Francis Guy’s Winter Scene (circa 1819–1820) was based on the view outside of the artist’s second-story studio on Front Street in Brooklyn. The painting is now about two feet narrower due to an 1881 fire at the Brooklyn Institute (the Brooklyn Museum’s forerunner) which badly damaged the work. The original composition, known today through period prints and photographs, featured additional buildings and figures on the left. One of these now missing buildings was the home of Augustus Graham, a founder of the Brooklyn Institute.

In his will, Graham—whose depiction in the painting was also lost—left a bequest to the Institute. Part of it went toward establishing a fund for acquiring works by living artists in the United States. The bequest was highly progressive—the Institute was the only organization of its kind to commission works from living artists in order to build a permanent collection. Due to Graham’s generosity and foresight, the Brooklyn Museum now holds one of the oldest and finest public collections of American art.
