The Mist (2007) dir. Frank Darabont
IM SO PASSIONATE ABT THIS OVERLOOKED PIECE OF BYLER PROOF!!! i know we dont need any more proof but pls humor me 🙏
the fact that frank darabont is coming out of an ELEVEN YEAR retirement to direct two episodes of s5 because he says this series has HEART.
he has such a short list of movies compared to other big name directors because he's INCREDIBLY picky about storytelling and taking projects for the soul and meaning of it rather than for the money. this dude is no sellout.
hes fought for his work to be remembered as something that will thoroughly MOVE YOU. he directed one of the best movies ever made (shawkshank redemption) and loved stranger things so much that he asked to be a part of what's going to be a monumentally impactful, meaningful piece of media that will be an honor to have his name attached to. he doesnt do anything less.
his work is highly political. he talked about ~times like these~ in his masterclass and how his political rage drove him to make a monster movie (the mist)
this clip summarizes what he stands for beautifully
so to come out of a decade long retirement because he feels so passionately about being a part of MAKING A STATEMENT in a time of tension and political turmoil.. because he values heart and soul and humanity.. this season is not going to flop. this dude either goes big or goes home. which means byler endgame 😇
and if there's one thing to expect from darabont it's a complex, rich, and powerful depiction of despair and turmoil 🙃 truly i am so excited.
THE MIST (2007)

Part ➡️ The Arrowhead Project
A new recurring clue has emerged on Netflix Puzzled --
Arrowhead, Arrow... it's come up a few times now. At first I was like ???, but after a simple Google search, I think I know what the clue refers to: The Arrowhead Project from Stephen King's The Mist (the film adaptation was directed by none other than Frank Darabont!)
Here is said insignia, which is not too dissimilar to Lucas in Will's painting 👀 While I have my suspicions about Lucas' role in the Orange Agenda™️, I don't know if there's something deeper to this, or if it's simply an Easter Egg. Also note the lighting bolt #signalgate
Tbh I have this Reddit post to thank for connecting Project Arrowhead to ST:
This is not the first time folks in the ST fandom have made the comparison either -- this Reddit post compares the end of S4 to The Mist as well:
I think they may not be wrong -- lots of fans were bothered by the way Hawkins was relatively chill at the top of S5, subverting audience expectations for what was seemingly promised at the end of S4 (and in ST5 promo) -- a hellscape for our Party to navigate. But what if we actually *do* get that version of Hawkins in Vol. 4?
What if, when our people finally wake up (and that's gonna be another #Bobgate post eventually, trust), this is exactly what they find?
Going back to Project Arrowhead:
This all sounds very familiar -- the night of Will's disappearance, we learn, is when the Mothergate was first opened by El and the first demogorgon gets through.
The Storm sounds very similar to the power outages happening in Hawkins that night (which we learn about through Ted's frustrations with the TV signal, the lights flickering at the Wheelers' house, and the news report at Hopper's the next morning) #flickergate --
However, I have a feeling that not only will we be getting "the Mist", but the flood of creatures to go with it.
I had been wracking my brains to figure out what the hell this meant. Brown has also been a prominent color in the Starstruck puzzles, but I never could connect it to anything related to the symbolism we've decoded so far.
Here we see green vs. orange locked in battle. On Team Green is El's purple, Will's yellow, and Mike's blue -- while Team Orange on the other side has a ton of brown with MF red and some grey (what might this be??? The traitors?)
I think now I know what exactly the "pale brown mist" might be referring to.
Do we know when this cue played on ST5 (if it did)? It's so eerie and maybe it'll come into play in Vol. 4.
Now, for those who don't know the plot of The Mist --
A supermarket, you say? [once again, I'm directing people to check out @walkablepurse50's Fly or die Buy? post]
And themes re: religious fanaticism? #churchgate remains in the chat (+ all those folks who were like "why don't people view Will Byers as the AntiChrist after the Satanic Panic in S4?" might be right on the money)
Not to mention Dark of the Moon, the play within the play The First Shadow, also has those themes.
Whether the Party will have a supermarket battle or some angry churchgoers to deal with remains to be seen, but here's one more detail from The Mist movie you'll be interested in:
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! The dragon looks just like Will's painting too.
FYI, this is the patch for the military response team dispatched to stop the creatures and save the town at the end of the movie.
Looks familiar, doesn't it?
Our "Hellfire team" on ST has been know to use firepower to fight Vecna and the hive mind, but I suspect they'll learn they CAN'T fight with fire if they want to win when the real finale comes around.
What can you say? When you're given a pointer, you follow the arrow ➡️
He also wrote ‘Dreamscape’ and helmed ‘Eraser,’ ‘Bless This Child’ and ‘The Scorpion King.’
Remembering Chuck Russell 1958-2026
Director Chuck Russell has died at 74. After working in film crew for a few years, he made his directorial debut with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, which he co-wrote with Wes Craven, Frank Darabont and Bruce Wagner. That wasn't just the best ANOES sequel, it was easily one of the best sequels of all-time. The cast even featured Patricia Arquette and Lawrence Fishburne. Other films he directed included The Mask, one of Jim Carrey's best movies of that era.
