had the urge to rewatch the scene where The Creature explains to his friend what he remembers. That scene starts with the blind man telling The Creature to get a specific book "last book on the left"

to find this book, the Creature;

goes to a specific book on the shelf, points at it

turns his hand to point left

and THEN goes left and retrieves Paradise Lost

this could mean two things, and they aren't mutually exclusive;

The Creature doesn't know right from left so has created a ritual that helps him orient himself

and/or this is how the Blind Man figured out how to find specific books on his shelf, starting with a certain spine that is distinct enough in shape he can't mistake it for another, and he uses that as his anchor bc now he knows which books are where based on their location relevant to anchor!book.

To find Paradise Lost himself, the blind man probably wouldn't need to use this method, he'd just find the left corner of the shelf and use that as his anchor, bc it means the book is Right There. However the Creature has adopted the ritual, and can now find books if instructed, bc he knows that the side with the most books, excluding the anchor, is left, and the one with like three books is right

This is brilliant, I need to know who decided this and if it was Jacob going the extra mile, bc he REALLY went the extra mile to give the Creature more depth and this is a GREAT way to show he's learned how to verify an assumption (which is right and which is left) in a way that may not be conventional but Works for him and has a near 100% success rate
