I HAVE BEEN ENABLED!!! 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
He and Robby meet up for a beer first and Whitaker thinks: why do you need to paying people?
Robby's relaxed. Good looking. Great career. Funny. The edges of his eyes crinkle when he smiles. He's also clearly wildly uncomfortable with the payment side of things - the "sugar" part of their future arrangement. But they have a stilted conversation about it and agree to a number before Whitaker comes back to Robby's place.
He doesn't think anything of sinking to his knees to blow Robby for the first time. He's hot and cool. Plus he's already an MD which makes Whitaker like him even more.
Whitaker's not in Pittsburgh often. Only when he's visiting his aunt. His car's not very reliable and it's always a hope and a prayer that gets him from Case Western down to Michael's apartment.
But even so Robby texts him at least once a month to meet up.
They start small. Whitaker doesn't think anything of it. He's a med student. Robby's established. That's how these things work, he thinks.
Robby vastly prefers to pay for things and not Whitaker directly. Once Dennis cracks the code it makes everything so much more enjoyable between them.
Robby buys his textbooks. And sometimes his groceries. Always his rent on the fifteenth of the month. His very last semester in med school Robby offers to pay his tuition.
"Congratulations," he says roughly by way of explanation. He's laying in bed underneath his plush down comforter. They've just had sex and Whitaker's chest still heaves from the exertion of it.
"Thanks," Whitaker says. "That would be great."
Robby pays Case Western directly.
Interviews are coming up and Whitaker's a bit embarrassed to tell Robby he's considering EM. No, not considering -- he's decided on it. But somehow Robby pulls it out of him and Whitaker's a blushing mess whenever he brings it up.
But Robby doesn't tease about it. In fact - he seems almost put off by it.
"I hope I didn't have anything to do with it," Robby says and it makes Whitaker shake his head furiously and assure him: no.
Whitaker's not stupid. He knows how this ends. Eventually Robby gets tired of him and finds another twenty-something to bang. He's not fooling himself into thinking this is any more serious than it is. Even though they've been seeing each other monthly for over a year. Robby's still probably seeing other people. Whitaker's not, but that's because he's busy with school.
Eventually Robby cracks and helps Whitaker set up a list of target programs. PTMH is on Robby's list. Whitaker has to tell him he doesn't think he has the grades for it.
"You'll get an interview for sure," Robby says and adds Presby too.
The night before his Presby and PTMH interview Robby sets Whitaker up with a scary looking old man with a maroon Carhart jacket and piercing gaze.
"Why do you want to be in medicine?" Abbot barks at him.
Whitaker's terrified but answers.
"Why should we choose you?" Abbot continues as he orders another beer. He's piercing Whitaker's ribcage with his eyes like he can flay him open and see everything inside him. "What makes you so special?"
Abbot grills him for two and a half hours and by the end Whitaker's on the verge of a nervous breakdown but Abbot just tosses a peanut in the air and catches it with his mouth.
Both Robby and Abbot recuse themselves from Whitaker's PTMH interview so a tall guy named Langdon sits across from him in a conference room and peppers him with the same questions Abbot asked him.
Except he also wants to know: "How do you know Robby?"
"Oh, uh, he's a mentor," Whitaker says.
Langdon accepts this answer. "What about Abbot?"
Whitaker suspects Robby and Abbot are exes. Or just very good friends.
Whitaker shrugs. He thinks about it. "I'm not sure, actually," he says honestly.
Langdon's eyes meet his. A question is there. "I'll ask Abbot then," he says.
Later, after the interview's over Langdon takes him around the floor and introduces him to the older residents and nurses. Whitaker spies a cup of red rooibos tea sitting on the nurse's station. That means Robby's around somewhere even though he promised Whitaker he wouldn't be on shift when his interview was happening.
"Abbot recused himself too," Langdon said to the charge nurse. "It's interesting, don't you think?"
"I don't think it's that interesting," Whitaker says. He mentally ticks off the number of times he's seen Robby recently - it's not often. He's been busy studying.
"It could be," Langdon says. "It could be, though."
The day Whitaker has to rank his match preferences Robby keeps texting him about different programs and wants to know when it's due.
Twelve noon, Whitaker tells him.
He's stuck on his top choices. He knows intellectually he shouldn't rank PTMH high even though it's an excellent program. Robby runs it. It's a conflict of interest.
But he remembers how he felt there, touring the floor. He remember's Robby's tea and how it made the anxiety in his chest relax. He knows that the older man will either pay for his apartment or let him live with him if he selects any of the Pittsburgh placements. He's dropped enough hints about it.
He finalizes his ranks. PTMH is third. Behind Johns Hopkins and NYU both of which he'll never get.
Right before he hits submit he flips it: PTMH number one. Done.
Five minutes later Robby texts him: Where are we on your list?
Whitaker's not sure what to respond. He'll be totally humiliated if they don't offer him a spot. In theory Robby's got nothing to do with his decision. He's recused from the process.
His parents fly down for match day and when he opens his envelope Whitaker's whole chest explodes when he sees his first choice. He wants to whoop for joy and call Robby.
But then he remembers Robby will already know. He's probably seen the final list. Approved it, the final step in the process.
He settles on a quick text to Robby when he and his parents wrap up dinner:
Looks like I'll be around Pittsburgh. Want to meet up?
He puts his phone face down on the table. It buzzes. He already knows Robby's response.
