but alas, he succeeded.

he searched on the bleachers for you, desperately seeking the familiar set of eyes that always had him entranced.

“hey, go back to the field,” you said to him, worried he might get a card for leaving the field.

but he only shook his head and held you tighter, one hand on the back of your head.

the supportive screams of the japan team fans surrounding you made you overly conscious of how this might be playing out in the eyes of the audience. a toe-curling thought and experience—everyone’s eyes are on the two of you, but you could only focus on getting him back on the field.

“i— they’re calling you back.” you pulled away and looked him in the eyes. “go. you’ve got minutes left on your feet. you got this.”

with a nod, he gave you a quick kiss and ran back to the field, his teammates welcomed him back with warm, awkward grins.

he can sense ego’s disappointed—or, frustrated, perhaps—gaze on him. although relief seems to have washed over the whole team immediately, as no yellow or red cards were raised, albeit his actions.

he took a glance again at the stands, and grinned widely at your way.

though, you’ve got your own wide smile plastered on your face—which you only realized to have on display when the cameras found you once more and flashed your pride on the massive screen.
