, until the shrill call of the home phone broke the tension.
“Kei, you get it.” Ryoko said quickly, eyes not leaving the screen. Keisuke clicked his tongue in annoyance. “Just let it ring, I ain’t missing this!”
His mother threw an empty beer can at him weakly. “It’s bad luck to not answer a phone call!”
Keisuke gave an exaggerated groan, before doing as he was told. “Don’t let me miss anything!” He called before picking the phone from its receiver. If only he could simply pause the show for a moment to pick up where he left off….alas, it is 2004—-
“What?” He asked rudely. Before he could even have the chance to correct himself with a proper greeting, the eerie sound of crying stopped him in his tracks.
“K-kei…” your strained voice rang loud— despite it only being a whisper.
“Y/n? What’s wrong? Where are you?” He rapid fired questions, already itching to throw on his shoes.
“H… he hit me… not l-like usual… I—“ you cried even harder, breaking your poor boyfriend’s heart.
“That fucking bastard… are you still at home?” He asked. Honestly, he was eager to speed over and beat your father to a fucking pulp. He’d only met the guy once, by accident. After he learned of your father’s disgusting habit of hitting you anytime he was frustrated, Baji made it a point to make sure you were home as little as possible. He should have rocked his shit the second he first found out.
“He… kicked me out. I kind of already started walking to your place… if that’s okay,” you said softly, worriedly. “I’m sorry I didn’t ask you beforehand, if it any trouble- I’ll—“ you began to excuse yourself, in case inviting yourself over on such short notice was a nuisance.
“I’m on my way. Keep walking along the same path we always do, I’ll find you. I’ll take mom’s phone with me just in case, call me if anything changes, okay? I’ll be there in just a few minutes.” Keisuke sped his words out, turning to his mom expectingly. “I’m sorry….” You sobbed into the reciever. “Don’t apologize, don’t ever apologize. I’ll be there soon, I promise.” He replied softly. “I’ll see you soon, remember, call me on mom’s phone if you need me before I show up.”
After he’d receiving your confirmed response, he hung up the phone and ran to his room to grab his bike keys. “Who was that? Where are you going? Why do you need my phone?” Ryoko called out, worried.
“Y/n. I’m picking her up. Need your phone just in case, alright?” Keisuke said, rather than asked. Her eyes grew wide with worry, quickly pulling the decise out of her purse to hand it to him.
“What happened?” She asked, but her son was in too much of a hurry, already stepping on the heel of his shoes. “I’ll be back,” he gave no further explanation, before running out of his apartment and down the stairs.
After retrieving his bike, he was off like a bat out of hell on route to you. Keisuke could remember the path you both took to walk back and forth between each other’s homes even if he was blindfolded at this point.
True to his word, it had only taken 7 minutes to reach you; who was walking small on the furthest edge of the street. “Y/n!” He yelled after you, skidding his bike to a halt, too quickly had he hopped off and kicked over his kickstand.
He ran to you, arms open for you as you rammed yourself into his chest, tugging tightly to his tee shirt.
“It’s alright, I’ve got you.” He said calmly, careful to maintain his composure for you. He didn’t want you mistaking his pent up aggression as your fault. He could wait to release it the next time he saw your father.
“Keisuke..” you sobbed into his shirt, shaking like a leaf when his arms wrapped around you tightly. “I know. Don’t cry anymore, everything’s fine now.” He did his best at comforting you, even if he wasn’t confident in his ability to do so.
“Let’s go home, we can stop by the corner store and grab some snacks on our way. ‘You ate dinner yet?”
He pulled away, just enough to look at your poor face. God, you bruised fast. Keisuke hated how much the sight sent him over the edge. He always looked at you to feel steady and at ease with all the was wrong in the world. Yet now, seeing you so upset, hair disheveled, tear stained, and bruised… he wasn’t sure how long his restraint would last.
Still, your angelic smile took him out of his grotesque thoughts of violence. You smiled like you were so relieved to see him. Despite your poor state, you were happy to finally be held by your ever concerned boyfriend. “I’d like that…” you whispered, throwing your arms over his shoulders again before burrowing into the crook of his neck.
Baji took a deep— deep breath, before letting it out, and holding you tighter.
How many times would he break his promise of protecting you? The pain of not being able to do so was slowly eating away at him.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
When you both finally made it home safe, Ryoko was sitting at the table, fiddling with a cup of tea anxiously. Quick to greet you both, the mother all but froze upon seeing your bruised face. Similarly to her son, her stomach sank and turned. Unable to hide her prickling of tears, Ryoko rushed over to you and held you in her arms tightly.
“Oh honey…” she whispered into your hair, holding back from crying as best she could. Things like this didn’t usually upset her, she’d gotten used to her son coming home with much worse a long time ago.
But you were a different story. You didn’t deserve any of the hurt that came your way.
The feeling of being embraced by her motherly scent, you were quick to tip over the edge as well. You were just emotionally vulnerable right now, you couldn’t help when fresh hot tears came spilling over onto her shirt.
“Sit on the couch, I’ll be right back.” She said with a squeeze, a final look over of your face, before dashing off to the bathroom.
Unsure, you looked over at your boyfriend. He gave you a warm smile and smoothed a hand over your back. Walking with you andsitting next to you on the couch, he pulled open the bag from the corner store. “I know you said you were cool with it, but you’re sure Yakisoba’s alright for dinner? I mean, I do it all the time I guess so I ain’t one to talk but—“
“What? Have you not eaten?” Ryoko asked with furrowed brows, hands full with anti-swelling gel and an ice pack. Nervously, you looked down in your lap. Ryoko sighed, sitting on her knees while giving your face another look over. “It’s okay, I’m not mad sweetheart. I’m happy you’re here,” she said kindly, resting her hand on your opposite cheek. “If you ever need anything, we’ll help you. You don’t even need to ask, okay?” She said while looking you in the eyes, apparently emotional as she did so.
You tried to reply to her kind words, but got chocked up before you could. So instead, you nodded softly, hugging her. She hugged you back, looked at her son, glancing at the first aid materials laid out on the table, and back to him, expectedly.
Keisuke nodded to his mother when she gave you another final squeeze before lifting to her feet. “I was just about to whip up some dinner,” she lied with an award winning grin. “Any requests?” She asked, already halfway to the kitchen.
“Her cooking sucks, but it’s tolerable—“ Keisuke began to tease, expecting to have to dodge a thrown ladle in response. But given the situation, Ryoko’s death glare was equally as bone chilling.
You giggled at the exchange, feeling a weight of tension lifting off your shoulders being in the casual and warm home. “No ma’am, no requests.” You replied. “She likes extra konbu in her soup, and extra rice.” Baji called over, grinning ear to ear when you gave him an embarrassed shove.
“Here,”Keisuke held the ice pack up, now that it wasn’t dangerously cold to hold against your face. Still cold to the touch, you flinched unexpectedly. “Hold that on there for a while. ‘Less you want to be spoiled, I can hold it for ya” he chuckled in jest.
“I got it, thanks.” You chuckled back, and held the ice pack to your cheek.
Keisuke was practically a professional when it came to patching up wounds, ever since his mom started making him to do it himself years ago. He’d be sure to help you apply the anti swelling gel after dinner.
To waste the time, Keisuke quickly turned on the re-run for his show’s finale.
You’d seen enough episodes to know a few characters names, and some important plot points, but still fell short of many of the shocking twists the show threw at your flabbergasted boyfriend.
Sitting so closely on the couch was still a little foreign to you, normally used to sitting side by side on the floor pillows. It felt weird when your knees would touch eachother, or when his arm would casually fall behind you in the back of the couch, his warmth radiating against the back of your neck.
You felt yourself wanting to lean closer, to lay your head against his shoulder. Perhaps if you were alone, you would be so bold. But with his mother just a few feet away; you couldn’t bring yourself to do so.
“Damn that was good!” The youngest Baji hollered with glee. “I know right! Even I couldn’t have saw that one coming!” Ryoko hollered back with a laugh. “Alright, dinners ready!”
Quick to help you up from the couch by ever so chivalrously taking your hand in his, you both made way to sit at the table with giddy little smiles.
It wasn’t much, and while Baji’s off-handed comment wasn’t incorrect, you felt as though you’d just finished eating the best dinner you’d had in a very long time.
“Thanks for the meal!” You tried gathering the dishes together to help clean, but Ryoko simply wouldn’t allow it. “I’m glad someone appreciated it,” she chuckled before beginning the washing.
“About tonight, I’d offer you Keisuke’s bed tonight; but that brat can’t keep his room clean to save his life. The sheet probably hasn’t been—“ “I just washed them three weeks ago!” “Oh my god.” She sighed.
“Anyway, if you don’t mind sleeping on the couch, I’ll have Kei bring out a few blankets to lay on. Is that okay?” She asked worried.
“I really shouldn’t impose,” you tried to deflect the act of kindness, but the thought of going home made you physically want to throw up. “But… as long as you’re okay with having me, the couch is plenty. Thank you so much.”
Ryoko smiled happily, and gave her son a quick look, as if to tell him to fetch what she’d asked for. He obediently got up from his spot at the table, and left to bring in the spare blankets. “Do you need a shower?”
“No ma’am.” “You’re sure? You don’t have to be shy, I’ll lock Kei in his room so he won’t peek.”
“I WOULDNT DO THAT!” Keisuke yelled at the top of his lungs with a red face.
You laughed. “No, I’m alright, really.”
“Alright, I’ll be right back with some night clothes.” She patted your head before walking off to her room.
All the attention had began to overwhelm you, as you started fidgeting in the dinning room chair. It was a lot, more than you could get used to in such a short time.
“Sorry, I can tell you’re probably uncomfortable. That’s just the way she is.” Your boyfriend spoke in a quiet tone, as to not alert his mother in the room over. “She just really cares about you. ‘Appreciate you for putting up with her.”
You both sat in silence for a few seconds, until you stood up and helped with tucking in some blankets between the couch cushions. “You have a really good mom, Kei. I understand why you’re so serious about doing well in school now. Let’s work together to make her proud, okay?” You said to him, earning you a shocked look.
The shock wore off, and left behind a childlike smile. “Let’s do our best.” He agreed, patting your head gently, til his hands began running down the sides of your hair, and onto your cheek.
The genuine moment shared between you two made your heard pound. He’s touch was so gentle and considerate. Had you only known Baji as a brawler, the act would have seemed foreign coming from him. But you knew Keisuke as a gentle person, who loves animals enough to care for the local strays, who looked out for his friends, and fought on their behalf.
This was just another side of him you absolutely adored.
The tension created was undeniable, as you both slowly leaned into one another, threatening to share a kiss in his own living room.
“Alright, here you go!” Ryoko called out loud, as if intentionally. Your faces both went red at being caught to blatantly. “T-thank you!” You yelled back, quick to your feet and to grab the garments from her arms. “I’ll get changed.”
Quick to lock yourself into the bathroom, you couldn’t get over how hot your face was burning. The swelling on your cheek stung at the blood flow, eventually bringing you back to reality.
About why you were there in the first place. You looked in the mirror, assessing the damage for yourself. It was definitely dark, but the swelling was not as bad as it could have been.
As you changed out of your day clothes and into the clean night wear, you noticed something funny. The sweatpants fit fine, but the shirt was considerably large. Looking it over, it was a black shirt with a skull print. Definitely Keisuke’s.
Did she accidentally give you the wrong shirt? Still, as you brought the collar up to hide the lower half of your face, you could smell his usual scent over the laundry detergent. It was so comforting.
After folding your clothes as neatly as possible, you left the bathroom and headed back to the living room.
“Alright let’s see… a plastic bag to store your clothes… an extra pillow… that should be everything.” Ryoko yawned. “Alright, time to call it a night. I work in the morning, but I’ll be quiet so I don’t wake you. Sleep well Y/n~”
She escaped to her room, but quickly gave a shout, “You too Keisuke! Go to bed and don’t try pulling any funny business! My door’s open!”
Keisuke clicked his tongue, rolling his eyes at her final comment.
“Here, let me help you with this real quick, then I’ll be out of your hair.” He said while pulling out the gel from earlier. Careful as to not apply any unnecessary pressure, his middle finger gently rubbed circles into your cheek. You sat patiently as he did so, happy to be taken care of as if you were made of glass.
Once he’d finished, he tried retracting his hand, but… couldn’t. Keisuke looked over your face again, disappointed. “I’m sorry this happened…” he whispered, and hung his head. His hand followed suit, gripped in a fist as it rested beside you on the couch. “I keep saying I’ll protect you, yet…”
You smiled, accepting that it was your turn to comfort his insecurities. “You take care of me more than you realize, Kei… I couldn’t be selfish enough to ask for anything more.”
Baji sighed, laying his head in your lap.
“You should be more selfish, yaknow that?”
“I’ve always taken care of myself. I’ll manage.” You said softly.
It didn’t do anything to comfort him though.
Suddenly, an idea popped in his head. He smiled, and looked up at you from his resting position. “How’s learning self-defense sound? I’ll teach ya.”
Your eyes widened. “Learn self defense? Like, how to fight? I don’t think—“ you nervously looked away, but Keisuke took your hand in his, leaning closer. “Not how to fight, dummy. I’d rather kill someone than let you fight. Just some basic self-defense. Well, maybe more intermediate.” He thought about it eagerly. “Please? I swear I won’t be hard on you. I’ll even demonstrate with Chifuyu first so you know what to do.”
Keisuke has always been a pretty passionate guy, but right now, he was absolutely starry eyed.
Always quick to give in, you giggled at his eagerness. “Sure, I think that’s a good idea.”
After agreeing to his idea of teaching you how to defend yourself, and a final call from his mom to leave you alone, he finally departed into his own room.
Even with all the lights off, and no voices echoing through the small apartment… it felt like a home. A genuine home. It was nothing like the cold, large and quiet house you visited after school.
You felt safe, secure under the cozy blankets. The couch was comfortable, and the extra pillows elevated your head to lesson the swelling in the morning.
Therefore, There was no reason for you to be awake still, after two hours of tossing and turning.
It’s not like you were uncomfortable. Why couldn’t you go to sleep? Perhaps it was because your mind was working overtime. When you went home in the morning, dad was sure to be pissed at you for not coming home, even if he was the one to kick you out in the first place.
You were literally damned if you did return, and damned if you didn’t. You were worried about the consequences. Would he hit you the same as he did just a few hours ago? Would he ignore you? Ground you? Forbid you from seeing Baji ever again?
Well, it’s not like he knew Baji was your boyfriend in the first place. He probably already forgot all about his existence.
Still, the possibilities kept multiplying, causing you to stir with upset.
“Hey, you still awake…?” A soft whisper called from the other end of the living room. Turning to face the sound, you found Keiuske standing awkwardly. “Yeah…” you whispered back in a disappointed tone. “Can I sit with you?” He asked right after; already making his way closer to you.
You could never deny him, ever.
“Of course,” you smiled at him through the darkness, finally able to make out his facial features with him closer now, seated on the floor by your head. “Why are you still awake?”
Keisuke rested his arm on the couch, laying his head like a pillow against it as he stared at you. “I dunno.” He lied. It was easy to tell when he lied when he looked at you so sincerely.
“You sure?” You doubled down, propping your head up on your wrist to look down at him. He didn’t look away.
“I just…” Keisuke thought about his next words carefully. “I don’t know why, really… guess I’m just restless.”
You nodded, folding back a piece of hair that fell in his face. “Me too.” you lied. And he could tell. He didn’t call you out on it though. Playing with his hair eventually lead to you running your fingers through it, the same as you would when petting PekeJ. This brought Baji so much comfort, his eyes started slacking.
Not wanting to say anything to ruin the mood, you silently kept petting Baji’s smooth hair through your fingers., occasionally running your nails along his scalp to ease him further. While he began to doze off, you took time to appreciate how pretty your boyfriend was.
His clear complexion, although littered with tiny battle scars. His thick eyebrows, permanently narrowed to give him his signature resting bitch face. The faint scent of strawberry chapstick, the same one you gifted him after teasing him about how chapped his lips were for your first kiss.
Everything about him made you feel so at ease. Completely entranced, you couldn’t think about anything else.
No stupid stuff like your family, at least.
Once you were certain he had fallen asleep, you leaned in close and laid a kiss on his forehead. “I love you,”you whispered away from his ear, not wanting to wake him.
And despite not being conscious, Keisuke smiled.
You pulled one of the multiple blankets off of you, and gently draped it over him.
You laid your head down again, and watched the back of his eyelids dance in slumber, his soft snoring helping ease you to sleep yourself.
a/n: it’s finally here! I really needed to write this, above all else, and it’s finally done! I think I’m happy with this, and I hope you will be as well!:)

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
Baji really dug himself into a hole this time. A deep, deep hole that he wasn’t sure how to claw his way out of quite yet.
He’d honestly expected to have to run to catch up to you and Chifuyu, given how long he’d taken to gather his senses. However, before he even had the chance to make it down the last story of apartment stairs, he came to a skidding halt; all because he could hear the familiar sniffling of suppressed sobs. Your sobs.
He’d recognized them anywhere.
You rarely cried, in front of him, at least. He’d only ever caught you one other time, after an argument you’d had with your family about one of your grades slipping to a B+. It was a brutal argument, one that ruined your confidence for a while.
Yet despite your lack of confidence, Baji was always there to talk you up and tell you how amazing you were. He’d always been by your side, willing to hear out your every insecurity, and offer his shoulder to cry on.
Baji had always been a rock who kept you sturdy and grounded. It didn’t make any sense why he’d act like this now, after all his reassurance.
“I just…. Wish I knew what I did wrong, th-this time…” you strained holding back a hiccup. “H-he’s… never treated me lik-like that before…”
You sniffled, and took a deep breath to calm your trembling.
Baji bit the inside of his cheek so hard, he could taste the iron seeping onto his tongue. How could he let his own insecurities hurt you so deeply? You hadn’t done anything wrong. Yet the way he chose to ignore and dismiss you so blatantly…
“Don’t think of it like that! You didn’t do anything wrong Y/n!” Chifuyu called out, a little louder than the neighbors would have liked.
Baji’s heart squeezed at the sight of someone else offering you the comforting words he so desperately wanted to weave into your ego. Peeking over the staircase just a bit, he saw your back hunched over while sitting on one of the lower steps, and Chifuyu sitting sideways on the step just below you, desperately trying his best to keep his hands to himself.
Chifuyu desperately wanted to reach out his hand, to hold your own, and bleed his true feelings out into words.
But he knew better than anyone that Baji didn’t mean any of what he’d said—or rather, didn’t say—to you earlier.
“Please don’t take Baji’s actions to heart… I think, I said something I shouldn’t have…” he looked down pitifully. “On our way back from the corner store, I tried pushing him to admit something he wasn’t ready to accept yet. I… backed him into a corner, and gave him the wrong idea. Maybe it was on purpose, but…” Chifuyu slowly looked up, feeling his heart break at how sad your tear stained face looked back at him. “I’m sorry… you didn’t deserve to be used for that.”
You blinked back at him curiously, wiping your face frantically. “I… don’t think I understand.” You admitted. Chifuyu wasn’t sure how much he should admit. So, at a loss for words, he averted his gaze.
Catching the feint outline of Baji’s blown out hair and aggressive stance, Chifuyu sighed, almost defeated. ‘He’s finally came to his senses, huh…’
Had he hoped Baji would keep tumbling over his feelings for you in his room longer? So he could have this moment with you? Maybe persuade you that he was the better man? He didn’t really think that, but he’d hoped, maybe, you might…
“That’s okay… I’m sure Baji would be better at explaining it than I would, anyway.” Chifuyu offered you one last sincere smile, laying a hand on your arm for a last ditch effort of comfort, wishing for the last time that you might reach out and take it, ask him not to go… he desperately wanted to hear you say those words. To look at him with the same eyes you’d been starting longingly at Baji with the entire night…
But he’d knew he lost that chance a long time ago, when your eyes widened with anticipation, as you looked back and wishfully caught Baji’s unreadable expression.
“Get home safe, Y/n…” Chifuyu all but whispered, as he retracted his hand and stepped up the staircase slowly in way to his own apartment.
In passing, Baji halted Chifuyu with an earnest, “Thanks…”
Chifuyu paused only for a moment, and gave his best friend an encouraging punch to the shoulder. “Don’t take her for granted like that again, got it? … Treat her nicer from now on, or else.” Chifuyu half threatened, weaved in with a joking tone. Baji didn’t know what ‘else’ could possibly mean, but he wasn’t eager to find out.
After Chifuyu made it up to the second flight, Baji deemed it safe to step his way down to the bottom of the stair case.
He’d walked past you, and sat two steps below, back facing toward you. It was quiet for a minute, the moment swept up in the sound of night crickets and quiet traffic in the distance.
You weren’t sure how to break the silence. It felt pitiful being caught in this situation in the first place. Had you just accepted what happened, and made your way home like you said you would, the hot heat of embarrassment wouldn’t be eating up your neck right now. If only you hadn’t taken his temper so personally, maybe you two could have pretended like it’d never happened. Avoid this awkward tension all together.
“I’m sorry for the way I acted back there, Y/n.” Baji spoke clearly and forward. “I really am. I shouldn’t have taken out how I was feeling against you like I had.” It took a lot, and I mean a lot, of strength for him to be able to admit that.
Admitting his mistakes was a hell of a lot harder than deflecting them.
You knew this better than most.
You tried to hold it back, but a smile crept its way across your face at this admission of defeat. For once, someone was willing to admit you weren’t the one at fault for their own actions. It felt good, hearing those words.
“Thank you.” You said quietly, slipping down a step, to better rest your forehead against the wide of his back affectionately.
Baji stiffened at this act, unsure of what to do or say next. His face was hot with embarrassment, and all the valiant words he had thought up went right out the window.
He couldn’t deny this feeling pounding against his chest this time. You were surely to hear his heartbeat at this distance. Shit. Was he actually ready to admit what he’s been feeling? Now?
“So,” your whisper snapped him back to reality, lifting your head off his back, and replacing the pressure with a gentle hand. “What were you feeling, then?” You asked.
Baji was again at a loss for words. It took him a while to gather the words he wanted to say, but you sat there patiently. You would wait for hours if it meant that The Baji Keisuke would finally honestly open up about what he was really thinking.
“I… think I like you…” he sighed reluctantly, covering his face with his hands. “It’s stupid. I know I shouldn’t feel this way. You…. You’re so… good. You’ve never looked at me with judgement; you scold me for being dishonest, and have encouraged me to be better, when you should have given up on me long ago… I can’t, stop thinking about… about how… I want to see you… I want to hear you praise me for my achievements… I want you to smile at me for no reason, to hold my hand, to listen to music with you, listen to you rant about your new favorite manga. I want…” Baji caught himself tongue tied, the red hot embarrassment of admitting all this choked him to a halt. But the emotions kept sweeping over him. Like word vomit, he couldn’t stop now that he’d started.
“I want to be by your side. I always want to be the one you go to when you cry, when you feel burdened, or happy. I want you to share everything you feel with me, and I want to… feel those things with you. I…” Baji bit his lip harshly. “I know… I’m not the best choice of guys out there. I’m hard-headed and brash. I lose my tempter too quickly, and I can’t promise I can change those things about me right now, but… I want to try. At least, I want to try being a little bit smarter. You deserve to be with someone who can take care of you, forever. Even if it means one day I have to give up fighting, one day, I think, I can be that person… I hope.” He said unsure. “Well, I can’t really promise I can stop fighting people, there’s still lots of people I want to beat the shit out of, your dad for one…” he mumbled that last part, but didn’t falter. “I can’t promise to be anyone other than who I am, but I do promise that… if you can accept me…” Baji turned, sat on his knee to be face to face with you now.
“I promise from the bottom of my heart, I will never hurt you like I did today. I won’t let anyone disrespect you, or talk down to you ever again. You’ll always know my true feelings, and no matter what,” Baji hesitantly reached his hand out to take yours. “I’ll cherish you everyday, and prove that you were right not to give up on me..!“
You cut Baji off suddenly, fat tears rolling down your cheek. You threw your arms over his shoulders and almost topped him backward into the pavement with hard harshly you embraced him. “S-stop..! M-my heart, I don’t think it can take anymore!” You babbled between giggles, and hid your face in his shoulder. “You’ve said enough… I understand…” you breathed out shakily, unable to control your rapid heartbeat.
Baji was successfully shut up, all the confidence he’d built up to confess his feelings suddenly shattered with your earnest squeeze.
Together, you both took control of your rapid heartbeats and sat in mutual silence. Seconds pass, and before a minute could sweep past, you finally pulled away to stare into Baji’s wishful gaze. You smiled at him with the biggest, warmest smile he had ever seen in his life. “Baji, I love you… I love you so much.” You admitted, and took his face into your cold hands.
“I love who you are, as you are. I think you’re cool when you’re in the middle of a fight. I love the way victory looks on you, the pride you have in your strength, the joy it brings you…”
“I love how much you care about everyone, even if they don’t notice it… the way you’re always looking out for everyone, and protecting them without them even knowing it.”
“I love when you’re honest, and bashful. The way you smile so sincerely at Peke when he curls into your lap. The way you scream when things don’t go your way.”
“Everything that makes you who you are… I love it. Just the way you are…”
Baji felt all the tension leave his body upon hearing your words. He could finally stop holding back the urge to say these words. He could finally be honest, without worrying about scaring you away.
Slowly, he began to chuckle. Low at first, and building up til he was laughing wholeheartedly. He wrapped his arms around your ribcage, spun you around and held you closer. You both twirled a few times like this before stepping off onto flat ground, happily starting off into each other’s eyes.
“You mean it..?” Baji asked in a whisper. You nodded back enthusiastically. “I mean it. And… you’re sure that..” you trailed off, unsure of what you meant to say next. But Baji understood. He rested his palm over your cheek, and leaned in close. “I’m sure. I want to be with you. So,” he smirked, and rested his forehead on yours.
“You’re sayin’ you want to be my girl?”
You blushed harshly, yet you couldn’t look away. Softly, you nodded into his palm, leaning closer still. “I… do.”
Baji was over the mood, and laughed happily. “I’m so glad…” he sighed, softening his intense gaze. “Then, it’d be okay if I kissed you, right?”
Blushing harsher still, you looked away just for a moment, then back again.
Instead of a verbal response, you used your tip-toes to hoist yourself up the necessary few inches to gently push your soft lips onto his own chapped ones. While taken by surprise at first, Baji quickly reciprocated your act.
Closing his eyes, he pulled you in closer, til it felt like you were melting into each other.
You felt weightless, swept up in his arms like you should have been a long ago. Having been swept up in that passion, after holding back against it for so long, neither of you could stop after the first kiss.
Again and again, your lips met in a series of pecks that felt sweet and childish, compared to how adult you thought the act would initially be.
Over and over again, neither of you knew when the next kiss would be the last, when the other would pull for just one more.
All the while, Chifuyu watched from two floors above, head slack against his arms resting on the balcony.
It hurt. He knew it was fated. Yet some small part of Chifuyu wished it was him, not Baji… Even though he knew it was all so delusional, it didn’t stop a single stray tear. The fresh sting of pain welled inside him again after he heard you two giggling so happily.
This was fate. You were happy. And no matter how many nights it would take to forget this feeling, he would be sure to enthusiastically give his blessing to you two… tomorrow.

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
You’d admired Baji for a long time now.
He was scary, and strong enough to do anything he put his mind to. He prioritized the people important to him, and took everything involving his loved ones very seriously. He was gentle to creatures weaker than him, and took them under his protection. Baji was sincere and dedicated in everything he did.
Baji Keisuke wasn’t a bad guy. And you loved him so much.
Baji, on the other hand, was having a hard time coming to terms with how he felt about you.
But he couldn’t push down the wonderment you always left him feeling after an encounter. You were his friend, no question. But you were so fragile. Meeker than the punks he usually rode with.
Keisuke still couldn’t admit it, but you’d successfully stolen his heart.
“Dude, invite her out or something. It’s summer break, you won’t see her for another month.”
“I didn’t even say anything?” Baji glared questionably at his blond friend.
“Didn’t have do. You’ve been mopping around all week. Probably because—“
“Chose your next words carefully Matsuno,” Baji cut in monotone. Chifuyu puffed his cheeks. “Fine fine,” he backed off, stretching from his previous spot as Peke J’s bed. “See ya then.” He waved off, throwing his bag over his shoulder and headed to the door.
“Oi! What for?” Baji complained.
Sure he had a lot of better shit he could be doing with his time. He could go to Akihabara for the weekend while his mom was gone. He could ride out anywhere he really wanted to and enjoy the summer time he earned. That you helped him earn.
“Why, i thought you were too busy moping around to notice.” Chifuyu joked without malice. After, he quipped his brand new phone out with a wide grin. “And if you’re ever so curious, Y/nnchan just invited me out to meet at the cat cafe.~”
The first division captain stared at his vice underling with a deep mix of emotion. He could identify one of those complicated feelings as jealousy.
You asked to hang out with Chifuyu? Baji looked over at the vibrant screen of Chifuyu’s phone, barely making out your name. Pink and blue bubbles littered the screen. “When did you get her number in the first place?”
“Not too many of the guys have phones, so Mom, Ryoko and Y/n are my only contacts right now.”
Baji suddenly really wanted a cellphone.
“So, you coming or what?” Chifuyu asked, throwing Baji a balled up pair of black socks. “Why would I come?” He grumbled out.
“Cause she asked me to invite you~” Chifuyu grinned wickedly. His heart stopped for a moment.
“Hurry up or I’m gonna tell her you bailed!” Chifuyu yelled before darting out of the apartment. “Damnit! Hold on you son of a bitch!”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
When the two managed to get to the cat cafe, they were already ten minutes early for the agreed meeting time. “Oh, party of three? Booth 9, enjoy!” The waitress purred once they entered. Confused, they looked over and saw you looking over the menu.
“You’re early!” Chifuyu laughed when he was first to enter the booth. “Chi! Yeah, haha, I was here when I texted you actually.” Your eyes darted over to Baji, happiness spread across your features. “Kei! So happy you came!”
Baji avoided making eye contact, sure to out himself shy if he did. “The hell? Cute~,” Chifuyu laughed again, his comment clearly coming off as more than friendly. Baji felt heat prickle his ears at this point. Was he trying to provoke him?
You laughed at Chifuyu’s comment, and held the menu out to the both of them. “I ordered a few appetizers already, the frushi is actually the specialty of the day!” You chirped along the menu with excitement.
Well, if nothing else, Chifuyu wasn’t a liar. You really were so cute. A little weird and outgoing, but so, undeniably cute.
“I’ll probably get an order of gyoza.” Baji thought out loud, lazily holding the menu in front of him.
Chifuyu ordered a blue ramune poured over a lemonlime soda.
Baji ordered a black cherry soda with a subtle vanilla cream mix rested at the bottom.
And after much deliberation, you decided on a rich brown-sugar milk tea.
“It’s a little surprising how much cats love you, Kei.” You admitted. “No kidding, strays far and wide can’t get enough of him. Baji actually always leaves his bedroom window open for—” Chifuyu went along praising his captain, ultimately leading to his embarrassed captain to cut him off abruptly.
“Oh yeah!! Didn’t you say you had a cat, Chi?” You asked.
“Oh yeah, Peke J! He’s adventurous, and visits with Baji more than he’s actually home. I bet he’d really like you.”
Baji just couldn’t put his finger on it. Chifuyu was just being friendly, yet somehow he was getting under his skin like never before. “Yaknow, Baji and I actually talked about opening a pet shop in the future!”
You beamed in response to the topic, gaze fluttering between the two delinquents. “A pet store?” You asked, nibbling on a gyoza.
Chifuyu glanced over at Baji, hoping he’d jump into the conversation.
This was his role after all, the perfect natural wingman.
Unfortunately, Baji only saw the situation for its surface level; Chifuyu was blatantly flirting with you for the both of them, Right in front of him.
Baji glared a little bit, and shrugged. “Nah, Mikey‘s talkin about seriously applying himself to motor racing. Sounds sweet,” he grinned his canines.
Chifuyu gaped at his answer. Was he trying to look cool? Was he seriously that oblivious to romantic ques?
Yet, ever the same look of amazement, you smiled back. “Motor racing?! I totally forgot that’s like, your guys’ thing, motor bikes!” You visibly prickle with excitement. “I’ve never been close to one actually. They’re really loud and kinda scary from what I see, but you guys use them all the time right?”
The both of them gaped at your reaction. “They seem pretty cool.” You laughed almost awkwardly, Almost as if to let out a hint, but ready to retract at any sign of uncomfortability.
Chifuyu looked at his captain, the stars glaring over his vision obvious. “Baji’s bike is sick! A Suzuki GSX250E! With an attached second seater. He won’t admit it but he saved up a bunch so I could ride alongside him to Toman meetings.” He praised his captains generosity openly again.
“Yer full of shit,” Baji laughed, “I had that thing way before you.”
“How thoughtful! Chifuyu’s pretty new to the gang, so you haven’t saved up enough for a bike yet, right?” You asked Chifuyu, the eye contact you shared making Baji feel a little … possessive? “I’m doing very good saving up for one!” Chifuyu perked up, eager. The only other person he could brag these hobbies with was Kazutora, after all.
“You have a bike model in mind?” You asked, tilting your head, as you allowed an all-white rag doll cat affectionately demand your attention. Baji rose a brow, your choice of words making him curious. “How much you know about bikes?”
You giggled sheepishly, hiding your face in the cats fur. “J-just a little. I just, got a little curious, s-so I learned a few neat facts,” you waved this off quickly, and drew the attention back to one of them. “I really don’t know much besides what a book would tell you. Are you trying to shop for speed or style?”
To you, it seemed like a genuinely honest and curious question. To them, they had finally found something to hold over your smart little head. Something they knew all about, and for you to be clueless!
“Baji goes for speed. I’m thinking as long as I can keep up, I might as well aim for something flashy!” Chifuyu admitted with pride.
“Oi, don’t talk down about my Goki like that! It looks cool as hell,” Baji kicked the blonde affectionately.
“Actually, that makes me wonder, how do you guys even get your bikes? They’re like, triple digit thousand yen. Do you all just have jobs or something?” You asked while more felines covered what was visible of you.
Chifuyu plucks one of the cats what began to claw biscuits into your exposed skin, and cradled it in his arms lovingly.
Baji struggled, stuffing his face with a third gyoza. “My bike didn’t really ride when I first found it. A real piece of junk. But I brought the pieces to Shin and asked if he could make it drivable.”
“Guess it wasn’t in that bad o’f shape. Polished up the framework and helped put the parts together, baby was driving the next two months.”
“So Mikey’s brother spotted you the cost to restore your shitty bike?” Chifuyu teased. “Asshole! I paid with physical labor for that bike!” Baji pushed.
Putting the context clues together, you asked without filter, “Shin sounds like a nice guy, helping you restore a bike so willingly. Maybe he could give you tips, Chifuyu.”
The atmosphere got deathly quiet.
No one wanted to say anything, evident on Baji’s hardened expression and Chifuyu being visibly nervous. “He’s dead,” Baji said finally, no indication to continue.
“Oh… I’m sorry to hear that,” you say quietly, briefly lowering your head to show your condolences. “Based on how you speak of him, Mikey seems to take after him. What does he drive?” You asked, making an attempt to sweep the rough atmosphere away.
To you, it seemed as though the subject of Shinichiro’s passing was an unpleasant one. You felt it impolite to pry.
Baji looks you over, noticing your calm demeanor as you handled the tense answer he just gave. He was used to people acting nervous around him if he wasn’t careful. But he liked feeling as though he didn’t need to filter his words to appear kinder, when he simply didn’t want to talk about it. Baji really liked the way you always treated him so kindly, accepting his sharp attitude without taking it personally.
“A Honda. CB250t.” Baji answered without reluctance. He didn’t mean to come off prickly, but the pause insinuated otherwise.
You began thinking something over in your head, before a cat pounced to get your attention, making you shriek with laughter.
“Sorry sorry,” you apologize to the jealous cat, divvying out a generous handful of treats. This distraction seemed to serve as a middle point of the lunch. Drinks were about finished, food demolished, and the sun was still high in the sky.
Chifuyu yawned, and stretched his limbs. “Way too nice to just go back home though,” he admitted, tossing his head in Baji’s direction. “What’s everybody else doing?”
Baji reciprocated the yawn, and rested his head on the back of the chair. His eyes were focused on you as you played so joyously with the cats. He couldn’t get over just how cute he thought you were. He’d be damned if he said that out loud though.
Not realizing he had went silent, Baji lost himself in through, gaze softened your way. He was so used to his obnoxious glasses blocking this lovestruck look, he found himself doing it again without them.
Chifuyu took note of this, getting mild second hand embarrassment from how oblivious Baji was.
Chifuyu wanted to feel grateful that, at least, you were too distracted by the cats to notice his captain’s affectionate stare. Except, when he glanced over at you, Chifuyu saw a twinkle of something in your eye.
You knew Baji was staring at you. And by acting as though you didn’t notice, you soak in the unintentional affection, with a blush and a smile.
Chifuyu felt his heart rate Racing at this point. This was The Most silent, yet intense, atmosphere of backhanded flirting, without so much as eye contact to fuel the flames.
The waitress had made her rounds by this point, clearing the table of everything, and asking you three if you would like anything to go. “I’d like to order two shortcakes, and three lemon iced teas please! One yuzu, rose, and lavender.” You agreed, while Chifuyu added a specialty lemonade on the to go order.
“I don’t have anything else to do,” you admitted while the three of you gathered your bearings. “Any plans?” You asked, giving no credit to Chifuyu’s exact same question that’d went ignored earlier.
Baji shruggled. “Nah. All that talk about bikes for me itching to ride, though.” He smirked.
Baji liked you, he really did. This whole time, he had made an effort to push you to not get too close. But this moment, covered in cat hair, disheveled and smiling so affectionately. Baji couldn’t help but ask,
“How bout it? You think modified bikes are cool, how bout taking a ride on one?”
The way your face lit up at his question blinded the two delinquents. “Really?!” You asked, clearly excited. “Well don’t get all misty eyed!” Baji blared back, embarrassed.
Once the three of you had gotten your to go orders, you all made way back to their apartment complex to pick up Baji’s bike and keys.
Being the sweet little thing you were, you bashful admitted the to-go order you placed was actually meant for their mothers. “Moms like it when you get them a little treat, to show your gratitude!” You reasoned with their confused response.
The first stop came to Chifuyu’s apartment, since it was two floors below Baji’s.
Chifuyu sighed, a little embarrassed at the way you chatted so openly and casually with his mom.
“She probably thinks y/n’s my girlfriend, she always jumps to conclusions like that.”
It was quiet when Baji didn’t give a reaction. He’d planned on simply waiting patiently for you to finish. He could help but notice the way you chatted this same way with his own mom.
“Guess that wouldn’t be so bad.” Chifuyu whispered by accident. Your conversation with Chifuyu’s mom died out from Keisuke’s ears, the only thing he could register was Chifuyu’s whispered words.
He knew he was overthinking it, so like everything else, he pushed the thought down, even if it did bother him.
“Well, I wanted to drop off the lavender tea and cake! I’m glad to know you’re well!” You went to wave your goodbye. “Finally we can go!” Baji grinned, hyping up his spirit to ride. “Not so fast,” you shook your head at him. “Still gatta drop off the cake and tea I got for your mom!”
Baji was stunned once again. He really did try having patience with you, but damn were you making it difficult. Without argument though, the two boys followed you to the sixth floor.
“Y/n!! I’m so happy to see you,” Ryoko sighed with contentment when she’d successfully tucked under her arm in a big hug. “Jeez, glad she doesn’t greet me that way,” Baji mumbled to Chifuyu, who laughed in response. “Cake and tea? I knew you were my favorite kid,” she took a sip of the yuzu lemon iced tea.
“Hate to remind you that I’m an only child, hag,” Baji bit back. “Gonna change; the cat hair’s starting to itch.” He rolled his eyes, leaving Chifuyu alone with the girls. “So, how’s my second favorite kid?” Ryoko asks with comical volume, aimed in Chifuyu’s direction. Chifuyu chuckled at the muffled “shut up!” that came out of Baji’s room, holding up the keys to Baji’s Suzuki.
“She’s never been on a bike before, so Baji’s gonna take Y/n riding before the meet up tonight.”
“Oi, Kei! You be careful!” She yelled seriously, sashaying over to the spare coat closet. “Do you have an extra helmet?” She asked, earning an annoyed grunt from her teenage son.
“Yes, I have an extra helmet-“ he tried agreeing with her, “is it clean?” She asked, making Baji pause his response. “…Who was the last to wear it again?”
Ryoko sighed, and pulled down a dark purple cycle helmet. “Please wear this,” she asked you, holding the sturdy plastic into your hand. “I used to wear it when I’d go out riding. ‘Long as you and Kei stay friends, use it for me, alright?”
Needlessly sentimental, you hugged her as you’d accepted the helmet before your exit.
“Where do you usually keep your bike?” you asked, aware that parking one’s bike at home can be dangerous. “Theres a cheap parking garage down the street.” Baji nodded in the direction of the garage when the turn came up.
Once making it in, the three of you circled the bike in admiration. “It’s nice,” you hummed, modestly squatting to checkout the details of the bike. “It’s okay if I touch right?” You asked.
Nervously, Baji squats beside you and made a gesture to show it was fine to do so. Ever so gently, you traced your fingers along the exhaust pipe, as though you would peel away the metal to look further inside. Quietly, you hummed, and examined the parts most visible. “It’s big though, I don’t think my feet can reach the peddle..”
Both Baji and Chifuyu laughed. “You thought i was gonna just let you ride my bike like that?” He asked as though it wasn’t even a consideration. “Huh? Is that not what you meant earlier?” You asked, embarrassed. Baji laughed again, barely making it to his feet.
“You dork! I was just gonna drive you around some backroads.” He ruffled your hair roughly. You gave a sheepish “oh” before looking away in embarrassment. “W-well, that’s fine.” You said, a little shyer this time.
Chifuyu’s eye glinted from your wit.
Chifuyu could read you like the back of his hand, a feat Baji was clearly oblivious to. By acting shy, you automatic lit a flame of nervousness under Keisuke’s idea of a platonic activity. You were hinting at the exposure—tiptoeing that line of flirtation neither of you quite crossed.
And Baji fell for your tricks like a lovesick fool, suddenly bashful and confused for as to why.
“What ‘bout you Chi?” You asked, lining the scene with a comfortable middle ground between both boys. Body language gave away you still tried including Chifuyu, as to not kick him out as an unnecessary third wheel.
“Kinda itchy with cat hair, honestly. Think I’m gonna take a shower and check out what Ryusei’s doing. Catch ya later?” He asked.
It was Chifuyu’s turn to finally let go of the reins; he’d secretly initiated the date, lead the conversation, and got you two to this point. His job was complete. Satisfied, he turned to walk away. “Wait,” you pulled on Chifuyu’s sleeve, subconsciously making the boy lean into your cupped hand. “Thanks for today, it meant a lot to me.” And with an innocent kiss to the corner of his lip and cheek, you doddled back to Baji, who’d bucking his heel against the kick Stand.
Chifuyu wouldn’t stop thinking about that chast kiss you gave him. How soft it was. How precise your movemeets were— you had Meant to kiss him where you had. Not enough to consider romantic, but definitely a forewarning that it could have been. He was swimming in those thoughts, even when he watched you and Baji plow down the street happily.
Was he seriously falling in love with his Boss’s crush?

“What, the hell, are you doing, Ryusei?” Baji aggressively whispered.
“C’mon it’s fiine! All I did was invite her out with us!” The taller boy laughed. “It’s not like you have anything to hide anymore.” He grinned pointedly at his blonde friend, who bashfully looked away. “I already apologized, damnass..” Chifuyu muttered.
Baji clicked his tongue in annoyance, fussing with the back of his head in agitation. “Whatever. Arcade is canceled.” Baji waved off, leaving no room for discussion. “What!” Replied a displeased grunt.
“I was looking forward to going, though.” You announced with crossed arms. “And stop trying to disinclude me, it’s very rude!”
“You act like you got any say in the matter, shorty.” Baji waved your attitude off with a huff. He really was stubborn, acting this way. “Last time I checked I can make my own decisions, Keisuke.” You rolled your eyes at him, linking arms with Chifuyu.
“Cancel yourself if you’re gonna be a prude,” you gave Baji a teasing smile. “But Arcade and Karaoke sounds like a great way to spend my Saturday night.”
Baji became stunned at your blatant shots against him, mouth agape at your new demeanor. “That’s right!~ Pizza’s on me!” Ryusei laughed in reply, draping his arm around your shoulders; lazily observing his captain’s next actions.
Baji tensed up at this notion. “That’s not what I meant..!” He spat, giving an exasperated sigh. “Whatever, what the hell.” Baji finally returned the teasing grin, dropping his glasses into the pocket of his shirt. “Looks like I get to school you in something for a change.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
Once Baji finally came around, the day out went fantastic.
Chifuyu and Ryusei would get into an altercation every so often, but your blank stare paired with Baji’s threatening one seemed to keep the two in check.
“How are you so good at pin ball?” Chifuyu marveled at Ryusei’s high score. “I’m good at everything Chifuyu~” Ryusei bragged before settling you forward. “Your turn, pretty girl. Let’s see what you got.”
Blushing over the use of this overly affectionate nickname, you shrugged. “I don’t think I’ve played this before,” you admitted, checking the machine for all its buttons. “The concept is easy enough, I guess.”
Baji subtly pushed Ryusei, glaring. “Watch it,” he whispered to the other. “Make her uncomfortable and you die.” He spoke like a promise.
Ryusei readjusted how close he stood next to you, embarrassed at how clueless he felt. Ryusei’s own crush on you was slipping, and as oblivious as Baji was to signals, the overall closeness between you two was making his blood boil. “Sorry boss,” Ryusei whispered.
You’d been distracted by the game and Chifuyu’s little tips and tricks, he hovered his finger above the glass. “This tunnel gets you a bunch of points, so try aiming there!”
Smiling sweetly at Chifuyu’s innocent grin, you elbowed him affectionately. “Thanks chi! Here I go!” You hyped yourself up, putting in the token.
It took a little bit of trial and error, but before long, you were scoring higher and higher numbers, seemingly never losing the pin ball. “No way!” Chifuyu laughed with a huge grin.
“You’re freaking awesome, Y/n!”
The blonde’s praise boosted your ego, a wider grin setting in. “Check this,” you grinned back, flicking the nozzle just right to trap the pin ball, earning an overarching highscore.
“No shit!” Baji howled, ruffling your hair in praise. “Look’t that, new high score. The hell can’t you do?!” You embraced his words, leaning into his hand. “I wanna try that next,” you pointed, crossing the boys’ gaze across the arcade.
MORTAL KOMBAT2
All three of them smirked. A fighting game. How ironic.
The four of you blazed past all the games, winning more than most and poking fun against eachother failures. Ryusei’s car racing skills was no joke. Chifuyu had a sharp eye for point and shoot games, and of course Baji’s favorite, were fighting games. (despite being his favorites, he didn’t seem to not be very good at them)
“THIS IS BULLSHIT!” He shoved the machine backwards, earning some nervous glances. “I totally—-!” Baji yelled, turning to complain further, but halted at your quirked brow, apparently amused.
Chifuyu noticed Baji’s wordless response, face turning red with frustration from losing his seventh round of MK2. “I’m hungry! Ryusei, treat us to pizza!” Chifuyu distracted the group, for his captain’s sake.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
The night’s escapades came to an end after long, the four of you laughing in unison.
“Thanks for inviting me out guys, it was really fun!”
Ryusei chuckled and wrapped his arm playfully around your shoulders, pulling you into him. “You’re the one who made the outing fun, princess~ Really surprised me with that death metal voice though.”
You laughed, clearing your strained voice. “I admire many music genres! Metal happens to be particularly entertaining!”
Chifuyu failed in attempt to hide a laugh.
“Your genre tastes sure are interesting, y/n!”
Baji seemed to recall something suddenly. “Speaking of, I just finished Volume 12 for Berserk, mind if I trade off for Volume13?” He asked you, earning a gasping reply. “You were supposed to finish NaNa! No more trade offs until you’ve gotten through what you already have!”
“Everyone, heads up!~” Ryusei flipped out a cell phone, amused.
“Come on boys, let’s take a photo to commemorate our Triple Date~” he declared jokingly, earning a harsh ‘ehh?!’ from Baji— and a wide grin from Chifuyu’s huddled closer form.
The photo encapsulated was a little dark and a little blurry, but clear enough to make out your confused face being pushed cheek-to-neck with Ryusei, Chifuyu’s bashful grin to the right of you, holding up a peace sign. And, slightly in the background, captured Baji mid-yell, canines full on display.
The photo Ryusei took, and kept as his cell phone background.
The photo that got you wrapped up in this whole mess.

June21st, 2004
“Who’s the girl, Ryusei?” Kojiro spoke menacingly quiet.
“Is she your friend? Really?” He scoffed, eyes flaring when he swung his fist against Ryusei’s cheekbone again.
“Thought that little tramp was Baji’s girl. You’re telling me you’ve been friends with her this whole fucking time?!”
He yelled, pulling white hair tightly.
“No…” he narrowed into Ryusei’s crying face, alone and vulnerable with no one but Kojiro for witness.
“No… that’s right.” Kojiro smiled.
“You were never friends. You’ve been planning this for a while; right?” Kojiro cradled the injured boy in his hands lovingly.
“You were never friends. You were getting her to trust you. Nothing more.” He cooed.
“You always were the more charming of us two in that regard, I suppose.”
“So tell me, Ryusei. Who is Y/n L/n to Baji Keisuke?”
Baji has drove down practically every road he knew existed. He loved his bike deeply, and made sure to take good care of it to keep it spotless and loud.
Driving down the road, he almost forgot he should be keeping a slower pace. It wasn’t like he was going fast, contrary to unanimous belief, Baji Mostly followed the law of the road. The only times he really said fuck the speed limit was during the night hours, when his bike roared its loudest, and the streets were at their clearest.
After being caught at a red light, Baji was careful pulling the breaks. “So, how is it? Need me to slow down?” He yelled over his shoulder.
“It’s fine! Just gatta get used to how loud it is!” You yelled back, giggling a little. He smirked. “Anywhere you’re lookin’ to go?” He asked.
A few seconds of deliberation, and you shook your head, smiling. “Surprise me.”
You could barely make out the road over his shoulder, your chin resting against his right back muscle. The street was going by in a way you’d never experienced. Neither of you did much talking. He was too focused on both driving, and how your arms would loosley remain looped around him even when you were leaning back a tad, the air whipping whatever hair peeking out from your helmet.
Being on a bike felt so exhilarating. It felt good. Emotional, you smiled, and rested your forehead against Baji’s back.
“You good?” He yelled out, slowing the motor just a bit so lesson the sound to hear you back.
But your reply wasn’t verbal. Instead, you hugged him from behind, and nodded your head, and he could tell what with your face rubbing against the back of his shirt.
Baji smiled.
“Hang tight, got ‘bout a half hour drive. You ready?” He asked, another red right, and a turn signal indicating he would be traveling Highway.
You grinned, doing your best to look at him, as he was looking back for you.
Through the helmet’s visor, you both caught each others stare, and each others heart skipped a beat. “Ready for anything.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
28 Minutes later, and you noticed the ocean coming into view.
Guess he took your statement to surprise you pretty seriously. Because surprised you were, as you gasped with glee.
How cute.
Once he parked, you could see the sign for Rainbow Bridge. “Figure you haven’t been around this way.”
“I thought you said you were driving me around Shibuya.” you said back, the helmet popping off your head like a doll accessory.
“Eh, plans change.” He chuckled, and helped ease you off the bike. Walking down, you saw a few people line the sand, but no crowding.
“You like taiyaki?” Baji asked you. You rose an eyebrow. “Don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t, why?” You asked back.
“There’s a place on the way back Mikey likes. Thought I’d stop by to grab him some before the meet up tonight.”
You nodded. “I’d like that…” you said, looking out to the waves. He was right, somehow. You hadn’t seen the ocean in a really long time. You tried not to wander the thought, but somehow a churning in your chest wrinkled your eyebrows forward.
Baji noticed this. He stayed quiet for a while, but the feeling Chifuyu left him with made him think he should say something.
Chifuyu was making strides in learning things about you. Your interests and insecurities. Baji didn’t have the nerve to bring it up. He knew there was something there. Your parents, the way you divert attention and remove everyone from your life to avoid… something.
He wanted to know more about you.
“Did you used to come to the beach?” He asked.
You blinked. “Uh, not really.” you said softly, looking out deeper. “Maybe once or twice. Not often.”
You weren’t lying. He could tell. But there was still something there, circling around that head of yours.
Baji Keisuke wasn’t smart. He didn’t know what was the right thing to do sometimes, but he always stood by what he believed in. He had to reach.
“What’re you thinking about?”
he asked, plainly. You snapped your head over to him, eye brows still wrinkled in frustration.
His own gaze stayed out at sea, the quiet leaving room for the waves to help you think.
Slowly, you looked back to the sea too.
“Nothing particular.”
It was quiet once again. Baji couldn’t think of what to say.
He wasn’t sure how asking you up front about your issues would help, or backing you into a corner. You could very well shut him out then and there.
He had an idea of what you had going on. He glanced at you. You did not reciprocate.
Baji looked back out to sea.
“I have this friend,” he started. “Kazutora.”
“He was a insecure little brat who didn’t realize his friends were using him for his money. He only had money cause of his shitty dad. But Kazutora was a good kid. He stood up for his friends, shitty as they were to him.”
Baji looked down, a pinch of hurt making through the cracks. “We both… made a mistake.” He confessed. You looked over at Baji, whose hurt expression only stayed stagnant.
“We both fucked up. We bare the same sin. But he’s the one who swung the damn wrench.”
Baji clenched his fists tight.
“He couldn’t handle what he’d done. The shock of it all scared him shitless.” He looked down at your thoughtful expression. Probably trying to figure out why he was telling you this in the first place.
“His dad was… well, he was a shitty and harsh guy, t’say the least. Kazutora never told me much about him, I just saw some of the aftermath, at first.”
“But that night, I think I saw how bad his dad had fucked him up. The way he was talking, devoid of blame… to protect himself. Inside, he’s a fragile guy. Accepting the reality of what he did would have shattered him, yaknow..” he swallowed hard.
“So he… made up all kinds of shit in his head. Things that didn’t even make sense. And yaknow what?” Baji chuckled humorlessly. “I blame that son of a bitch sometimes. His dad.”
“I had a lot of time to think about it. I didn’t get the shit he was saying back then. But I get it a little better now.” He looked down at his feet. “Kazutora‘s family messed him up. And after he killed Shin… I think that’s why he’s became how he is.”
You looked up at Baji’s angry face, a little confused. “And… how is he now?” You asked.
Baji sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair. “Completely batshit delusional.”
“You don’t want the specifics,” you did. “But he isn’t in a good state of mind. Literally can’t accept responsibility. I think if he did, he’d… he’d probably hurt himself, like how he hurt Shin.”
Baji looked back at you, the story bringing each other’s vulnerability to the surface.
“But you remind me of him sometimes.”
You gapped at him in surprise, but didn’t say anything. He chuckled.
“Like I said, not a Bad way. “ he ruffled your hair.
“Can’t think of anything specific right now, but… you act like him sometimes, about your parents. The way you avoid talking about them..” turning his body so that he was facing toward you, looking serious and sentimental.
“I couldn’t protect Kazutora. Can’t go back in time, but I can at least do the shit I think is right now. Right?” He shook his head.
“You’re worried that eventually, something will happen, and change me into someone... else.” You said softly, straightening your posture and avoiding his set stare at you.
“You worry so much. It’s cute.” You chuckled, “but you don’t have worry about me. I’m very self-sufficient. And I’m smart, right? Nothing’s wrong-“ you tried to once again, deflect his topic. “I don’t think so.” He admitted, eyes still on yours.
“I just want you to be honest. I want to know more about you… and I can’t when you shut me out.”
You clinched unto yourself a little. As uncomfortable as the idea of opening up to someone felt… It was Baji. No one to feel scared around.
You let out a shaky smile. “It’s not important.” You said, almost sadly.
“Guess you wouldn’t mind if I asked, then hm?”
“Asked what?”
“What’s got you so shift eyed? I get that your dad’s strict, but there’s more to it. ‘Sup with your weird ass curfew? Your mom too?” He asked carefully.
“Dad…” you sighed, as though thinking about where to begin. “He…”
“He’s harsh. He works too hard at everything, and can’t handle anymore stress. He has a very strict routine, and expects nothing less of me. He proudly raised me, he reminds me often.”
“Mom’s always just been quiet and judgmental.” You rolled your eyes. “She doesn’t talk. I know what she expects of me. She doesn’t need to waste the effort.”
“They work off schedules, and I only see them both one night of the week. Dad refuses that I leave the house. And mom could literally not care less, long as I mind my respects.”
“It’s not bad.” You tried to divert, but the single tear that ran down your face gave you away.
“… you sure about that?” Baji asked softly. You knew he wasn’t trying to be pushy, but he knew more than you suspected.
The bruises from all the inconsiderate shoving or grab for attention. A back handed slap for a backhanded comment.
You couldn’t answer him. Not verbally.
Your face tore into a guilty expression. Yet you remained composed. Biting your bottom lip and trying to blink back the tears that the memories surfaced.
“This,” Baji said softly, and gently reached out, tapping his index and middle finger onto your covered wrist.
“Did he do that?”
You sighed, wrapping your other arm around to avoid his almost touch.
“It’s not important. I handle myself just fine. Once I’m old enough I’ll move out and it’ll be in the past.”
“Just cause you pretend it isn’t happening doesn’t mean that shit doesn’t affect you.”
“I’m not affected,” you tried diverting, but he was right, and it was becoming overwhelming.
“That why you’re crying?” He asked, making you hiss in betrayal.
“I don’t understand what you’re trying to do here Keisuke.” You roughed out.
“I want you to get angry,” he started, in an argumentative tone.
“Why? I’ve accepted that it’s just the way things are. How he will be until I get out.”
“Shouldn’t accept that shit.”
“Well too bad!” You yelled, heat eating up your neck. “I’m tired of crying about it! Getting upset about it only hurts, it’s easier to just ignore it.
“Nothing I do is ever good enough; There’s always something I did wrong, or somehow I should have known better!
“I’m tired of trying to get his approval, it doesn’t mean anything! He only cares about how I represent the family. All I’m good for is— I.. I’m just a waste of fucking space. I don’t care anymore.” You got out, frustrated. You went into hiding then, crouching into the fetal position, hiding your face in your knees.
“I don’t care anymore.” You said softly, small sobs racking you unwillingly.
Baji sat there quietly. He did it, he guessed. Made you mad. Made you cry. Shit. Maybe he didn’t know what he was doing.
“… it’s normal to care about these things, yaknow.” He comforted. “Holding that shit in all the time is going to back you into a corner. I feel like you’ve pushed past a few breaking points already, haven’t you?”
You sniffled, rubbing the unnecessary emotion from your face. “It doesn’t matte-” you tried biting back, really not in the mood for this conversation. But Baji was a persistent mother fucker.
“‘Does fucking matter,” Baji was losing his patience. Baji Keisuke was hot headed and brash, thoughtful, and stupid. “I don’t care how strong you think you are, I’m serious. This feeling’s gonna eat you alive. You’re the most capable person I know. You’re responsible and resourceful, always handling yourself even when nothing is going right. You are not a waste of space. I-“
Baji paused, chocked up.
“Don’t take that shit,”
He was getting tired of your avoiding gaze, latching his left hand out to pull your cheek to look his way.
Your eyes were wide and red, glassy with tears built up from his harsh words. “You don’t take shit from anyone anymore, got that?” Eyes glued to yours, he practically ordered this. “He ever hits you again, don’t take it. You might not be able to hit back, but I sure as hell can,”
You laughed, genuine amusement whipping your face clean for a few moments, before coming back to scene. Baji smiled at you. “You can always crash at my place if you don’t feel safe, got it?” He regained your attention when you tried to release his hold on your cheek and avoid his hot gaze.
Your cheeks burned with how bold he suddenly became.
“I-I can’t just run away from my problems, yaknow..” you huffed, but tried relaxing in his presence. He did make you feel safe, even if you didn’t know how to talk about this.
“Then fight back.” He smirked. “I’ll tell him off right now if y’want.”
“Tell him off?” You chuckled. “What would you even say?”
“Y/n ain’t you’re fucking stress relief, damn prick! Show some respect, ‘f you don’t want me to knock you a tooth loose! Scum! Asshole!!”
You laughed pretty hard at that. Baji’s exaggerated display of delinquent rebellion speech was just too cute. “I love when you talk like that, seriously!” You couldn’t stop laughing, his cute smile pairing at the angelic sound of your joy.
“There you are,” Baji felt himself lightening up from the harsh mood before, happy to see you smiling again. “There’s my girl.”
You stopped at this, eyes widening at his bold name. This surprised him even more. Immediately catching himself, he slaps his hand over his mouth, face drenched in Red. “Not what I meant! I meant! Wait! D-don’t get any weird ideas!” He lied, spinning and spinning in words and excuses.
“I meant! I-I meant, you look more like yourself, now…” he tried calming his palpitating heart. “You’ve been really gloomy this last week… it’s just nice seeing you smile again.”
Your heart caught in your throat, holding back fresh tears.
What do you mean gloomy? He wasn’t wrong, you were having difficulties managing everything coming up, and the added stress of school and family was only dragging you further. “Guess I’m not that good at hiding things, huh?” You chucked without humor.
“Don’t hide it anymore,” he said. As though that was the moment he was waiting for. “Come to me about it. About everything,” he paused. “Anything,” he looked back into your eyes. “I like the real you. I want to be there for you when you struggle. When you feel like crying, or screaming. Tell me about anything that ticks you off, the things you can’t stand.” He rambled on, pouring his heart out.
He couldn’t help how vulnerable he was, letting you see all the shameless feelings. “I’ll treat you to cake at the cafe when you get a high test score, ‘n tell that bitch Futaba to fuck off next time she tries pawning her cleaning duties to you again.”
“T-that’s enough,” you whined and Baji’s heartfeltness. “I get it, I’ll… try not to worry you so much.”
“Ah-!” He hacked, how gross. “Got it mixed up again, honestly. For someone so smart, you just don’t get it!” He ruffled your hair dramatically, thumping his forehead against yours gently. “I worry bout you cause I want to, you just gatta let me, first. Let me be someone who can help you, even if you don’t need it. Not everything’s gatta be on only your shoulders.”
The tension was heavy; the slip of a confession so close on his tongue. Yet even with his passion reaching new heights, he still found himself tongue tied in what he should say next.
“…Gee, you sure know how to cheer a girl up….” You chuckled to yourself, a genuine smile finally breaking through.
And even though there was still so much to say, Baji felt himself cave back inwards, that smile of yours being enough to satiate his yearning heart.

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
“Say.. Baji,” you said, almost in a whisper.
You’ve been tutoring Baji for about three months now. He was doing well, well enough that he could get by without your paid support. Yet…
Even knowing this, you wanted to stay by his side, and know more about him.
You’d be lying if you said you weren’t attracted to Baji. He was gentle, considerate, dutiful, passionate — well, that aside…
You just weren’t ready to part ways. Not yet, at least.
There was just one thing bothering you.
These three months, you felt as though there was a huge part of Baji you still hadn’t met yet. Like he was only showing you a mask of a person.
You wanted to see who Baji Keisuke really was. Behind the thick rim glasses, behind the suppressed persona he claimed to be.
“Why… don’t you drop the act, around me..?” You asked, forced and meek.
You tried to maintain an aura of composure. Baji could sense that.
He picked up on your little mannerisms so easily now. The glasses actually ended up being a blessing, he was soon to realize. You could never tell when he stared at you, or read him quite right.
They kept you curious. He liked that growing curiosity of yours, and wasn’t sure if he was ready to give in so easily.
“What act?” He feigned jokingly, maintaining his composure without neglecting his handwriting over the latest study packet.
You gave your best glare, which only came off as a pout, crossing your arms passive aggressively. “Fine.” You sighed sarcastically, heaving yourself from your seat.
He realized quickly you were packing up for the day. “If you’re going to keep pretending around me, then keep it that way. I’m leaving. ”
What did you mean by that? What the hell made you so mad all of a sudden?
“Leave? I still don’t understand h—“ he tried to weave his way back into your usual groove, but you looked back at him with a somewhat… hurt expression, stopping all brain function he had.
The hell were you looking at him like that for?
“Baji.. I’ve done by duty as a tutor. If…. If that’s all I will be to you, then I …” you said shakily, having to pause a moment to maintain your poise composure.
“If you’re worried about how I’ll react to knowing the real you, please, stop. I want to be your friend. A real friend to you. I don’t want to keep pretending like I don’t notice the way you act differently around me.”
Your face was getting warmer and warmer, the more embarrassing things you were saying.
You weren’t planning to spill your heart out, this type of honesty was beyond your comfort, so why couldn’t you stop?
“Whoever you turn out to be, I would proudly stand beside you. S-so,”
“Wait,” Baji stopped you, voice stern and face completely hidden from view.
Baji knew why he’d kept who he really was from you for so long. He wasn’t a coward, he wasn’t hiding behind a mask because he thought you were shallow enough to shun him.
He was hiding because as soon as you got wrapped up in Toman, your life could be at risk.
Having no way to fight or protect yourself, being associated with Toman would only make you a walking target. Being involved with a gang was unpredictable. Some real sick fucks roamed these streets.
There’s no telling what one miscalculation would result in your inevitable pain.
Emma, Mikey’s own sister, had been held at knifepoint more than once. Attacks against her have been made more than Baji even knew. But no matter what, Mikey was always there to protect her and ensure her safety.
Could Baji say the same? He wasn’t sure if that was a promise he could keep. Baji is protective by nature, but throwing you into that life without giving you fair warning would be cowardly.
It was easier to end what wasn’t meant to continue.
“It doesn’t matter if you accept me or not.” He felt himself fall into poker face, acting harshly neutral. “I won’t let you throw yourself in my life just cause it seems fun. Our crowds don’t walk the same streets, y/n.” He hissed, hardened eyes hiding behind the thick rims.
Baji has never used this tone with you before.
You were bound to be scared of him now, (right?).
“I respect how smart you are, but you’re looking to get yourself killed. I won’t be apart of it.” He said finally, his things gathered and stature towering over you when he walked past you and out the door.
You didn’t even get a word in before he was slamming the door behind him.
It hurt to swallow, but he kept telling himself that he was doing the right thing, keeping you at arms length.
He wasn’t smart. He didn’t stop Kazutora before he made that irreversible mistake— to shoulder so much guilt. Baji hasn’t noticed that the bike shop Kazutora led him to was Shin’s shop. If he was just a little smarter and noticed that obvious thing, he could have saved Shin—- saved Kazutora!
… This is how he saves you, right?
This was fine, this was the intended outcome. Baji could self study from now on.
To hide this gnawing guilt, he buried it deep, deep, deep down.
Toman has a fight tonight after all.
The perfect stress relief.

Chifuyu had always wanted to be a wingman, and after he realized Baji’s crush on you, he was eager to spring into action. You were innocent and cute, opinionated yet kind. Quick witted and perceptive. Chifuyu knew you were struggling to keep your patience with Baji.
That’s why, when Baji made his dramatic exit, Chifuyu’s snooping-self quickly snuck in to evaluate the damage. And just as he’d guessed, you were left flabbergasted and flooded with frustrated tears.
“P-please wait! Before you judge him too harshly, let me speak!” He stammered. He’d never spoke more than a few pleasantries to you before now, yet there he was, desperately trying to make a case in Baji’s defense.
It took a little explaining, but without giving too much of the situation away, Chifuyu had managed to get you to agree to follow him. He promised on his life that he was trust worthy, and honestly, you believed him.
So that’s how you found yourself in audience of a bunch of thugs gathered for mischief just ahead of you. A long row of motorbikes rangling the boys into formation.
You weren’t sure where to spot Baji, his dead give away glasses being no where in sight. Still, Chifuyu promised that if you kept your eye out for his own blonde bowl cut, you’d spot Baji not far behind.
Before you could get a proper gander, you noticed two thugs from each opposing side came to the middle of the parking lot to speak, before ultimately calling for war.
You had guessed Baji was associated with some kind of shady pass time, as he did have a very intimidating presence, and he often boasting about his excellent skill of martial arts. To think he would put it to use like this was… <3
As you stood watching the scene unfold, you took a moment to consider if your lack of shock at the situation playing out should concern you or not. Were you more desensitized, or impressed….
You were taken out of that train of thought when a deafening roar almost shook the ground you stood. A scream that loud could only be made by a rage filled monster. And rage filled it was, Baji Keisuke’s patience had finally ran out, unable to swallow back that guilt he pushed so far deep. All the vulnerable sides of him he accidentally let you see—- revealed in those rare moment of gentle hand touches and kindness you gave him unconditionally.
He knew Your gentle hands would become soiled before long. His bruised knuckles would start to stain you.
Forgetting about you was for your best interest.
His hair was uncontainable, hair-tie snapping before the fight had even begun. His eyes were piercing and sharp, ferocious and merciless to anyone who met his gaze.
He stood out like a wild beast amongst helpless prey.
Baji wielded a wicked grin that took up most of his face, screaming out insult after curse as his fists broke skin and bone alike. He was ferocious. Unstoppable and feral.
It was normal to run in fear of such a creature, yet you….<33
“Hey hey hey! What’ve we got here?” Sing-songed a delinquent who did not share the same black and gold uniform your classmates had on.
No one noticed this interaction at first, but your shrill shriek seemed to alert others tenfold. It was an unspoken rule that if there’s a girl’s scream, you intervene.
“I don’t recognize that school uniform, what’re you spyin around us for huh? Want in on the action?” The delinquent held you in place between your collar and the wall behind you, his grip harsh enough to rip some of the cloth.
Any do-gooder would easily have stepped in to put the sicko in his place, for pulling an uninvolved girl into a beef like this one, but no one dared move.
Because there was a sick, cold, heavy air that swept the parking lot. A nauseous feeling that made any man back down. Everyone felt it. And Toman knew damn well to get the Hell out of Baji Keisuke’s way.
Chifuyu let out a yelp when he noticed he had pretty much made you a hostage, putting you directly in harms way. But you wanted to see who the real Baji Keisuke was so badly, and Chifuyu didn’t mean for it to turn out like this— and no amount of reason would spare Chifuyu from the beating he was sure to receive once Baji learned the truth of how you ended up here in the first place.
But with having no further context, Baji’s intense rage was fueled with worry for your safety. ‘Why the hell is she here? Did she follow me or something?’
Baji spat, dead focus not leaving your squirming form. The way you squirmed in the offenders grasp seriously made him feel like puking. The way your eyes desperately darted around to look for him broke his heart. So helpless, so scared… Any bit of restraint he had left suddenly no longer existed.
“Baldys got a death wish, eeeehhhhh?!” Baji graveled his most intimidating roar as the distance became shorter and shorter, reaching your side at sound-breaking speed.
Before the bold delinquent who had a hold on you could react, he was already being slung backwards. Gravity corrected you quickly, and you hissed when your knees met the ground below. Baji’s attention was solely focused on killing this stupid sack of shit.
Chifuyu came following after, helping you to your feet as you stare in awe. “C-come on, let’s get you somewhere safe-“ he tried guiding you toward an escape route, but you refused.
You remained rooted in place while you watched Baji wail on the poor guy. The force of his punches shook the offending delinquent’s whole body, head to toe. Punch after punch, his fists grew bloody.
Minutes passed, and the man before you had long lost consciousness. Still, Baji’s assault remained uninterrupted.
Surely he had lost feeling in his hands by now. The skin on his fist couldn’t even be identified as skin anymore, painted and dripping red.
You knew that when that block head was lost in thought, like he was now, you could never get his attention with words.
When you would study together, and he’d all but forgotten your presence, the only way to get his attention…
So, unfaltering, you laid one hand along the back of the blood stained monster protecting you. Without fear, you gently wrapped your other hand around his wrist. Immediately he froze.
The night was silent. Your lone whisper broke the tense atmosphere. “Baji,”
Finally getting his attention, Baji slowly turned his head to look you face to face. Eye to eye.. as though it really was for the first time.
Damn the ‘love at first sight‘ troupe. Baji called bullshit since preschool. But there was no better way to describe the unfamiliar feeling growing in his stomach.
Your expression was angel-like. Smile as kind as the heavens, moved with emotion. Looking him in the eye for the first time was also sending you into a vulnerable state. It was so pleasant feeling.
Baji couldn’t move, couldn’t breath, couldn’t think. You were literally stealing the breath out of his lungs.
Were you getting closer? Why did it feel like one side of his face was being cradled? Wait, were you—-
Your body moved on it’s own, unable to restrain yourself, until the very last second.
Baji could feel the gentle sigh of your breath against his lips, any sudden movement could mean life or death. He took a sharp breath in, but by the time he gathered his bearings, you weren’t kissing him like he thought you might, not on the lips at least.
Your lips gently rested on his sweat and blood stained forehead.
You parted, created distance shyly, and tried to glare at Baji. But it was impossible.
“I like the way you fight. Give it your all, Keisuke. You have to do well on tomorrow’s test, s-so try not to hit your head too much.” You quickly lectured, softly punching his shoulder, before awkwardly backing away. Grossly aware of your surroundings now, having All eyes on you was not a good feeling.
“U-um, anyway..! I’ll be rooting for you, s-so don’t lose!”
