Fred Patten (December 11, 1940 – November 12, 2018)

Fred Patten is one of the most important people in American anime culture because he essentially help start anime fandom.

Throughout the 70s, Patten wrote to Japanese publishers, asking to import their manga. In 1977, he helped found the Cartoon/Fantasy Organization, the first American anime fan club. Toei considered him employee in 1978 because how he helped them promote Japanese media in the West. TMS sent him a personal copy of Castle of Cagliostro in 1980. He helped found Streamline Productions, one of the first official anime distribution companies, with Carl Macek and Jerry Beck. He even had a few face-to-face conversations with Osamu Tezuka himself.

However, he not only helped lay the ground work for the Western anime fandom, but also the furry fandom.

So remember...

Anime fans and furry fans both come from the contributions of the same man.

Some very sad news to share - Writer and longtime pillar of the anime community Fred Patten has passed away. Writer of Watching Anime, Reading Manga, Patten was also one of the founding members of The Cartoon/Fantasy Organization in 1977, which was crucial to the eventual creation of Anime Weekend Atlanta. He was also the first employee of Streamline Pictures, one of the first anime companies to dub uncut anime into English and sell them to fans rather than trying to dumb them down as cartoons for kids. You can read his in depth series from 2015 he wrote for Cartoon Research on Streamline Pictures here, it’s essential for any younger fans who want to know more about the history of anime in the US. He has many other articles on the website that are also great reading as well.

RIP to a fan that helped spread the love of anime and manga when it wasn’t such a common hobby. Without him, things would have been very different.

News of Stan Lee's death got onto the front page of my newspaper, if "below the fold." Mulling over that, even if that also meant remembering how I'd felt intimidated by their already existing continuities when young to the point of taking only the smallest nibbles at Marvel superhero comics and for whatever reason don't watch their steady stream of movies now, lasted me though the day. While I was doing that, though, I picked up on reports of a death that wouldn't reach quite as far but still had me aware of "one thing after another" coincidences. Fred Patten, one of the earliest North American manga and anime fans, had also died. Most of my connection to Patten came from having bought his book Watching Anime, Reading Mangafrom a local comics shop over a decade ago. I happened to say something about that book here just this summer, commenting that beyond its historical tidbits the thought of Patten having kept commenting about anime and manga for three and a half decades to that point was encouraging at a moment when fans much younger than him on some message boards I hadn't quite backed away from yet were exuding impressions of burnout. With that said, beyond reports that Patten had kept going to conventions in a wheelchair I don't quite know what his most recent opinions on "drawn entertainments from Japan" were. That he was also a "furry fan" can provoke a strange thought or two, but I suppose I'm positive about a few things I'm also cautious about certain potential responses to myself.

Aloha Ladies and Gentlefurs!

This Sunday we have the pleasure of having Mr Fred Patten one of the oldest members of the furry fandom with us. W are pre-recording the podcast due to time constraints but we’ve been receiving many questions from some of our fans!

Fred was the official editor of the Rowrbrazzle APA from 1989 to 2005, having joined the APA in 1984. He has also been active in Furthest North Crew and North American Fur, amongst other places.

Fred has been writing furry book reviews since 1962. He was the furry book reviewer for Yarf! (1990-2003), Claw & Quill (2004-2005), Anthro (2005-2008), Renard's Menagerie (2008), Flayrah (2011-present), and "Dogpatch Press" (2014-present) magazines.

Fred was also the founder of the Ursa Major Awards in 2001, and won its award for Best Anthropomorphic Other Literary Work in 2003 for the furry anthology Best In Show. He was inducted in absentia into MiDFur's Furry Hall of Fame in 2011.

Fred was the Fandom Guest of Honor (in absentia) for RainFurrest 2013
