Whilest crossing the Atlantic Ocean in April 1966, the SS Michelangelo was caught in a big storm. Suddenly she was hit by a 20 meter high wave, which seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. It caused serious damage to the superstructure and killed two passengers and a crew member.

These waves are known as freakwaves and shouldn’t be confused which tsunamis, since they are not the result of underwater earthquackes, but rather of strong winds. Their sudden appearence and height turns them into a real danger to the maritime traffic and many ships, which have mysteriously disappeared, are thought to have been hit by one of these waves.
