Or it was a way to bring the conversation to the point of Isabelle explaining that they weren't related by blood and therefore providing some sort of exposition for the reader. Similar to the way the 'parabatai'-word was introduced later in that conflict scene between Alec and Clary, I'm pretty sure that conversation only happened this way, so Jace could explain that part of the deal afterwards.
