The Baum Bugle, 1959 Anniversary Issue.
Okay now that Tumblr is into Oz thanks to the lesbian movies I have somewhere to drop my analysis.
How come in the 100 plus years this book has existed nobody brings up the Tin Man/Tin Woodman being very explicitly coded to have some sort of empathy disorder or even sociopathy where he does not have his emotions to guide him so must make a conscious effort to be a "good person" and he constantly worries about his disorder (symbolized by him not having a heart) making him inherently evil
ok so… food for thought the original Frank. L. Baum “Oz” books from 1900-1920 , I believe the most used word is queer!
then came “The Wizard of Oz” in 1936 which due to it having Judy Garland as its star and inherently gay themes became a “gay cult classic”
Aaa then along came Gregory Maguire “Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” GAY. GAY. HOMOSEXUAL. GAY. Literally!!! Gregory Maguire is not only gay himself but Elphie and Glinda canonically kiss, there are two gay men who it is implied one of them dies from aids, Elphaba is heavily implied to be intersex, Elphie and Glinda sleep together (it can be like that…) and MORE.
(Don’t read without being sure what ur getting into this is not just gay fluff…)
Then the Wicked The Musical music by Stephen Schwartz based of Gregory Maguire’s book
1. “WHAT IS THIS FEELING” “my pulse is rushing ,my head is reeling, my face is flushing.” Part of that is directly from the book…
2. DEFYING GRAVITY when she sings “kiss me goodbye” that is when she is saying goodbye to Glinda in the books and does. actually. kiss. her goodbye!
3. FOR GOOD “like a stream that meets a bolder” directly from the book, same with “the good witch had been changed for good”
4. Idina Menzel also had a lgbtq+ following due to her past parts Maureen in Rent and would go on to play Elsa who has a who fandom of head canons of her own. Not to mention the Elphabas who came after her also went on to play queer roles.
5. There are a few Elphaba and Glinda pairs on broadway who end ended up dating some even getting married!
Finally WICKED THE MOVIE… well this is a doozie the thing about movies is that they have press tours… and the thing about wicked is they have Yuriana Grande and when she and Cynthia Yurivo are together it’s yuriotic! I’ll stop I’ll stop!!! 😂😂😂
THE POINT IS! “The Wizard of Oz” is a fanfic of Frank. L. Baum’s Oz books and Gregory Maguire’s “Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” is the gayest fanfic (I mean it legit could have been found on ao3…) written by a f-ing gay man… we sure ao3 didn’t exist…. then Wicked the Musical was just a fanfic of Gregory Maguire’s book. So the movie is just John. M. Chu, the editing team, STILL Stephen Schwartz, and the cast especially Ariana and Cynthia making this movie just another increasingly gay fanfic. 😂
Tonight's double feature.
Oz The Great & Powerful is a pretty good prequel but it has some problems.
My biggest issue is that Annie (Oz's love interest in the mundane world) seems to become Dorothy's mother. At least that's the assumption I make when she says John Gale proposed marriage.
Seems like a pretty big coincidence that Oz would be so intricately intertwined with the Gale family from the start. Not sure if that was in the books or just a change for the movie.
Anyway, I can overlook it. Still a good story!
Christians are so easily triggered that it's no longer fun any more. I feel so sorry for the all the little kids who won't be able to watch the new Wicked movie or even read the original Oz books by Frank L. Baum due to the hatred this Christ-bitch is spewing from her thin, ascetic lips. I'm so grateful that, even though I was raised Christian, I was still allowed to watch the Wizard Of Oz every Thanksgiving because my mom, for all her faults, was at that time still able to distinguish between fact and fiction.
Frank L. Baum was one of the greatest children's authors in history. In my opinion he's right up there with Hans Christian Anderson, Astrid Lindgren, and J. K. Rowling. His stories so enriched my own childhood that when I imagine any child being deprived of them I feel a rage that seems to be out of all proportion to the cause.
Perhaps it is because this small deprivation that some children will suffer is but one more symptom of the mental illness that is the Christian faith. Christians, as a rule, just say no to life and all that makes life worth living. The Christian God is, in Goethe's immortal words, "the spirit that denies". Goethe put those words into the mouth of Mephistopheles, but I believe they suit Christ so much better. Is it not the Christians who declare, along with Goethe's Mephistopheles, that "everything that arises deserves to perish" because, as their Saint Paul so succinctly phrased it, "the wages of sin is death" and that "all die because all have sinned"?
Watching or reading anything associated with Oz is just one more thing that makes life worth living which Christian kids will no longer be able to enjoy. Fuck God and his bastard son Jesus Christ!
Hearts will never be practical until they can be made unbreakable.
