Hannibal With Disabled S/O:
@myers-meadow-selfship
These are specific to story me, but they can apply to anybody who reads this 🥰
Frances was never the same after they fell off that roof. Their body never fully recovered and they were left with chronic pain. But their high pain tolerance makes them unaware of just how bad it is sometimes. Hannibal is frustrated at first because he thinks they’re trying to be brave, but they genuinely don’t know when they’ve pushed themselves too far until it’s too late.
If Hannibal saw their hands shaking while doing a task, he wouldn’t silent to walk over and remove whatever it was from their hand. If it was a book, he’d offer to read it to them, knowing how exhausted they were. If they were in the kitchen, he would finish whatever they were cooking. He tries to let them be Independent but the kitchen is his domain after all. If they were working on a project, he’d try to convince them to stop for the night. And if they said no, he would go as far as to physically remove them and take them to bed, or cuddle them on the couch so they can’t go back.
If they were having a bad leg day, he’d notice right away. Wether they were limping and trying to hide it, he has a keen eye. He’d subtly try to get them to sit. Now if they were in the house it’s different than in public. They would specifically try harder to appear able bodied in public. Hannibal probably keeps their cane on hand, even if they insist they didn’t need it. He always brings it just in case. But if they were in the house, he’d be a little less subtle when trying to get them to slow down and take care of themselves.
If they started the day by crawling around the house, he will not be amused. It’s kinda hard to miss someone crawling across your house, attempting to act normal. He stare at them over his book and see if they would ask for help first. But if it went on for too long, he’d be afraid they would bruise their knees. Cue him picking them up again.
“Hannibal I’m fine”
“Darling, you are aware you can ask for help, right?”
“What do you think I do when you aren’t home?”
This would stress the man out. He doesn’t see them as helpless, he knows their capable. But he’s always afraid they’ll get hurt because of their stubbornness. Her understand they want to be independent so he won’t always just step and and do stuff for them. Instead he’ll offer his assistance. Perhaps standing behind them in the kitchen as they cook, to make sure they don’t fall. Or sitting them down and handing them things they need so they don’t have to get up to get them.
Hannibal is they type to make sure they have the best mobility aids available. And would make them understand that they shouldn’t feel bad for using them. If they thought it was stupid to use them around the house, because they shouldn’t have to. He would encourage them to push past that thought. And if they were nervous about using them in public, he would glare at anyone who dared to stare or say anything. He’d think it’s adorable if they insist on decorating their aids. It would show they are more comfortable with using them.
Hannibal’s house is more than one floor. He’d probably give them a room on the bottom floor just to be safe. So they’d have an option on low energy days. But if his room was upstairs, he’d quickly realise that they would have to climb the stairs to greet him. Which is fine on good days, when they’re legs are working better or they only need their cane or crutches. He knows they’re capable and wouldn’t be overly worried about their skills.
But if it was a wheelchair day, and they tried to crawl up the stairs to get to his room, or office. He would panic. He would feel awful for not being down on the lower level with them. He’d probably inscrit they text him, he can answer text when he’s working from home. He would March down the stairs and scoop them up bridal style and bring them to wherever he was if they asked. He’d let them sit on his lap on his office, or under the desk if they wished. He just liked the closeness. And if it’s the middle of the night and they wanted to sleep on his room, he wouldn’t even be upset if they called his phone waking him up. He’d rather that then they crawl all the way up there, he’d feel terrible. If they’re sleeping downstairs, he will check on them throughout the night, or sneak into their bed if he’s in need of cuddles.
If their fainting issue was acting up, this man would be stressed as hell. Hannibal is good about keeping calm on the outside. But he can tell when they begin to feel more tired or sluggish, or if they start zoning out. If they were at dinner with everyone, and they began to feel faint. He would just calmly catch their head in his hand so they wouldn’t hit the table. After they woke, he would also if they wanted to continue the meal, or excuse themselves to go lay down.
If it’s a frequent pass out day, he’ll cancel his appointments and just hold them the whole day. He doesn’t want to risk them hitting their head on anything. This way he can also make sure they aren’t trying to push through their bodies natural reaction. Because he knows that’s not how to works, you can use will power to suddenly force oxygen back into your brain. And he would remind them of such.
If they’re about to pass out when standing, he will cross the room so quickly to catch them. He would beat himself up if he was ever not fast enough. So on days he notices they’re a little off, he sticks closer just in case. He’d worry on the days they’re out of the house, or hanging out with William. He wouldn’t know if the man would be observant enough to read their tells. He would be angry if they got hurt when out with Will.
William is better about the physical aspect of their illness. He will give them a piggy back ride if their legs begin to hurt while they’re out. If they’re in the house, he’ll sit them down with the dogs, to distract them from their pain. William is more in tune with them than Hannibal gives credit for. Sometimes they might feel a little smothered with Hannibal, but they know its just because he cares. But Will makes them feel more laid back about their chronic illness and disabilities.
Will is very touch averse, but he will hold them if they’ve passed out, so that they won’t be alone when they wake up. Or if it was a high pain day, he’d let them lean on him.
On the mental health aspect, Hannibal is obviously better at it. It’s quite literally his job, and as questionable as he is with some of his patients, he doesn’t care about them. Let alone love them. I’m depression days, he’d help them do simple tasks, like brush their hair, brush their teeth, or help them to bath. He’d make them something easy, and not daunting to eat, just so they have something in their stomach.
On anxiety days, he’d let them be clingy. Secretly these are his favorite days, because he gets to hold them close. With no fuss whatsoever from them. He’d be the best equipped to handle panic attacks or meltdowns. He takes their autism very seriously. He’s memorised their likes and dislikes, and will try not to keep anything that would cause sensory overload in the house.
We’ve already discussed that some of his suits aren’t exactly the most friendly of textures and fabrics. But Hannibal has taste, that’s not something he’d be willing to give up. But he’s learned to not take it personally if they avoid him when he’s wearing wool. He’ll take his suits off when he gets home and switch into a soft sweater so that he can get hugs from them. He also buys William soft sweaters so he doesn’t accidentally send them into a meltdown.
He’ll keep ear plugs and headphones with him at all times, and just casually hand them to them if he sees them become more fidgety and aggravated. He made a playlist of all his favorite classical music to calm them down. And it’s very effective. If he notices their biting habit, he’ll keep gum on him as well, and get them one of those necklaces that’s safe to chew on. He wouldn’t want them biting themselves. Autistic people are more prone to self harm, so he tries to be very cautious about objects that could hurt them.
He can and will restrain them during a meltdown so they can’t hurt themselves. He doesn’t really care how much they struggle or cry, he’ll do his best to calm them down. He’ll give deep pressure therapy if needed, and just lay on top of them. He’s the type of man to rather have them hit him, then themselves. As well as with the biting thing, if they really can’t stop the urge, he’ll allow them to nibble on his fingers. Only if it’s in the house though, never in public.
He always encourages stimming, no matter where they are. But if they are at a fancier event, he’ll escort them to a private room so they could stim in peace. Not because he’s embarrassed, but because he knows people can be judgmental. And a round of questions could cause a meltdown. He adores their happy stims, and could watch them for hours. If they’re executed about something, he’ll let them talk until they run themselves dry. Then pull them to his chest for a well deserved nap after. He finds it funny how sleepy they can get.
He will buy things involving their special interests or hyperfixations, just to see them happy. There’s nothing better in the world to him than the moment their face lights up. But again, he is stern and cares for their health. If a hyperfixation is stopping them from taking care of themselves, he will take it away from them. It tough love, but he needs them to be healthy. If they won’t sleep, he’ll make them a midnight snack and some tea, and talk to them until they tire themselves out.
Hannibal doesn’t have all the answers, but he does learn from his mistakes. He probably has an entire file on them so he’ll never forget anything he deems important. It’s a little obsessive, but he’s trying his best.
A Dinner to Die For:

Meadow’s POV:
My schedule was packed to the brim today. I had an early morning meeting with the school board over coffee. I had three classes to teach. And then I had to be home for Hannibal’s dinner party. I was sort of excited for it, Frances helped me pick out a fancy new dress that would knock his socks off.
Sure, maybe my focus should be on actually trying to impress his friends. But I am a woman with needs, and what this woman needs is to be roughly manhandled by her fiancé after teasing him all night. It was the perfect plan, truly. Hannibal was a strong man, but even he couldn’t resist such a simple tactic.
I flatted out my dress as I got out of the car, walking into the coffee shops to see my boss already seated.
“Ahhh, miss Meadow, early as always.”
“Early is on time, on time is late.” I laughed.
“And that’s exactly what I love about you as an employee. Please, sit, I’ve already ordered us some cinnamon cappuccinos.”
“Sound delicious.”
“So, I know you’re wondering why I had to meet with you today. I’ve, there’s no real easy way to approach this subject I guess.”
“Whatever you have to say to me sir, I will be civil as always. There’s no stress here.” I offered.
He seemed a bit high strung. More so than usual. I suppose it wouldn’t be easy it be the head of the board or directors at a university.
“Truly, it’s not a big deal, but you know how these things go.”
I nodded as the barista set our cups at the table, thanking her and handing her a tip as she left to serve someone else.
“A few of the female students have had some complaints?”
“Oh? I was not aware of this.”
“It’s seems, despite me thinking your attire is completely appropriate, they aren’t on the same page. It’s petty, high school nonsense, but they’ve had some complaints about their boyfriends not paying attention during your lectures because there too busy staring at your um…” he cleared his throat, trailing off the sentence.
“Oh, alright. I guess I’ll wear cardigans to class now.”
“Thanks, you know I never would have said anything if-“
“It’s ok Herb, you’re just doing your job. It’s not my fault I have a nice figure, but if it’s genuinely distracting to my students I will try my best to combat that.”
“We’ll that was the extent of business, sorry I set so much time aside for the meeting, you know how it is.”
“Yeah. It’s fine we can just relax and enjoy our coffee for a minuet. It’s peaceful. How are you doing, how are the kids?”
“Oh they’re kids.”
I laughed lightly.
“That and huh?”
“Lacy is suffering from ‘daddy’s girl’ syndrome and Blake doesn’t like it. But how am I meant to stay mad at this face? I hate making my wife the bad guy, but I just can’t do it!”
He showed me a picture of his daughter. She was positively adorable. I didn’t much care for kids, which is why I taught in college. But I could appreciate them for what they were.
“Yeah, I bet with those eyes she gets out of a lot.” I chuckled.
“Don’t you know it. She’s learned the dreaded ‘please’ coupled with the puppy dog eyes. I crack every time. But Blake’s been doing good, he’s starting middle school this year.”
“Is that so? Already! I swear he was just born yesterday.”
“Time flies I guess. Lacy starts kindergarten too, so my wife will have some time alone finally. I feel bad leaving her with the kids all day, but she gets to go out at night with her girls. So we compromise.”
“You have to appreciate a father who actually watches his children. Do you know how many of the male professors I’ve talked to during our monthly mixers that refer to watching their kids as ‘babysitting’? It’s appalling.”
Herb groaned.
“God I know! I could never disconnect myself form my family like that. They’re my everything, no matter how much of a pain in the ass they are. Oh, I’m vo graduations on your engagement by the way. You seem happy, if any deserves it it’s you.”
“Thank you. Honestly it’s so strange, I never really thought I’d be the Marrying type.”
“Have any ideas for the wedding yet?”
“Umm no, we’re taking our time with engagement. Who’s to say just because he put a ring on my finger we gotta get married next month, or even in the next year. I sort of like the title finance.”
Herb laughed lightly.
“I was the opposite. Me and Henrietta eloped, my mother was furious! But we’re thinking this year we’ll have a proper event. That way the kids can be involved in the ceremony when we renew our vows.”
“Oh gosh, that sounds wonderful!”
“You’re invited of course. You’re the best person on my pay roll, I would be honoured to have you there.”
“And I would be honoured to be there for you. You’re one of the best bosses I’ve ever had.”
“You can bring the fiancé.”
“Oh, umm I didn’t tell you did I?”
He shook his head.
“Two fiancés actually. Doctor Lecter and I are polyamorous. I’m afraid my dear Frances would have a fit if they weren’t invited as well. They keep asking to meet my work friends, would it still be ok if I had two plus ones?”
“Oh, gosh, of course. I would love to finally meet this Doctor of yours, and Frances sounds lovely. Consider them invited.”
“Thank Herb, I’m glad things are working out for the both of us. This meeting was nice, you know, other than discovering a bunch of 20 something are apparently getting turned on in my Entomology course.” I laughed.
He awkwardly scratched the back of his neck.
“Yeah, wasn’t exactly the type of thing I ever wanted to have to call a meeting about. I really do feel for all the nonsense all the women on my staff have to deal with. Please let me know if there’s anything I can ever actively do to combat stuff like this. Telling you to cover up just doesn’t feel right.”
“Will do boss. You’re one of the good ones Herb, remember that.”
I went to leave some money at the table to pay for my coffee but he stopped me.
“Please, it’s on me.”
I gave him a smile before sending a friendly wave to the barista that had served us. As I made it to the car, I pulled out my phone to check my messages. One from Frances.
Frances:
Don’t tell Hannibal yet, but I had a job interview today and I think it went really well.
Also, I hope your morning meeting went well, have a good day at work.
Also, Also, I can’t wait to see you tonight, or the look on Hannibal’s face ;)
I rolled my eyes at the last message. But I couldn’t help but smile down at my screen. I was used to them texting me everyday, but lately they’ve been more into it. It was sort of adorable, every morning I’d get some sort of good morning text. Around my lunch time, they would sneak little sticky notes into the lunched Hannibal packed that had some sort of corny joke on them. And a “drive safe <3” text when they knew I was about to drive home.
I think they grew bored with sitting around the house all day. After much convincing from both Hannibal and I, the finally agreed to take it easy. Take the time to fully recover from everything they’ve gone through. They hated to admit it, but there was still a lot of physical pain to heal from. And more importantly, mental. But they assured me sessions had been going well with Alana. And I could see the fruits of fruit hard work. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them this happy. Other than when they were on the stage.
Meadow:
My lips are sealed. Meeting went well, Herb wants to meet you. I’ll give more details when you tell me all about this mystery interview later.
I’m off to work, today we’ll be discussing the Giraffe Weevils! Did you know they have them on display in the San Fransisco zoo? Perhaps we can convince Hannibal to take us one day.
Have a good day Darling, I’ll be home soon <3
I didn’t usually like to send emoticons in my messages, but Frances had difficulty reading tone. And besides, it was nice to reciprocate their energy, it made everything feel more casual. They always said I should stop writing my texts as if they were emails. And I think now I understood what they meant. I waited another moment before starting my car, and heard the familiar ding of my phone.
Frances:
Zoo!!!!
I chuckled. Of course that was the only part of that conversation they focused on. I set my phone down and drive to work. I was annoyed with my class for sure. It was entirely embarrassing to be called to your bosses office over something so trivial. But life goes on.
Class went by without any particular problems. It was nice that everything was easy today. No mess, no emergencies, just normal people stuff. And now I got to go home and see my beautiful fiancé and my best friend. And eat dinner and drink wine and not have a single cafe in the world. The perfect end to a mediocre day.
Hannibal greeted me at the door with a swift kiss.
“How was your day my love?”
“Good, it was nice Hannibal. We now have a wedding to go to though.”
“Oh?” He asked, leading me to the kitchen were he was finishing up the feast for his dinner party.
“My boss, he wants to have a proper wedding this time with his kids involved. He invited the three of us.”
“Sounds lovely My Dear.”
He kissed my forehead as I made my way around the counter to sit on the seat. He’d always playfully glare at Frances when they would forgo proper etiquette and hoist themselves up onto the counter top. I would always laugh because it never took him long to drop his frown. I didn’t realise a small chuckle passed my lips.
“And what are you so happy about over there?” He asked.
Oh he was definitely in a good mood today. Hannibal had what I would describe as pleasant moods. Almost as if he detail time in his schedule to have a nice moment. They were careful and calculated, and while sometimes organic, they still felt meticulously planned. Like he only allowed himself to be happy for so long, before he returned to being neutral. And don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed those moments. But this was so much better, to be privy to Hannibal’s natural and blinding smile was something I thanked god for. It was special.
“Just thinking about how lucky I am to see this side of you. You have a gift for making me feel loved and warm.” I said.
“Well I would hope my soon to be wife felt loved by me. I would be miserable at my job if I couldn’t even do that.”
A joke. A rare tease from the mouth of a man who was so stoic and apathetic. I couldn’t stop a grin from taking over my features, and frankly I didn’t want to.
“Oh, so I’m a job to you now hmmm?” I teased.
He made his was across the kitchen, leaning over the counter.
“I don’t hear you complaining whenever I say yes ma’am. And your heart skips a beat and you get that pathetic little look of admiration in those pretty eyes of yours.”
I could feel his breath on my cheek now. And I was certain they were as red as an apple by now.
“Doctor Lecter! Our guest will be here any minute.” I scolded.
“I could always send them away.” He said smoothly.
I had to bite my tongue to strangle the noise bubbling in my throat. Just then the door bell rang.
“You’re unbelievable.” I laughed.
It wasn’t Frances, they have a key. And I couldn’t help but wonder why they weren’t home yet. I sighed, putting on a smile and opening the door for our first guest. Jack and Alana, both always on time.
“Welcome you guys, please come in.” I greeted.
“Whatever Hannibal is cooking smells lovely.” Alana complimented.
“Doesn’t it always?” Jack added.
I let out a short laugh, leading them to the dinning room. One by one our guest for the evening rolled in, but still no Frances. I frowned, checking my phone under the table. Hannibal gently squeezed my hand and whispered in my ear.
“Where is Frances, Darling?” He gently asked.
I sighed.
“I’m sure they be here soon.”
Frances POV:
I raked a forceful hand through my hair. I was pissed, no I was beyond pissed. The audacity of that man, inviting me to an interview under false pretences. And now I was going to be late to dinner. This was bad. I felt awful, Hannibal hated it when people were late. And I was never late to anything. I chuckled at the joke I usually told about even being early to my own birth.
I adjusted my suit jacket in the bathroom and cleaned myself up before heading to my car. I used to just walk everywhere but Hannibal insisted upon buying me the thing. He even got it custom painted in my favourite colour as a surprise. I smiled fondly at the memory. As I wrapped my fingers around the wheel I noticed the faintest hint of a bruise blooming on my knuckles. Shit. Hannibal would definitely notice that.
I drove as quickly as possible to the house, fixing my hair and collecting myself before going in. The soft murmur of voicing was surprisingly calming. At least everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I quickly made my way to the head of the table to greet Hannibal and apologise for my absence. I didn’t want him to be upset with me.
“Je suis terriblement désolé d'être en retard, Mon Amour, le temps m'a échappé.”
I placed a gentle kiss on his forehead. I knew Hannibal wasn’t much for public displays of affection but it felt appropriate. And I’m as certain he’d think the same.
“Suis-je pardonné?”
I placed a hand on his shoulder and leaned in to give Meadow a kiss on her forehead as well as a silently apology for my tardiness. I noticed Hannibal’s eyes lingering on my hand and cursed under my breath. But quickly replaced a smile on my face. I swiftly moved to take my seat between Meadow and Will.
“Nous parlerons plus tard.” Hannibal offered.
“Of course, Darling.”
“You ok?” Will asked.
“Yeah, yeah. Just tried to get here as quick as I could.”
“I’m glad you could make it, Hannibal wouldn’t let us start without you.” Jack commented.
There was no malice in his words, just a playful dribble of banter. I sent him a small smile and rolled my eyes.
“We’ll please, don’t starve on my account.” I laughed.
The food Hannibal prepared was delicious as always. I didn’t realise how hungry I was until I took the first bite.
“So, Meadow, Hannibal tells me you’re a professor at the local university.” A man I’d never met before asked her.
I glanced over his appearance, it was clear he was trying to impress his host. But the smug look that never seemed to leave his face annoyed me. His body was tense, but not overly so. Like he was straining to make polite conversation.
“Oh, yes. I quite enjoy my job. I’m an Entomology professor.”
“Entomology?” He asked.
“They study bugs.” Will offered an answer.
“Wasn’t aware there was much to study there.” He commented flippantly.
My fork was firmly planted on my plate as I clenched my fists under the table and took a deep breath. How dare this stranger come into our house and be rude to my Meadow. But I had to remain civil, I’d already lost my cool once today. And being late didn’t put me in any favour with my beloved. I couldn’t mess this up, it was one dinner.
“Most scientific studies are actually quite impressive and require a great level of intellect, don’t you think?” I asked.
“I suppose so, I don’t believe we’ve been introduce yet. Frederick Chilton.” He offered.
“Frances.”
“Just Frances?” He challenged.
“Just Frances.”
Will gave a confused look from beside me. Probably thrown off by my unusual behaviour.
“I didn’t mean anything by my earlier statement Miss Meadow, I hope you take no offence. I was simply unaware of that branch of science.”
“It’s alright Mr. Chilton.” She shot me a warning look, “most people don’t put much thought into insects. They’re quite exquisite creatures, very important to our ecosystem.”
“I believe you.”
“Mosquitos cannot possibly be important.” Jack laughed.
“And that’s where you’re wrong Mr Crawford. They’re very important in the fertilisation of plants. Though I do suppose we could survive without them, no species relies solely on them for substance.”
“Like I said, not important.”
She laughed as his joke.
“I guess not.”
“Did you know the females only seek blood after they’ve laid their eggs? They require protein to recover.” I added to the conversation.
Meadow looked pleasantly surprised. I chuckled lightly.
“I do listen when you talk, Mon Coeur.”
“Are you from France?” Frederick asked.
I raised my eyebrow at him.
“Oui monsieur, I was moved to America by my previous dance company when I turned fifteen. Maintained my citizenship shortly after that. The United States immigration system is far more forgiving to children.”
“And what was that like?” Alana asked.
“What, moving?” I asked confused.
“No, living in France. Do you miss it?”
I shrugged my shoulders.
“Sometimes. I don’t remember most of it, stages look the same everywhere, you know?”
“Perhaps I should take you back to France again someday.”
Hannibal spoke up for the first time in a long time that night. He was often content with just listening, a side effect of his job I guess. His words were soft and sincere, at least he was content to be mad at me all evening.
“I would enjoy that very much.” I smiled at him.
“You’ve been to France before right Hannibal?” Alana asked him.
“Yes, a few times now actually. It’s nice there, very quiet.”
He was right, it was quiet. But I couldn’t really bring myself to miss it. What did I have there? Nothing. No one. And quiet got boring. But here, I was never bored. I had friends, and a family. The best partners I could ever have asked for, and I wasn’t even looking. I’m the grand scheme of all the bullshit in my life, they were more than worth it. They made me whole, the way I never thought I could be. I didn’t notice a small tear escape and roll down my cheek.
“You alright Frances?” Will asked once more that evening.
“Huh?”
I quickly wiped the tear from my cheek.
“Yeah, I think I just need a moment. Excuse me.”
I pushed my chair out from under than me and quickly sauntered over to one of our guest rooms. I felt stupid for crying. I hated crying. It was the absolute worst feeling in the world. Even if they were mostly happy tears. So then, why did I feel so awful right now? I heard a gentle knock on the door and was surprised to see Will. He peaked his head in through the door and when he saw no hesitation from me he entered, closing the door behind him.
“What, Hannibal couldn’t even leave his own dinner party?” I joked.
But it didn’t seem to land as his frown deepened.
“I’m worried about you.” He said.
“Don’t be.”
“I’m serious Frances.” He sat beside me on the bed. “You’re my best friend, and you deserve to be happy.”
“And how many times have I said that same thing to you, Mon Ami?”
“Une fois de trop.” He laughed.
It was nice that he and Hannibal could understand me. Meadow didn’t know much French yet but she was learning, and it meant everything to me. She was so cute when she stumbled over her words, and got all flustered after. William placed his hand on mine, making me turn to look at him.
“I’m just-“ I sighed, “I just love them so much, and I know it’s stupid-“
“That’s not stupid.”
“I’ve never loved anybody before William. And I guess I’m scared. We don’t exactly have the most traditional relationship.”
“You hate traditions.” He pointed out.
I laughed softly. He always knew how to make me feel better.
“What happened to your hand?”
“Punched some dumb asshole.”
The look of shock on his face was something to savour. It was hilarious.
“I gotta tell Hannibal but I’m afraid he’ll be upset with me. I was already late, and I keep thinking, what if this is it? What if he realises I’m too much to deal with and leaves me. I mean, why wouldn’t he? He has Meadow and she’s perfect. God, she’s so fucking perfect Will!”
I exasperatedly threw my hands up and fell backwards onto the bed. I hadn’t expected him to start laughing. Why the hell was he laughing? I shot back up and looked at him bewildered.
“Frances I swear, sometimes you are the dumbest person I know.”
“Gee, thanks.” I deadpanned.
“They fucking love you, everyone can see it. The way Meadow’s face lights up every-time you walk into a room. The way she leans in with a smile when you’re talking. And Hannibal, he keeps your favourite flowers in his office because he knows you’re allergic, but they make him smile every-time he looks at them. And he has a photo of the three of you proudly displayed in his desk. It’s the only piece of personal decor in that clinical room.”
“Really?”
“Yes! Frances nobodies leaving you. You think after everything we’ve all been through, you punching some idiot is gonna be the straw that breaks the camels back?”
“I guess that does sound kinda silly.” I sighed. “And Hannibal’s therapy is wearing off on you, you’re starting to sound like him.” I joked, nudging his shoulder.
“Don’t ever say that again.”
I raised my hands in mock surrender.
“Now, I know Frederick is another dumb asshole, but you think you can go back out there and not punch him in the face?”
“I don’t know, will be a pretty difficult task.”
“You’ve never met a task you couldn’t accomplish.”
I smiled.
“What would I do without you Will?”
“Oh you’d definitely be a total disaster.” He grinned.
“You’re lucky I love you.” I squinted.
I head him softly mutter a “yeah I am.”
The rest of the dinner went by smoothly. At least I knew if nobody had my back, Will did. Well him and Winston, that dog was the cutest thing on the damn planet. Will was the last to leave, lingering to make sure I was ok. I walked him to the door and bid him goodnight.
“You better give Winston and the others some love for me or else.”
“You spoil them too much.”
I scoffed.
“Says Mr I keep treats in my coat pocket in case I come across a new stray. Goodnight William.”
“Goodnight Frances.”
I slowly shuffled into the kitchen, knowing I had to get this over with. Hannibal was busy scrubbing dishes while Meadow dried them.
“I’m sorry I was late.” I started.
“It’s ok, we were just a little worried about you. You didn’t send me a text or anything.” Meadow said.
“Yeah sorry, got a bit caught up.”
“So you said.”
Shit, he sounded angry. I hated when he was angry.
“What happened to your hand?”
Of course there was concern, but his approach wasn’t nearly as gentle as Will’s. I fidgeted with my hands, but looked up when I heard the sink turn off. They were both looking at me now and I felt like a little kid.
“Does it hurt?” Meadow asked softly, breaking the tension a little.
I shook my head no.
“Ummm, I was at that job interview I was telling you about earlier.” I started.
Hannibal raised a brow, having never heard it mentioned until now. And I felt bad for that too. But I wanted to surprise him, I wanted it to be a good surprise. And now it just wasn’t.
“Oh, yeah, how did that go?” Her tone was a bit more cheerful.
“I got the job.” I said.
“That’s great, Frances, I’m so proud of you.”
“That doesn’t explain my question.”
I frowned. I knew he was upset but I figured if I delivered the good news first he’d at least be happy.
“Turns out, the interview wasn’t really meant to be an interview and now I feel stupid.” I mumbled.
All hardness dropped from his face and Meadow looked concerned. She came over to me, silently asking for permission if she could touch me, which I gratefully gave to her. She gently grabbed my hand, running her hands over the bruise.
“I’m sorry.” She stated simply.
It was sincere, earnest, now fluff to distract from its meaning. Which was something I loved so much about her. She didn’t surround herself with filler words with worthless meaning. If Meadow said something, you couldn’t help but believe it.
“What happened?”
It was still angry, but not at me. Which eased my nerves a little. I just stood there staring at my feet. I didn’t know how to explain what happened. I should have realised something was up.
“Frances, please.” He said softly.
I finally looked up at him and he looked defeated. It made my heart break.
“Umm, yeah.” God I cringed.
I sounded so weak and disoriented when I was upset. It’s like every word I ever knew flew from my head to fast for me to catch them.
“I was really excited when I got the phone call saying they were interested. But a few questions into the interview I realised he wasn’t really interested in an interview. You know I’m really bad about telling when people are flirting with me.”
“The interview was flirting with you?” And there was that anger again.
“But I promise I shut it down right away. I kept trying to dodge him until the interview was over but he kept pushing. He tried to kiss me when I went to leave, and I just sorta froze again. But then he started saying something about me not getting the job unless I gave him what he wanted and I lost it. So I punched him, god I’m so sorry Hannibal.”
I watched him take a shaky breath and prepared for him to yell at me, squeezing Meadow’s hand, but it never came.
“That’s awful, I’m so sorry you had to experience that.” Meadow said kindly.
She pulled me in for a hug.
“Why would you be sorry, Love?”
Hannibal said in a shaky breath.
“Did he hurt you?” He asked more evenly.
“No. After I punched him he called me a bitch. But I um, I told him that what he did was assault. And I may have mentioned that my best friend was in the FBI. So I guess I may or may not be blacking mailing my boss. But yay, new job right!” I tried to put on a smile.
“Absolutely not.” Hannibal seethed. “You’re not going anywhere near that man ever again.”
“Hannibal-“ Meadow tried.
“I said no. Frances there are other jobs, if I ever made you feel pressured to start working again that was not my intention.” He said honestly.
“Not jobs that I want. Hannibal I really really want this job. And I think it will be good for me. I can handle some perverted asshole. If I turned down a job every time someone tried to touch me I’d never have a job again.” I said dismissively.
Not of his feelings of course, more of my own. He had every right to be upset about the situation. We were engaged, I love him and somebody made me feel worthless and gross.
“Then you’re not getting a job.” He said.
“Darling, just please listen to them ok. You can be a little headstrong sometimes.”
“He tried to kiss them Meadow, does that not matter to you?”
I flinched a little at his tone. It was hard to remind myself that he wasn’t actually angry with either of us.
“Of course it does! How could you ask me that?”
Fuck, this isn’t what I wanted. I didn’t want to start a fight. Maybe Will was wrong, maybe I shouldn’t be here. It was my fault they were arguing and I felt helpless against it.
“I want to go down there and kick this man where the sun doesn’t shine, but Frances is trying to talk to us. The least we can do is listen to their reasoning.”
He sighed and turned back to see me now shaking. The panic in his eyes didn’t make me feel any better. He took a step toward me, but I stepped back, hugging my arms around myself.
“Frances?” He tried.
“Please don’t fight because of me. I don’t want you to fight.” I said frantically.
“I’m sorry I raised my voice. Everything ok My Love, just breath for me alright?”
I nodded, taking a shaky deep breath. He waited for me to calm myself a little before stepping near me again. This time I didn’t move and he swiftly swept me into a bone crushing hug. He gentle caressed my head.
“Tell me about this job, yeah?” He asked softly.
“It’s a teaching position. I’ll be teaching a few different style of dance to children a couple days a week. And one adult class on Friday evenings.” I explained.
Meadow stayed back, just watching.
“And you’ll be happy doing this.”
“I really will.”
He sighed once more.
“Fine, but I’m dropping you off on your first day. I want to meet him.”
“No!” Meadow and I said in sync.
“Relax my loves, I’m not going to do anything. I just want him to know he can’t touch what’s mine.”
I giggled lightly at that. Meadow rolled her eyes.
“So jealous.” She teased playful.
“I’m not jealous Darling, that would mean I’m envious of something that man has, which is highly unlikely. Jealousy is beneath me.”
“You keep telling yourself that buddy.”
I gently tapped on his chest twice, and he raised a brow looking down at me.
“You two are going to be the death of me, you know that right?” He asked.
Meadow joined in on the hug, crushing me between them.
“Oh no, dying surrounded by love and adoration, I feel so sorry for you.”
Her sarcasm was contagious. Hannibal rolled his eyes.
“Do me a favour,” Hannibal started.
“Yes, anything.” I said, smiling up at him.
“Next time you feel like you have to punch something, call me. I don’t want you damaging that pretty skin of yours.” He said smoothly.
He placed a gentle kiss on my knuckle and I giggled once more.
“Always the gentleman.” I teased.
“Are you alright from earlier?” He asked, referring to dinner.
“Yeah, William and I had a good chat. He’s good people Hannibal, please don’t ruin him.”
“I’m not ruining anybody, Darling, at least not anyone who didn’t deserve it. William is my friend.”
Such a simple answer. But I could tell he meant it.
“Thank you.”
I leaned up and kissed his cheek.
“I don’t know about the two of you, but all this arguing made me tired.” Meadow grinned, before sprinting off to the bedroom.
I followed quickly after her, trying to beat her to the bed. It was chidlinsh, but maybe that what we needed at a time like this. By the time Hannibal made it to the room, the two of us were nearly in a pillow fight. He chuckled softly leaning against the door frame. He cleared his throat, gaining our attention.
“Oh, and Frances… if your boss ever so much as looks at you wrong again, we’re having him for dinner.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at that.
An: This all takes place before they were ever married still. Also I picked one of my special interests for Meadow’s career so then I can write more accurately about it. Can’t get in the mindset of a super smart college professor if you don’t know anything about the subject they’re supposed to be an expert in.

France’s POV:
Today was the day, today I turned 25. It felt strange to say, and I didn’t want to advertise it to my partners who were both older than me. I brushed a hand through my long hair, and my fingers got tangled in a knot. Birthdays we’re always stressful for me, the company made a huge deal out of them, and so had my mother.
But this would be better. Just my friends and love ones and my favourite foods. But the stress was still getting to me. I stomped into the kitchen and grabbed a pair of scissors, rushing back to my room. I went into my adjourned bathroom and took a long look in the mirror.
“Ok Frances, you can do this, it’s just hair…”
I took a deep breath and held up the scissors, squeezing my eyes shut as I heard the sound of splitting hair. When I opened my eyes I was holding a huge chunk of hair. I should have been panicked but I was excited. It felt freeing. I saved a small bundle of hair and kept cutting, throwing the rest into the trash. It seemed weird to be sentimental about something as silly as hair, but just like the rest of me, my hair being seen as “perfect” was a huge part of my life.
Hannibal typically used the master bathroom, but he had supplies in all three bathrooms in the house. I riffled through the drawers and found an electric razor. Bingo. Hannibal and Meadow were already up and out for the day, finishing up stuff for my birthday party. I pulled up Pinterest on my phone and searched for a hair cut I liked.
I pulled up a quick YouTube video to see how to cut it, and went at it. After about fifteen minutes or so it wasn’t looking bad. But the bathroom was a train wreck. I walked to the laundry room and began cleaning up my mess. But this still don’t feel good enough. I wanted a bigger change. I was 25 now, supposedly a quarter way through my life. It was an arbitrary milestone, but it meant something to me that I made it this far. Despite everything I’ve been through.
I hopped into my car, driving into town. My partners warned me they’d be out most of the day, so I had plenty of time to just enjoy my morning and relax. Perhaps I’d get my nails done while I was out too. I made a b-line for the hair dye isle and began contemplating my options. I’d learned a lot about colour theory from Hannibal when he talked about his art. I couldn’t choose between the reddish orange, or full blonde, so I chucked both in my cart.
“That haircut looks nice on you.” The store clerk commented.
“Really? You think so?”
“Totally, it makes your curls look bouncy and light.”
I smiled brightly.
“Thank you.”
“No problem, have fun with your hair” she said with a wink.
The nail shop wasn’t far down the road, and I’d most likely only be there an hour, which gave me enough time to dye my hair, shower, wax and do my makeup before they got back. This was perfect. I was never allowed to wear nail polish as a Ballerina, so I had no idea what colour to choose.
“Hey, this may be a weird question, but could you pick the colour, design, whatever? Surprise me?” I asked the lady checking in at the front desk.
“Sure, I’ll take a look at your nails and see what comes to mind. Any colours you don’t like”
“I open for anything, I’ve umm, I’ve never done this before.”
“You’ve never gotten your nails done before?”
I shook my head. “My previous profession didn’t allow it.”
She nodded in understanding and led me over to one of the massage chairs. She started warming the water for my pedicure and I could feel my stress melting away as I dipped my feet in. A little makeover was just what I needed. I relaxed and closed my eyes as they did their job. I’d be sure to tip them well. It was a small shop that didn’t look like it got much business. But I found small shops tended to be more intimately run. It wasn’t loud or overwhelming here.
By the time I was done, I was ecstatic. My nails were coffin shaped, with a dark purple shimmer. And she added a little star and moon on my left ring finger. It was romantic, and dark and mysterious, and I loved it. As she was ringing me out, she gave me a weird look as she counted the money.
“I think you gave me too much, it was only $70, you gave me $150.”
“The rest is your tip darling, a thank you for making my birthday nails look perfect.” I smiled.
“Are you sure? You’re giving me more in tip than you paid for the nails.”
“I’m positive, you work hard. Perhaps I’ll stop by more often. It’s nice here.”
“Thank you, that means a lot. It just me and my family running the place. We thought we were gonna have to close down a few months ago, so this really helps. Happy birthday by the way, you’re so kind.”
“Oh dear, that’s disappointing. Well I know two lovely women who would love to get their nails done by you. You’re good at what you do Kid.”
“You don’t have to do that-“
“I want to. Best gift on a birthday is a smile.”
I pulled out another $20 from my purse and handed it to her.
“Keep this just for yourself, get yourself something nice for lunch.”
The poor girl looked like she was about to cry.
“Please, let me give you a free manicure next time for all your kindness.”
“Non-sense, you deserved to be paid for all your work. Just keep the lights on, that’s good enough.”
“Can I give you a hug?”
Normally I’d say no, but I was in a much better mood than I’d woken up in. I nodded and she pulled me into a hug.
“Please, stop by any time. You’ll have to tell me all about your birthday.”
“I will, have a good rest of your day. Wishing you some traffic stoping by the store.”
I had the biggest smile on my face as I drove back home. This year was gonna be different. My meds were working, I had a new job, I had too lovely attentive partners, and I was meeting up with an old friend. Good vibes, Alana’s coping mechanisms we’re working.
I went back on Pinterest as I ate the vegan quiche Hannibal had set aside for my breakfast. I cleaned and tried my plate and rushed off to the bathroom. After about ten minuets of contemplation I just decided to do both. It can’t be that hard right? I decided to stick with mostly the burnt orange, and do a blonde undercoat with one stripe in the front. It took about half an hour of struggling to get everything perfect and now I just had to wait.
I decided to multitask and wax, and do my eyebrows while I waited, it would free up more time for me to read and get dressed before they got home. I was excited when the time went off and skipped off to the bathroom. Enjoying the warm water as it poured over my tired body. My body was more sore than normal today, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me from having fun.
Hannibal had gotten me a shower chair for when my legs were too tried to stand for a shower. But most of the time he indicated on helping me in the bath instead. Which I didn’t mind at all, it was intimate and sweet and so thoughtful. He never made me feel like a child who couldn’t do things, he just wanted to make things a little easier on me. It was his love language and I adored it, just as I adore him. My brilliant, disturbed Doctor.
It felt so nice to be able to quickly run my hands through my hair and not fuss with it. It was so much quicker. As the steam cleared from the mirror I finally got to see the fruits of my labour. It wasn’t perfect, but it was all me, and that made it great. I could stop touching it. I walked into Hannibal’s room to borrow some of his cologne, and I noticed a large box with my name on it. I picked up the letter on top.
“For my beautiful Frances, enjoy you’re birthday my love -H.L.”
I smiled as I tore into the box. I placed my hand over my mouth when I saw it. It was the most beautiful suit I’d ever seen. The shirt was a dark red, with flowy, puffy sleeves. The suit vest was a black leather, shinned to perfection, that had a corset waist. The pants matched, but had flare legs to compliment the sleeves. It was perfect!
I let out a happy little squeak, not hiding my excitement cause no one is around to here. I quickly finished the rest of my skin care routine, and by then my hair was dry. It had never dried so quickly before. Why didn’t I do this sooner?
As usual the outfit fit me perfectly. I don’t know how Hannibal did it, it was like his secret superpower. And I was very grateful to him, for far more than just that. I curled up on the couch and waited for them both to get home to help them set up. I’m pretty sure Hannibal would insist that they could do it on their own. But it’s my birthday and I wanna help.
I must have fallen asleep cause I felt the gentle shake of my shoulder. I looked up to see Hannibal smiling down at me. God what a beautiful sight, how did I ever get so lucky. He brushed his hand on my cheek and I leaned into it, before he ran another hand through my hair.
“Your hair-“ he said.
“Do you like it?” I asked, trying to push the last bit of sleep out of my voice.
“It’s very you” he smiled.
That was such a Hannibal answer. Indirectly avoiding the question, but somehow still telling you and answer you want to hear. I smiled, grabbing his hand and pulling him down to the couch with me. He let out a sigh.
“There lots of work to be done, Love.”
I shook my head, leaning into his side.
“Just ten more minutes.”
He laughed lightly, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me closer.
“You’re warm.” I smiled.
“Somebodies clingy today.” He mused.
“It’s my birthday, I’m allowed to be. Besides, I just want you guys for my birthday. I’m so happy to have you, my love.”
“And I am happy you’re mine”
He kissed the top of my head.
“But we’ve really have to finish this up if we want things done on time.”
I sighed.
“Fine, fine… go”
I pushed him up off the couch, following after him to the kitchen where Meadow was. She looked over her shoulder at me and smiled. Quickly lower the temperature on whatever she was helping Hannibal to make and rushing over to me. She ran a hand through my hair and smiled.
“You look amazing. I like your hair short” she smiled.
“I was growing annoyed with it, it was time. Honestly I thought I’d be more emotional about it but I never want to have to put my own hair in a ballet bun ever again.” I laughed.
She let out a chuckle. She also kissed the top of my head, perks of being shorter than both your partners I guess.
“Happy Birthday Darling. You look amazing.”
“You do too, that dress looks very nice on you.”
One thing you learn being in a polyamorous relationship is how to share. And how to work through jealously. Most people would be upset if someone wore the same colour as them to their birthday. But it was work of our thing to match our outfits for events like this. For your average Lecter dinner party.
“Oh, Hannibal, Darling I did tell you my friend was coming this evening right?”
“Yes, but you still haven’t given us a name.”
He raised his eyebrow at me. I rolled mine back at him.
“He goes by Chip, he’s an old friend from when I was with the New York company, he’s only in town this evening.”
“That’s nice of him, I’m glad you get to see an old friend.”
I smiled a wide smile, the kind that hurts your face.
“You know I was really nervous to get up and preform that last night.” I said.
Meadow hummed, and Hannibal spoke.
“Nerves are typical before a performance my dear.”
“That’s not what I meant. I love being on the stage, no place I feel happier, besides here of course.”
“Good save.” Meadow joked, shooting me a wink over her shoulder.
“But you guys have never seen me dance like that before. And I guess I was afraid, well you have very high standards Han-“
He cut me off with a pointed stare, and I slowly shut my mouth.
“My love, do you honestly think you could ever disappoint me? I went to your performance every month for a year before that day. It’s not uncommon for artists to have more than one medium, or for dancers to have more than one style. I enjoy the show, because you’re in it.”
I blushed. Of course, Meadow knew he had been to a few of my shows before that day on the roof. But I never told her exactly how many. I’d preformed in front of Doctor Lecter thirty-seven times, and that night would have been the thirty-eight. He never brought a bouquet, only a single flower with its name written in gorgeous red in on a little note from him. H.L. And now, because of his gift from tonight, I had another note for my shoe box. I sometimes read them when I slept alone in my room sometimes. To overstimulated to be next to him, but not wanting to be too far.
“Do you remember what your first note said?” I asked, fondly reminiscing.
“Your performance was as delicate as the petals on this rose.” He let out a small laugh, “not my best work I’m afraid.”
“Yours was the first fan letter that ever stood out to me. And I thought it was adorable.”
“Because it is and now I’m jealous, why don’t I get any cute love notes darling?” She teased.
I watched Hannibal grin wildly, turning to look at her. He hugged her from behind
“Would you like me to write you some love letter my love?” He asked.
She simply nodded, leaning into him. Hannibal chuckled.
“How did I get so lucky with both of you?” He asked dreamily.
I shrugged.
“I don’t know but you’re stuck with us.” I joked.
When everything was all set and ready, it was time to start the party. Hannibal answered the door as usual, and as expected, Alana was the first to show up. Then Beverly, then Will, and last but not least, chip. It was just the right number of people without being entirely overwhelming.
I could tell chip felt a little out of place as he sat at the table, so I decided to introduce him so he wouldn’t have to.
“Everyone, this is chip, my friend from my old dance company” I said.
They all introduced themselves and I could see him relax a little more. Hannibal was plating the food, and I knew we’d all be in for a treat tonight. Much like Meadow, I wasn’t shading our lovers diet, but I made him promise not to serve anyone at my party. This was a special night, I didn’t want to to be tainted.
“You look amazing tonight Frances, are you enjoying yourself?” Alana asked.
Similar to Hannibal, it was hard for her to turn off her analytical mind. Once a therapist, always a therapist. It was something that happened when people were passionate about their jobs. It becomes a core part of their identity, something to be proud of. And why shouldn’t they be, both of them were brilliant. And both of them worked extremely hard.
“I believe I’m having the time of my life” I smiled brightly. “All the people I care about, together in one room to celebrate with me. It makes my heart feel light, like it’s full of butterflies” I smiled.
Hannibal chuckled, taking my hand in his and kissing my fingertips.
“You are adorable my love, Happy Birthday.” He said.
Of course Bev and Alana looked gorgeous as always. Red was absolutely Alana’s colour, it complimented her skin tone. And when we wore it, the colour had sort of a vintage, classy edge to it. And Beverly was the opposite, wearing a muted olive green that made her skin glow. The dress framed her chest in such a way, it made her long arms look dainty, almost as if they were the accessory to the outfit.
Chip was more causal, probably not having packed anything other than the stuff needed for performances and lounging around. I knew how things worked, you always wore something black tie at the last day of shows so the company could show you off. But I appreciated he didn’t wear that suit here. It wouldn’t have been him. He was wearing a simple black button down, with casual black dress pants and a leather jacket over it. It looked nice.
And William, William looked so pretty this evening. His hair was a little longer, like it got when he was too lazy to get a haircut. Showing off his chocolate brown curls. There was sometimes a curl that hung in front of his eyes that I called his superman curl. He was wearing a white button up, with a dark green sweater over. It complemented his skin tone well. But the thing that stood out to me was his hand.
“You painted your nails.” I said, glancing up from my meal to look at William.
Everyone else looked over at him too now. He blushed a little, which was adorable.
“You left you black nail polish at my house. You’re always asking to paint them, so I figured I’d try it out. It’s harder than it looks.” He laughed awkwardly.
I smiled brightly.
“You did a good job, I love them, thank you William. That was so sweet of you.”
He cracked a grin.
“So, I hear you’re working as a dance teacher now?” Chip asked, while clearing his throat.
“Oh, yes! It’s so much fun, I adore those kids. There’s this boy in my class, Damien, and he’s the cutest thing on the whole planet I swear. Damien is shorter then most of the girls, and he gets all shy about it. But when he’s dancing, it’s like he’s never been nervous in his entire life. He reminds me of me when I was younger.”
“Definitely.” He chuckled, “remember how nervous you used to get when you were called in front of the headmistress, little did you know you were her favourite and she was just trying to show you off.”
I blushed profusely.
“Oh?” Hannibal asked.
“She used to stop classes and make me redo the steps alone in front of the class. I always thought she hated me so it pushed me to work harder.”
“That would be quite anxiety enduring” Alana commented.
“Frances was easily the best dancer we had. I was entirely surprised when the company let her go.”
Everyone seemed surprised by that statement. But I was suddenly anxious. I’d never told Hannibal and Meadow why I actually left that dance company.
“Why would they let you go?” Beverly asked confused.
“Oh, ummm, there was this girl, Veronica. She was always jealous of me, I think she had a thing for Chip, and she misinterpreted our relationship and probably saw me as a threat or something. We were preforming one day, and she messed up a leap, falling and shattering her ankle. But she told the headmistress I pushed her.”
“And they didn’t believe you when you said you didn’t?” Meadow was the one to ask.
I shook my head no.
“It’s ok though. I probably would have never moved here if it didn’t happen.” I shrugged.
The rest of dinner was more quiet, until it was the dreaded time for gifts. Beverly was excited and gave me hers first. We had all loved to the living room, to get more comfortable, before desert. I was currently sitting on the floor in between Meadows legs as she and Hannibal sat up on the couch. The box was wrapped in pretty purple paper. It was small, and when I removed the paper it was a little back velvet box.
“We’ll go on Frenchie, open it.”
I blushed, Beverly was the only one who called me that. She liked giving her friends cute nicknames. Bev always knew how to have fun. She made everything a little brighter. I opened the box and gasped.
“Oh mon Dieu!” I squealed, “it’s beautiful!”
I pulled out the necklace, it was a little tear drop shaped vile. With two little rubys on either side, hanging nicely.
“I accidentally cut my hand open the other day, so I saved the blood cause I remembered you said something about these necklaces before.”
“It’s prefect!” I said, “creepy and pretty just like you.”
It was nice how nobody questioned the morbidity of it all. I knew if Jack were here he’d have something to say about it. Next was Alana’S gift, it was a little bigger of a box. She wrapped hers in a simple brown paper, like that of a lunch bag. It was simple, but the wrapping was crisp and precise. I opened the box to find a book. I pulled it out inspecting it.
“It’s a signed copy of IT by Stephan King. Open the cover.” She said happily.
I slowly opened the cover and saw the pretty red pen.
“A gift for Frances on their birthday, stay creepy - King”
I smiled wildly as I read it.
“How did you get him to sign this?” I asked.
“He owed me a favour.” Alana shrugged.
I pulled her into a hug.
“Thank you, I’ll cherish it always!”
William was next. He handed me a box that was bigger than the rest. It was wrapped in black paper with a little red bow on top. It looked like he must have asked Alana for help with wrapping it. I chuckled at the thought of him struggling to make it look nice. Not that it mattered to me, but it was a nice little detail. I opened it to see a black shape, I slowly pulled out a large blanket.
“It’s umm, all your favourite bands. I’ve been collecting the t-shirts all year, and I had a friend make it for you.”
“William,” I said, trying not to cry.
“This is amazing, thank you.”
I swore I’ve never been happier than I was in this movement, surrounded by so much love and people who understood me in a way the world never could. Chip reached into his pocket.
“We’ll my gift isn’t as extravagant as everyone else’s, but I tried.” He laughed awkwardly.
He pulled out a little wrapped cupcake, a birthday candle and a lighter.
“Like old times?” He asked.
And that was when I broke. A tear slipped out of my eye as a I took the cupcake out of his hand and unwrapped it, setting it down on the coffee table, he stuck the little candle in it. I tried wiping the tears from my eyes. Hannibal softly rubbed my back.
“Why are you crying darling?” He asked concerned.
“Sorry, I’m just so happy right now. It’s a little bit much.” I said.
“Aww, Frances you don’t have to apologise for that.” Meadow said softly, “we love seeing you happy.”
I smiled up at them.
“We never really had birthdays growing up, the company didn’t spare much time for outside activities. But every year at midnight on my birthday, Chip and I would sneak down to the vending machine and get a cupcake to split. He’d put a little candle in it and we would blow it out when it hit midnight.” I explained.
“It wasn’t much, but it was the best we could do.” He shrugged.
“It means everything to me, thank you friend.”
I knew Hannibal had made an actual cake, but it felt right to sing over my little cupcake. I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face as I finally blew out the candle. This evening was perfect. By the time everyone left I was exhausted, but my heart still felt fluttery.
“I’m so proud of you Darling.” Hannibal said.
I looked up at him.
“Huh, why?”
“You did so well today. You enjoyed yourself. It was nice to see. How are you feeling, I know you get a little anxious after gatherings.”
“Amazing!” I squealed, “that was the most fun I had in a whole. Thank you, both of you. I know you would have preferred a bigger party Hannibal but-“
“It’s you’re birthday, it isn’t about me. You know I would do anything for you my love.”
I giggled, standing on my tippy toes and kissing him on the cheek. We had finished cleaning everything up and we’re now lazily laying on the couch. My head on Hannibal’s lap and my feet on Meadow’s. We had a horror movie turned on in the background to finish off the night.
“Would you like to know what Hannibal and I got you now?” Meadow asked.
“You got me more?” I said.
She chuckled.
“We didn’t want to overwhelm you earlier by making you open it in front of everyone else.”
“That’s not exactly something you say when you don’t want someone to be anxious Hannibal” I poked fun lightly.
But I was nervous, they already spoiled me way too much. I was afraid I couldn’t handle much more. My excitement had its limits before it spiralled into madness. And that was the last thing I needed right now. To have a full blown meltdown on my birthday. In front of the two people I love most in this world.
Meadow got up off the couch and walked over to the counter grabbing something. She came back and sat back down, handing me an envelope. I starred at it confused. What could they have possibly gotten me? I shakily opened the envelope and pulled out some card stock. I flipped it over in my hands and gasped.
“No.” I said, “you didn’t”
“We’ve already got everything planned my love, you don’t have to worry about anything”
“And what about my bugs?”
“That’s why I pulled William aside earlier, he’s willing to watch your bugs.”
I was about to start crying again. I didn’t mean to, there were just so many emotions happening right now. I rubbed the plane tickets in my hand, just staring blankly at the sealing.
“How long?”
“One month, but we can always leave sooner if you want to and just come back home. My boss gave me time off work, and Hannibal has his schedule cleared as well. We’ve already packed everything for you darling.” Meadow explained.
“Why are you both so perfect?” I asked.
I felt Hannibal’s chest rumble and he laughed. Their distinct sounds harmonising with each other.
“You’re really taking me back home to France for a whole month? There so much I’ll want to show you!”
“Then we leave in the morning my love”
He leaned down and kissed my forehead.
“Happy Birthday Frances.”
“Happy birthday Honey” Meadow said.
We laid on the couch the rest of the evening. Hannibal letting us enjoy watching American Psycho without telling us how inaccurate the whole things was. Tonight was perfect.
An: God this poor woman needed some comfort for once. This chapter was so much fun to write! I hope y’all enjoy it as much as I did 🥰
Intimate Birthday Party:
CW: just some light smut
An: This is part one of the birthday storyline. I wasn’t feeling well today so I didn’t feel like writing all of it at once. But I still wanted to post 🥰
Hannibal’s POV:
Today was the day before France’s Birthday. My Beloved was about to celebrate another year around the sun. And I wanted to see to it that everything was perfect for them. Meadow had know Frances longer than I had, so there were many secret conversations while Frances was away.
I smiled, sitting up in bed and glancing down at my beautiful fiancé. Part of me wanted to rush this wedding, speed things up so I could call her my wife already. Not that it would change the dynamic of our relationship in the slightest, but I was eager to have her take my last name. She looked so delicate and innocent when she was a sleep. Her hair splayed out on the pillow, and her face fully relaxed for once.
It was a subtle thing I had noticed about her. Her jaw was almost always tense while she was awake. She always had a look of determination when she was concentrated on something. Wether that be work, helping me in the kitchen, or reading with Frances. I’ve gently brushed a lock of hair out of her face, resting my hand on her cheek as she leaned into it. It was endearing, watching her natural reactions.
“Godmorgen min sovende skønhed” I said simply.
She leaned further into my touch and gave me a lazy half cocked smile.
“Good morning handsome.” She greeted.
“I was going to let you sleep, but I’m afraid we have quite a busy day ahead of us.”
She hummed lightly, pushing herself onto her elbows and scooting up the bed. She turned her full attention to me, eyes still heavy with sleep.
“Hannibal did you-“
“Already have the next few days off work, My Love.”
“And the gift?”
“Already bought.”
“Do you think, perhaps we should give them their main gift today? You know how they hate to be put on the spot.”
“While I would love to do it at the party, I do agree with you my dear. Dinner is just three three of us this evening, we can present it together then.”
She gave me the most breathtaking smile. Her eyes finally lighting up as the last of sleep left her body. She looked the prettiest to me in the morning. Lazily wearing one of my silk dress shirts that covered every curve of her body flawlessly. It seemed she’d caught on to my train of thought, as she playfully rolled her eyes at me.
“Hannibal, we have far too much to do today. You know how stressed I’ll get if we don’t pull this off.”
“Which is precisely why you should relax, Min smukke engel.”
“Hannibal-“ she tried again.
But I wasn’t really listening. It was invigorating watching her get all flustered. I moved myself on top of her, caging her head onto the pillow with both my hands trapping her on either side. She first looked at me with a glare, but it quickly softened. A gentle chuckle passed her lips.
“Is this why you woke me before the alarm?” She asked, bemused.
I bent down, placing a kiss on her forehead, then slowly trailing kisses down her face. Her giggles made my heart feel light.
“Frances will be asleep for at least another hour. We should let them rest their birthday week, Hmm?”
“You’re impossible.” She said playfully, hitting my chest.
I continued trailing kisses down her neck. Humming thoughtfully as if to agree with her observation.
“I don’t hear you complaining.” I smirked into the crook of her neck, just above her collar bones.
When she didn’t speak again, I softly bit down on the skin there, causing a soft gaps to leave her lips. I chuckled darkly.
“Fine.” She agreed.
I knew she’d be stressed for the next two days, and I would be ghastly fiancé if I didn’t try to help her relieve some of that stress. I continued my assault on her flesh, helping her unbutton the shirt that hung over her chest. She looked up at me with so much love and adoration in her eyes, I could hardly control myself. I pushed her back down onto the bed, continuing my kisses down her body.
“Hannibal, you’re wearing far too many clothes right now. It’s not fair.” She pouted.
I smirked, stealing her in a kiss before pulling back to pull my sleep shirt over my head. Her eyes hungrily raked down my body, as her hands were firmly planted on my chest. I pulled her further down the bed by my legs, helping her pick off her sleep shorts. I was surprised to notice she was wearing red lace panties, a smirk firmly planted back on my face.
I tsked, shaking my head at her.
“Are you sure you’re didn’t plan this morning in your head my love?” I teased.
Her cheeked reddens deliciously, as she tried to hide her face in the crook of my neck.
“Hannibal-“
“Yes Love?”
“Quit teasing me.”
If looks could kill, the glare she sent would have surly caused a heart attack. I went back to trailing kisses down her stomach, until my lips met the edge of the delicate fabric. I softly took her panties between my teeth and wiggled them down her legs. But my eyes never once left hers, watching every micro reaction on her face that she tried to desperately to hide.
I liked moment like this, when she was more shy. Letting me be in full control. Letting me do whatever I wanted to her gorgeous body. Certainly one of the biggest perks of our relationship, I could not lie about that. She let out a hiss as I latched my mouth around her clitoris. Sucking on it, like my life depended on it. She tasted so sweet, but got the whimpers she let out were the star of the show. They made every hair on my body stand in end, and sent waves of electricity down my spine.
I knew full well there was a time limit, but if I was being honest, I could do this for hours. Desperately making her come undone over and over just to see how much her body could handle. How long before her normally eloquent words dissolved into madness and whines. My hands were firmly planted on her plush thighs, keeping her pinned down beneath me. I could feel her muscles flutter every-time I licked her pussy.
Her hands were instantly in my hair, greedily pushing me down to provide more pressure.
“Mmm, fuck Hannibal!” She moaned.
I pulled away.
“I’m barely even touching you.”
She opened her eyes, glaring at me once more.
“I believe your mouth has much more important business to attend to right now Doctor.”
She knew I loved it when she used my title in the bathroom. It sounded so dreamy rolling off her sweet tongue.
“My apologises.” I said, pulling her into a passionate kiss to show her I meant it.
“Mmm, I’m sure you are.” She sassed back.
I was quickly back at work, moving my tongue expertly with my hand splayed out on her stomach. I could feel the muscles tensing, and I knew she was getting close. She tried to muffle her moans by shoving her head into the pillow. But I reached up with my other hand and threw the pillow off the bed. She went to protest, but I stuck my fingers in her mouth to silence her.
She lazily sucked in my digits, bucking her hips in time with my graceful strokes. She popped my fingers out of her mouth as she threw her head back and came into mine. But I wasn’t going to stop there. We still had at least another 45 minueted before we truly had to get up for the day.
I helped her get dressed for the day, throwing her hair up into a tight ponytail so it wouldn’t bother her. I was surprised to see Frances already up and about in the kitchen. Unlike Meadow and I, there job was mostly centred around the evening. Having to wait for the children to be done with their regular school before they could teach.
It wasn’t that difficult to work out the schedules so we still all had time together. But they normally we’re awake until at least noon.
“Somebodies up early.” Meadow mused.
“We’ll I see you both had some fun this morning. Good morning Hannibal, Meadow.” They greeted, sipping from their tea.
I don’t know why Meadow seemed shocked, she gave up on attempting to be quiet about halfway through our morning. Not that I was complaining.
“How?”
“You’re legs are still trembling darling. Hannibal, perhaps you should go easy on her yeah? You do know birthday sex is usually reserved for the actual birthday person right?” They mused.
Meadow rolled her eyes.
“My apologises your birthday majesty, could you ever forgive us?”
Meadow did a mock curtesy.
“I could be persuaded.” They hummed.
I walked around the table to kiss Frances on the head, and they looked up at me with those big dark eyes. It was almost impossible to look away once they actually decided to make eye contact. The moment being so intimate in the most raw of ways.
“Good morning, Love.” I greeted.
“Bonjour amant!” They said back.
Their accent was always thicker first thing in the morning. When they were still to tired to mask it. It was the most adorable thing.
“Hannibal, Darling, I know you planned to have dinner, just the three of us this evening. Which, of course, we can still do. But-“
“It’s your birthday my dear, we can do whatever it is that you want.”
“I was invited to star in a showcase across town this evening. The lead has unfortunately fallen I’ll, and they don’t have time to train anyone else on the choreography. One of my old friends from the dance company up in New York, is directing it. I told him I would have to ask before accepting.” They explained.
“Oo, what a treat. We get to watch you perform fro your birthday.” Meadow said excitedly.
I was a little concerned, they hadn’t been back on the stage since we first met. But they’ve been working hard with their physical therapy and getting stronger each day. And I suppose with their teaching job, they’re gotten in some stretching and stamina practice. They genteelly reached up and kissed between my eyebrows.
“You’re thinking to hard My Love. Relax.”
I pulled out the chair beside them and sat.
“If it will make you happy, then Meadow and I will be glad to come watch. We can push dinner back.”
They grinned wildly. They turned to Meadow.
“Meadow, dear, would you mind if we pushed breakfast back as well. I would like to spend some time alone with our Fiancé this morning.”
I couldn’t blame Frances, the two of us had been rather busy recently. It was their birthday, they could have anything they asked for.
“Go ahead. I’ve already hogged him for most of the morning.” There was a tiny tinge of guilt in her voice.
I remember when this relationship first came to be, sprouted fun to the amazing thing that it was today. Alana had some doubts that one or both of them might get jealous, or feel unloved. But I did my best to make sure neither of them felt more important than the other. It came almost naturally. And communication made it easier.
Despite Frances a being on the younger side, they were surpassingly mature about everything. Only ever playfully teasing, there was never any malleus or envy in their words.
“Perhaps we don’t even cook breakfast today. I could go into the city and pick up for favourite pastries form that coffee shop you enjoy so much.”
“Meadow you don’t have to do that.”
“I insist. You’d do the same for me on a regular day. But the next two days are all about you. Enjoy it.”
“The two of you spoil me too much.” They muttered.
“I disagree, we don’t spoil you quite enough.”
They laughed, throwing their head back.
“Of course you would say that Mr Money Bags. I swear to god Hannibal if you buy me something expensive for my birthday, I’m shipping you off to Wills house to sleep with the dogs.” They jeered.
Meadow and I exchanged a look. We were sure they would love the gift we’d chosen for them. It took several months of planning to get everything worked out. And I’d already spoken to Frances boss, it was easy to convince him considering how scared he was off me. That spineless bastard.
“I just want the two of you for my birthday, that’s it.”
“Then you shall have us.” I said simply, honestly.
I took their hand in mine, kissing the back of it. They shook their head playfully, grabbing my hand and dragging me away from the kitchen. They dragged me into the bedroom, and to the master bathroom. I raised a brow at them curiously.
“I would like to take a bath.” They said simply.
My face didn’t show it, but I was shocked. They’d never really initiated an intimate moment like this before. But a bath would be lovely. I dropped their hand and walked over to the cabinet, pulling out the supplies. Some lavender Epsom salts to help with their sore muscles, and their favourite bubble bath. I was already dressed for the day, but it was fine if everything was out of order today.
They sat on the edge of the counter, watching me as I prepared the bath. As the bathtub was filling, I walked over to them and slotted myself between their legs.
“You’re in an odd mood today my dear.” I mused.
“Hey, if you don’t like it I can totally stop. I just thought it would be nice. I’m not apposed to touch Hannibal, I’m just hardly ever in the mood and that doesn’t seem fair to you.”
I frowned.
“My love, you know I adore you just the way that you are right? I’m more than content with what we have. I’ve accepted that that just how you are and how you function. I would never ask more from you.” I assured them.
“Well this is me asking.”
They gently reached up to cup my cheek in their hand.
“Do you know how many people would kill to see you naked Dr Lecter?” They teased.
I rolled my eyes.
“I’m serious, you have the body of a god Mon Cher, and I don’t tell you that enough.”
It was strange, in the over a year that I had known them, they never talked like this. Of course, they have Meadow and I compliments and praise almost constantly. But never so suggestively. But now wasn’t the time to psychoanalyse them. The thing about being partners is trusting in them, hoping that everything they say is truthful.
“I have to say, I wouldn’t mind hearing that more often.” I grinned.
“I love you Hannibal, all you you.”
They gave me a chaste kiss on the lips. Something they usually only did in moments of high emotion.
“I love you too Frances.”
I gently helped them hop down from the counter. As much as I would want to, I let them be in charge of every movement. I didn’t want to push them too far, encourage them to do something they’d be uncomfortable with.
“We’ll are you just going to stand there, or do I have to undress myself?”
The beamed up at me with their pretty eyelashes batting.
“Oh, yes, it seems I’ve forgotten my manners.”
Frances was also simple in their night clothes. Wearing what seemed to be old dance competition t-shirts and loose shorts. They always wore they’re glasses the first part of the morning, hating having to put in contacts just so they could see. I took their glasses off first, placing them gently on the counter.
“You know you could wear those all the time, they look nice on you.”
“Ahh yes, my little librarian glasses make me look so good.” They said sarcastically.
“I think they make you look astute and ravishing.”
They held their hands up so I could help them slip out of their shirt. And they removed their shorts themself.
“Hannibal, Darling, you’re wearing too many clothes to get into the bath.”
I hadn’t expected them to want me to get in the tub with them. I was simply going to roll up my sleeves and help them bathe.
“That’s the second time I’ve been told that today.”
“Can you blame us?”
It was nice seeing them so shamelessly flirty for once. It was almost like they were trying to run away from themself. Like they were afraid of allow themselves to intimate. A carefully calculated discipline to never allow themselves too much, like they were afraid they would lose it, lose control perhaps.
“Hey, what did I say about thinking mister? I’m trying to be present and I’d appreciate it if you could match my energy.” They laughed slightly.
I just gave them a nod, not choosing to utter another apology. They hated it when I over apologised for things. And they didn’t seem truly upset. I began unbuttoning my shirt, carefully folding each article of clothing and placing it next to the sink. They walked around me, hugging me from behind and nuzzling their face into my neck.
“It’s my birthday darling, nothing is going to go wrong. Everything will be perfect, so stop worrying. I’ll love whatever the two of you have planned for me.”
They grabbed my hand again and I helped them up over the edge of the tub, before sliding in behind them. They sat on my lap and I traced my hands over the myriad of scars on their body. They had far too many for my liking.
“Do they still hurt?” I questioned.
“Only sometimes. When it’s cold.” They said softly.
I hummed, reaching for the little bucket at the edge of the tub to soak their hair. They’re hair was hard to manage, required more maintenance then Meadow or my own. But it was well worth the effort. They relaxed into my touch as I scrubbed their scalp, massaging it gently. I had to admit, this was quite a lovely way to spend the morning. Sure I would have preferred to cook breakfast for the loves of my life. But if there was one thing they were teaching me, it was to be more comfortable with going with the flow.
I put the condition in their hair, and spun their hair in little coils around my finger.
“You’re really good at that.” They said, leaning back to smile up at me.
“I try to be good at everything I do.” I said honestly.
“We know, we can tell. It’s appreciated.”
“Have you ever considered cut your hair?” I asked.
“I suppose now that I don’t have to adhere to a specific dress code, that could be an option. But I’ve never really had short hair before, I wouldn’t know the first thing on how to style it.” They laughed airily.
“We could explore it together if you wish. Meadow was showing me this website, I believe it called Pinterest.”
“Oh, I love Pinterest, I have two accounts.”
“Why two?”
“One for personal, one for daydreaming I guess. You know, you’re typical dream house, car, life. It’s like planning out a mini life in my head that I can escape to if need be.”
I hummed thoughtfully. That was a good thing for them to have. They certainly didn’t live an easy life, though I did everything in my power to make it easier on them. Moving them into my home, getting them a safer car. I would do anything got Meadow and Frances, and I believe they would do the same for me. They already have, they knew everything. All my secrets, all my sins, and they didn’t run.
“So what do you want to do with the rest of your pre-birthday day?”
“We’ll I will be gone most of it, rehearsals before the show and all that. But the morning is all our. Meadow should be back with pastries soon, and Hopfully coffee. Lord knows I need the caffeine.”
I laughed.
“But perhaps you could read to us, I think that would be lovely.”
“Any book in mind?”
“I’m afraid my mind has been clouded with thoughts of Dorian Gray all week. It’s one of my favourites.”
“Oscar Wilde is quite a brilliant writer isn’t he?”
They hummed in response, just enjoying the warmth of the bath water. I warned them before rinsing their hair, so they wouldn’t be startled. I got out of the tub first, wrapping a towel around my waste. It was endearing to see how they whined at the lack of body heat, the heat they were usually so content without.
I helped them out of the tub and quickly wrapped their body in a warm blanket. They tended to get cold rather quickly. I then helped their fry their hair, plopping the towel how they taught me, and retrieving their bonnet from the drawer. It helped their curls to stay more sharply and less frizzy.
I already had my outfit chosen for the day, so it was quick to get ready once more. They followed me into the walk in closet, and I picked out a few options. Meadow was wearing purple today, and I had picked my tie to match.
“Would you like to match with us, My Dear?”
“What sort of question is that, Hannibal? You already know the answer.”
I chuckled. I pulled out a purple blazer, pairing it with a black button up and black dress pants. I went to reach for the accessories draw but I stopped.
“I suppose you won’t be wanting your gift, since you told me not to get you anything expensive.” I teased.
They sighed, rolling their eyes.
“Well I suppose if it’s already in the house-“
I smiled, taking the jewellery box out of the drawer and handing it to them. They gently placed it on the counter top, and began to get dress first. I guess it made more sense to open gifts when wearing clothes. Then they turned their attention back to the box.
“Don’t you dare tell me how much this costs, I don’t want to know.”
I raised my hands in mock defence.
“Just open it please.” I said softly.
They slowly opened it, and the look on their face was well worth any money I had spent. They clasped a shaky hand over their mouth and brought their eyes up to meet mine.
“How did you?”
“You mentioned that you were quite sad when you lost the old one. I gave your grandmothers photo to a jewellery and had them recreate it the best the could.”
“Hannibal I-“
I quickly brought them into a hug, seeing their small for shaking. I was expecting tears so I was prepared for them. I shushed them lightning, trailing my hands up and down their back.
“You don’t have to thank me Darling, it was no big deal.”
“But this is the biggest deal. Han, nobodies ever done something this thoughtful for me. What did I do to deserve you?”
They leaned back into the hug. I gently picked them up, setting them down on the bed. They giggled lightly, the sound floating throughout the room in an echo.
“Will you let me put it on you?”
“Of course, no one else deserves the honours.”
I sat behind them on the bed, gently bringing the pendant around and clasping it behind their neck. They touched it lightly with their fingers before turning to look back at me.
“Thank you. Truly Hannibal this is the best gift anyone has ever given me. I will cherish it always.”
“You are very welcome my beautiful Frances.”
We both turned out head as we heard the door open.
“Oh, sorry, we’re you having a moment?” Meadow asked awkwardly.
“You may join our moment my love, I want you here with us.”
Meadow didn’t need to be told twice and quickly made her way into our bedroom.
“You look handsome in that outfit.” Meadow complimented them.
“I do don’t I?” They laughed once more.
Their laugh seemed particularly contagious today. More joyous than usual. Meadow held up two take out boxes. “Coffee cake or raspberry Danish?”
Frances pretended to think about it. “Well I am the birthday human, can’t I have both?”
Meadow chuckled shaking her head.
“I figured you’d say that. And don’t worry Hannibal, I got something healthy for you. They were selling tofu scramble at the vegan place next door. I know it’s not your favourite but-“
“Thank you Meadow.”
“It’s got a lot of protein.” She offered.
“As much as I love breaking the rules today, eating in the bedroom is not one I’m willing to compromise on.” I shooed them out into the dinning room.
“So, what’s this surprise show about?” Meadow asked.
“Well, that would ruin the point of it being a surprise now wouldn’t it?”
“I’m sure it will be entertaining.” I mused.
“Oh, you just wait, you’re gonna love it!” The grinned wildly.
The rest of breakfast was pretty uneventful. Meadow wanted to be there when we presented the plane tickets. So we decided upon waiting until dinner to give them their other present. I dropped them off at the theatre, considering they would be much to tired to drive home later.
“The show starts at 5, correct?”
“Yes, I have the front seats blocked off for the both of you.”
“Shall I get you flowers?”
“That would be just like old times, I would love that. Surprise me with the type.”
“I love you Frances.”
“And I love you Hannibal.”
Frances’ POV:
Rehearsals went great. It was so nice to be back on the stage again, working with so many amazing and talented people. This dance style wasn’t the usual type I was used to. My professional ballet days unfortunately over. But even if my body did ache more than normal, it was worth it.
But my new just was fulfilling too. Soon enough I’d be presenting my students on stage and cheering them on from the wings. The show case at the end of the year would be amazing. I had spent nearly an hour in hair and makeup. All Hannibal’s hard work from earlier seemed useless, but it was still well appreciated. My hair would be pulled into a tight bun at the back of my head, that I could keep looking neat for a few days. I had to wear a wig with this costume.
I peaked past the wings when I noticed people start pouring in. I saw Hannibal standing up from with a bouquet of flowers, and Meadow excitedly looking around by his side. Of course they were early, I grinned, early was the only time Hannibal spoke. Punctual looked good on him. The announcer came on stage to introduce the show.
“Laddies and gentlemen, I would like to welcome the New York dance company, and our special guess Frances Darling, who so graciously agreed to save out show, in tonight performance of Burlesque. Applause is welcome and encouraged to cheer on tonight performers. Please, enjoy the show!”
There were a few performances before mine, which were fantastic. I was in awe watching everyone do their thing. It wasn’t a style I excelled in, but it was fun to watch and learn new techniques. One of my old friends from the company met me behind the curtain.
“You ready?”
I nodded. “My fiancés are in the audience, they haven’t seen me preform since-“
“Hey, as far as I know, what happened wasn’t your fault. It’s stupid for people to blame you for those deaths, simply excuse you were the sole survivor. Did you say, fiancés? Congratulations.”
“Yeah, I have no idea how I managed to snag the two of them. It’s entirely a mystery.” I laughed, trying to shake my nerves.
“Well, then you better put on a good show for them tonight. You’re going to do amazing Frances, knock ‘em dead.”
“Thanks Chip.”
He laughed at the ancient nickname. We’d gotten them way back when we were children. When I first moved to America. I was Chocolate, and he was Chip. Of course, it bothered me when I first got there. The two of us being the only people of colour in the company. But when used between just us, it was lighthearted and friendly. It felt natural.
“Oh and Happy Birthday!”
“You remembered?”
“I still pick up cookies every year on your birthday, no matter where I travel.” He admitted.
“Perhaps if your still in town tomorrow evening you can come to my birthday.”
“Are you sure? I wouldn’t want to intrude.”
“Nonsense, it’s my party, my guest list. I’ll send you the address. Then you can meet my fiancés.”
Before he could answer I was given my cue to go on stage. But I’d find him after the show.
I kept my eyes on them whenever I could. Gauging their reactions. Meadow had this goofy, adoring smile on her pretty face. And Hannibal seemed totally entranced. This might actually go down in history as my best birthday ever. The crowed roared with applause when I finished. Only a few more group acts and we’d be done!
“You were amazing!” Chip praised.
I did a little curtesy.
“Thank you, thank you! I try!”
“About the party, I’ll be there. Here’s my new phone number so we don’t loose touch again.”
I smiled wildly.
“Excellent, I let Hannibal know to make extra food so you can have some for your flight home.”
“Hannibal, that’s quite an old fashioned name.” He pointed out.
“He’s kinda an old fashioned guy.”
“Can’t wait to meet him, and your other fiancé?”
“Meadow, she’s absolutely lovely. She was my best friend for the past five years. It just seemed to be the natural progression of the relationship.”
“Look at your pulling the girls and the guys. Is there anything you can’t do?”
“I think we both know the answer to the question.”
He cringed.
“Still haven’t learned how to cook?”
“We have several fire extinguishers in the kitchen and dining room.” I laughed.
We both went back on stage to do the final bows. And I was quick to shed my costume and run out to the audience. I practically the myself into one of Meadow’s hugs.
“So, what did you think?” I asked.
“I think you broke out dear Doctor.” Meadow whispered, kissing the top of my head.
“Hannibal?” I tried.
“You were amazing, you’re always amazing.” He said, finally turning to look at me.
I giggled quietly.
“Didn’t know I had that in me, did you?”
“No, My Dear, you seemed to be full of pleasant surprises today.”
I couldn’t hold back the yawn that escaped my mouth.
“I think we should get them home.” Meadow laughed.
“Indexed, these are for you, Cala Lilies.”
“They’re beautiful Hannibal, thank you.”
I wasn’t sure if my actual birthday could top tonight. But I was excited to see Will and Alana and share my birthday with them as well.

I’m laughing my ass off rn. So Hannibal knows Frances can dance obviously, but he’s only seen them in like serious Ballet mood, or like ballroom dancing with them.
But I keep imagining they somehow get invited to like a party party (not one of Hannibal’s fancy get togethers) and he loses track of them. Only to find them in the centre of the dance floor with people circling around them just going to fucking town. 😂
I feel like he’s both amused and horrified and Meadow is just like “yeah! That one’s ours!” And so proud about it 😂 I’m assuming their both very drunk in this situation, Hannibal is the DD.
