Fred Rosser wanted to be a professional wrestler since he was a teen. He even competed in several backyard wrestling leagues. In college, he dropped out of the football team to focus on his academic studies and professional wrestling.
In February 2010, Fred achieved his dream when he made his debut on WWE’s development program. He was given the stage name Darren Young, playing a character described as a "South Beach Party Boy".
In 2013, Rosser decided to come out of the closet during an interview with TMZ. Rosser is the first professional wrestler to publicly come out while still signed to WWE. Other WWE wrestlers have previously revealed they are gay, but they did so after retiring or were no longer under contract.
Rosser explained why he wanted to come out:
"One of them was having the opportunity to be able to bring my partner backstage into the world of professional wrestling. To be able to walk with him on the red carpet and be happy and be confident… Being the first openly gay WWE Superstar, I now have a duty to instill confidence in our youth and to lead by example."
Afterwards, WWE expressed their support of Rosser, as well as fellow wrestlers such as Bret Hart and Triple H.
Since then, Rosser has been an advocate for LGBT rights.
"By being the first, I've paved the way for other gay athletes to come out and be themselves. Not just gay athletes, but anyone that gets bullied in silence. I speak to kids all over the world about my 'Block Hate' campaign and the damaging effects of bullying. That's where my journey continues now."
Since 2020, Rosser has been under contract with New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he quickly became New Japan STRONG Openweight Champion. He is also a trainer at the NJPW Academy.
