"Try Cult Leader: COURT HEARS ASSAULT CASE," The Province (Vancouver). October 6, 1943. Page 3. ---- The trial has opened in Assize Court of Frederick Hathaway, 42, leader of the Aryan Astrological Occult Church of Christ, at 2763 Oak, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of indecently assaulting a woman adherent of the cult.

Mrs. Easter Lillian Purvis, 2446 West Fourth, testified that she attended a lecture given by the accused on April 7, when he talked on the pyramids of Egypt. A week later she attended the hall again when he lectured on cosmic science, and asked her to stay after the lecture because he wished to work out her astrological chart, according to her evidence.

HAD TEA TOGETHER. They had tea together in the prayer room where incense burned on the altar. The incense, she claimed, was over-powering. The witness stated that the accused told her his spiritual name was Jair the Third, which the masters in the occult world had given him.

She added that he talked of the love aspects of cosmic science, and explained that the masters of the occult world had given him a sign that she had been sent to him.

She claimed that he tried to kiss her. She said she resisted, and broke from his embrace, and told him it was a "beastly thing to do under the guise of religion."

Mrs. Purvis said that she ran out of the building and at the first opportunity reported the incident to Inspector A. S. Rae, city police morality department.

OBTAINED DIVORCE. Cross-examined by G. V. Pelton, council for the defense, the witness said she obtained a divorce in Saskatoon and subsequently married Thomas L. Purvis, C.P.R. Express messenger, on December 11, 1939. In the following May her husband obtained a divorce from her, but on August 7 they were remarried in Calgary and are now living together.

Dugald Donaghy, K.C., is crown cousel.

The trial is proceeding before Chief Justice Farris and a jury of nine men and three women.

Page 15. --- Frederick Hathaway, 42, leader of the Aryan Astrological Occult Church of Christ at 2763 Oak, was found guilty in Assize Court on Wednesday evening of an in- decent assault on a woman adherent of the cult.

Mrs. Easter Lillian Purvis, 2446 West Fourth, complained that the accused made advances to her in the prayer room of the church.

Chief Justice Farris remanded Hathaway to the end of the assizes for sentence.

Flights to Venus, Mars and other planets were described by Hathaway.

TALL TREES. Trees on Venus were a thousand feet high and were as thick as Granville street, with no bark, Hathaway told Dugald Donaghy, K.C., crown prosecutor. The people on Venus were two feet high.

The trees on Mars were small, he stated, no more than 25 feet tall. The planet was peopled by red men and green men, who were four feet high. He found the inhabitants of Mars hostile; but the people of Venus were very friendly, although he did not know their language.

The accused added that he had also visited Saturn and Neptune.

"OCCULT CHORD." "Very interesting," commented Mr. Donaghy.

Hathaway explained that any one could accompany him to another plane by development of the occult chord, which he said is a nerve of the brain, and this was strengthened by meditation and prayer.

The accused stated that he issued pamphlets under authority of the Masters of the Great White Lodge, whom he defined as spiritual beings, angels, or guides. He signed the pamphlets as Jair the Third, a spiritual name given him by the masters, he said.

He thought he was a reincarnation of another human being, whom Mr. Donaghy suggested must have been Jair the First. "The whole thing is mythical," declared Mr. Donaghy.

MET 20 MASTERS Hathaway insisted that he had communicated with and seen 20 masters of the Great White Lodge.

The accused said he holds the degree of doctor of philosophy and cosmic science from Lahore University, India. He has never been there and he did not pay for the degree, he said.

He lectured on philosophy, cosmic science and astrology in the church hall at 2763 Oak, which used to be two stores, incense was burned regularly at the meetings, he explained. The teachings were similar to the Theosophists and Rosicrucians, he declared.

DENIES CHARGE. Hathaway denied making any advances to Mrs. Purvis and said that he thought at first she was a sincere seeker for truth but later suspected that she was an investigator, who had been sent to spy on him, because he had many enemies.

"There was nothing between you at all, just a discussion of the cosmetic," commented Chief Justice Farris.

G. V. Pelton, Hathaway's counsel, objected. The discussion was not about cosmetic, but about the cosmic, he said.

James A. Acheson, private investigator, testified that he accompanied Mrs. Purvis to Inspector A. S. Rae of the city police on the day prior to that on which she claimed to have been attacked, and that Mrs.

Purvis told him she was investigating Hathaway. Four adherents of Hathaway's church gave him an excellent character.

"Visited Venus, Too: 'Man of Mars' Guilty Of Attack on Woman," Vancouver Sun. October 7, 1943. Page 1. --- Vancouver's "man from Mars," Frederick Hathaway, came to earth with a thud Wednesday night when he heard a jury of nine men and three women convict him of indecent assault.

The 43-year-old lecturer, who calls himself doctor of philosophy and cosmic science by virtue of a correspondence degree from the "University of Lahore" in India and terms himself "Jair III," was remanded by Chief Justice Wendell Farris for sentence at the end of the Assizes.

From the witness box, Hathaway told of visits to other planets - spiritually, of course.

He denied vehemently that he told Mrs. Lillian Purvis, 2446 West Fourth, that she should have intimate relations with him in order to get to another plane; that they could go there together but that she could not go alone.

He said he took Mrs. Purvis to be an honest seeker after truth and enlightenment and she aroused no feeling of affection in him.

Before the encounter was over, however, he suspected that she was an investigator.

HOROSCOPE WENT BLOOEY Mrs. Purvis had testified earlier in the trial that Hathaway invited her to remain after the second lecture she attended April 14 in his Aryan Astrological Occult Church of Christ, 2700 block Oak, and that he attempted to force attentions on her which he claimed would advance her in cosmic science.

She said she managed to break away, telling him it was a beastly thing to do under the guise of religion, and left with Hathaway apologizing and begging her to come to another lecture.

After his arrest, according to Inspector A. S. Rae and Detective William Harrington, the accused admitted asking Mrs. Purvis to stay and he would read her horoscope but that "in the middle of the scene she changed her mind and ran out of the hall, calling him names," that he apologized and wanted to drive her home.

There are many masters of the Great White Lodge, including Christ, and he has seen about 20 of them, Hathaway told Prosecutor Dugald Donaghy, KC.

"That's all, Doctor Hathaway," replied Mr. Donaghy.

The Chief Justice then asked the accused what kind of a doctor he was and Hathaway said philosophy and cosmic science, producing what he said was a degree obtained by correspondence from the University of Lahore in India.

"I did not pay anything for it. Just like a lawyer getting a KC," he explained.

"WONDERFUL WORLD" "Wonderful world, isn't it," remarked the prosecutor and the accused agreed that it is.

Miss Sarah Mary Ann Springer held the Bible between her two hands as she took the oath and swore that the accused was a Godly man and had never mentioned sex during the four years she had attended his classes.

Three other AAOCC followers were called as character witnesses by G. V. Pelton, at whose request the trial was open to the public.

"It takes courage for a woman to report to the authorities that she has been attacked by a man," Mr. Donaghy told the jury as he reviewed the evidence of Mrs. Purvis.

The jury retired at 7:20 p.m., after a 55-minute charge by the Chief Justice, and they returned at 9:30 with a verdict of guilty, less than five minutes after they had read to them the evidence of Detective Harrington.

"Trial in Alleged Bond Conspiracy Delayed,” Montreal Star. November 10, 1932. Page 3. ---- George Bellefleur is Refused Plea For Bail --- The trial of George Bellefleur, alleged to have conspired with James Carson, alias ‘Father James Calahan,’ to steal $41,000 worth of bonds from a Toronto bond company was opened this morning and after the hearing of evidence and one witness, adjourned until November 17.

George Nightingale, attached to the Toronto office of the company, told the court that Bellefleur had approached him on October 30 with a request to be appointed an agent, claiming that he had a client ready to buy $40,000 worth nf bonds. An agreement was reached. Later he was advised by telegram to have the bonds ready for delivery to the Montreal office to “Rev. Father James Calahan, 251 Dalhousie street, Ottawa." When Canon appeared to take the bonds, he was arrested and Bellefleur was taken into custody shortly afterward.

An application for bail was refused.

“Brothers Sentenced After Guilty Pleas,” Toronto Globe. June 23, 1931. Page 13. ---- Terrence O’Reilly Sent to Penitentiary, William H. to Guelph ---- Terrence O’Reilly (pictured) was sentenced to five years in the penitentiary, and William H. O’Reilly was sentenced to two years less one day plus one year indeterminate at the Ontario Reformatory by Magistrate Browne in the Police Court. He agreed with some of the demands of the prisoner rioters, but considered his officer supervisors in the hospital to be “real gentlemen...willing and anxious to carry on...officers doing work without fear or favour.”  He thought most other inmates complained because “they did not understand” how the prison worked or why medicine was controlled as it was.  He only disliked the dentist who he thought rather slovenly. With no offences against the rules to his name, and with a full remission docket, he was paroled in September 1933.]

“Remanded for Sentence,” Ottawa Citizen. February 29, 1940. Page 05. ---- BROCKVILLE, Feb. 28. - Frank Carpenter, who was arrested at Hamiton, and Robert S. Jail for Bogus Tickets Sydney Finkelstein and Earl Walker, convicted a week ago of a charge of conspiracy involving the sale of tickets for a concert held in the name of the Canadian Veteran’s Bonus League, were sentenced to three months definite and three months indefinite by Magistrate Gullen today. The sentence was dated back to May 14.

At the trial the court was told the accused men paid the Canadian veterans’ bonus league $100 for the use of their name and then sold tickets throughout the city.

‘This is a bad type of fraud to have been carried on at the present time,’ Crown Counsel J. W. McFadden observed before sentence was passed. ‘In these serious days citizens are inclined to do their best to assist patriotic endeavors, but here the money was just going into the pockets of the accused.’

At the conclusions of the trial Mr. McFadden pointed out that the police held about 20 cheques, not yet cashed, and made out to the league. One of them 10 dollars, he said, bore the signature of Tallulah Bankhead, the famous actress.

Magistrate Gullen ruled that the police should endeavor to return the cheques to the owners. A sum of $3 in cash was ordered turned over to the Canadian legion.
