Fred’s Bakery, 2831 Robertson Blvd, Los Angeles (Beverlywood), CA 90034
Fred’s Bakery is a kosher/parve bakery in Beverlywood, an area which had a strong Jewish presence (it looks like that presence is waning). They’ve been open since 1949. Fred’s specializes in challah bread, bagels, cakes, cookies, bread, babka, strudel, danish, scones, French and Eastern Europe pastries. They also have a deli case with salads and lox, sandwiches (made to order), shakshuka, Israeli breakfast, espresso, and drinks. The prices of the baked goods weren’t displayed.
Kalachki ($3.99): Looks like a chocolate crescent roll and it’s the size of a croissant – the kalachki features a heavier denser dough with cream cheese and butter. It’s basically a gigantic rugelach. You get a lot more for your money with the chocolate kalachki vs. the chocolate rugelach. More chocolate, more layers of chocolate and dough. I also detected a hint of orange peel. Enjoyed the crunch from pearl sugar, moist and dense interior, lots of chocolate. It was rich and not super sweet.
Rugelach (6 for $6.27): Sold by weight. Each chocolate rugelach is about 2 bites, lighter than the kalachki but similar, rolled dough with chocolate. Pretty moist! Soft too. The dough is made with cream cheese and butter. Still prefer Bibi’s for rugelach.
Cheese bagels (3 for $3.90): These were big and soft. I like my bagels to be a lot chewier.
The bakery looks older but clean. Most things are labeled. They have a lot of chocolate items – e.g., chocolate danish, chocolate croissant, chocolate kalachki. Easy parking off Robertson.
