Schwartz Bakery, 12522 Burbank Blvd, Valley Village, CA 91607
Schwartz Bakery has multiple locations in LA. As the oldest kosher bakery in LA, Schwartz Bakery was established in 1954. It meets “the highest standards of kashruth.”
The Valley Village outpost is small and meant for takeout (there was no seating available). It sells bread, bagels, danishes, pastries, cookies, rugelach, biscotti, whole cakes, etc. There are three kinds of rugelach: cinnamon, chocolate chip, and chocolate chip with crumb, and many kinds of hamentashen. The pastries are not labeled and I didn’t see prices. The cookies and rugelach are sold by weight. They had some sugar-free items.
Chocolate chip rugelach (6 pieces for $11): These were larger and they were very good. The exterior was slightly crispy. The layered rugelach was moist and had abundant chocolate chips.
Baguette: long and wider than the norm, this is not a French style baguette. It was softer than that. I don’t think it was much better than what you’d get at a supermarket. It’s not as good as the baguettes you get at TJ’s. But then again, maybe it’s meant to be a different style of baguette?
Service was friendly.

Baking is a wonderful way to express your creativity, share your love, and enjoy delicious treats. But if you follow the kosher dietary laws
Angel Bakery & Café, 17928 Ventura Blvd, Encino, CA 91316
I remember this place used to have signs out front that said Angel Bakery. Those are gone…maybe they’re remodeling. Angel Bakery is a Kosher (Israeli) bakery. There were no signs/menus and the items in the glass display case had no labels or prices. I saw some rolls behind the counter but didn’t know what they were called (no signs).
Off to the left they had lots of cookies in plastic tubs. I spotted one bag of pita on the counter and rugelach in the case. I didn’t see any babka. There was a tray of premade sandwiches by the register (tuna, egg salad and eggplant/sabich).
Chocolate rugelach: Soft texture, moist. Wanted more chocolate flavor.
Israeli pita (5 for $6): Super thick, fluffy, and soft – so good
Sabich sandwich ($11): Footlong white roll, soft, with sesame seeds on top, premade, super thin slices of eggplant, sliced hard-boiled egg, tomato, cucumber, and a spicy spread. The roll was nice and soft. There was barely any eggplant. The sandwich was simple but good. Some herbs or hummus would have helped.
Angel Bakery items are sold at a few local kosher grocery stores and Cookbook Market (the boutique grocer).

Fred’s Bakery, 2831 Robertson Blvd, Los Angeles (Beverlywood), CA 90034
Fred’s Bakery is a kosher/parve bakery in Beverlywood, an area which had a strong Jewish presence (it looks like that presence is waning). They’ve been open since 1949. Fred’s specializes in challah bread, bagels, cakes, cookies, bread, babka, strudel, danish, scones, French and Eastern Europe pastries. They also have a deli case with salads and lox, sandwiches (made to order), shakshuka, Israeli breakfast, espresso, and drinks. The prices of the baked goods weren’t displayed.
Kalachki ($3.99): Looks like a chocolate crescent roll and it’s the size of a croissant – the kalachki features a heavier denser dough with cream cheese and butter. It’s basically a gigantic rugelach. You get a lot more for your money with the chocolate kalachki vs. the chocolate rugelach. More chocolate, more layers of chocolate and dough. I also detected a hint of orange peel. Enjoyed the crunch from pearl sugar, moist and dense interior, lots of chocolate. It was rich and not super sweet.
Rugelach (6 for $6.27): Sold by weight. Each chocolate rugelach is about 2 bites, lighter than the kalachki but similar, rolled dough with chocolate. Pretty moist! Soft too. The dough is made with cream cheese and butter. Still prefer Bibi’s for rugelach.
Cheese bagels (3 for $3.90): These were big and soft. I like my bagels to be a lot chewier.
The bakery looks older but clean. Most things are labeled. They have a lot of chocolate items – e.g., chocolate danish, chocolate croissant, chocolate kalachki. Easy parking off Robertson.

Mensch Bakery, 7122 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles (Fairfax), CA 90036
I was excited to try this Kosher bakery. The head baker is Israeli. Unfortunately, Yelp’s hours were wrong (they close at 4 PM during the summer and 2 PM during the winter, Yelp said they closed at 5 PM), so it was closed when I got there around 4:30 PM. I peered inside to see what it was like and someone inside was nice enough to let me in even though they were closed. There wasn’t much to choose from since they had packed things away. He told me the kitchen closed at 3 PM, an hour before they close the bakery. Ugh.
I spotted some eclairs and cakes in the case, muffins, and cookies. There were also some premade salads in the fridge. I probably chose the wrong things.
Chocolate chip cookie ($3): This was a huge thick cookie with lots of chocolate chips. I found it to be on the dry side though. It was a bit softer towards the middle. Almost biscotti like in terms of how dry and hard it was.
Double chocolate muffin ($3.50): Not bad but on the dry side again. There were tiny chocolate chips on top.
For breakfast, they have omelettes, shakshuka, breakfast burrito, Israeli breakfast, French toast, pancakes, and waffles. For lunch, they have salads, sandwiches, quiche, pizza, and pasta.
Service was very friendly. I wasn’t a fan of what I bought but I would be willing to try things like the babka and Israeli breakfast. Parking is tough in the area.

Continental Kosher Bakery, 12419 Burbank Blvd., Los Angeles (Valley Village), CA 91607
Old school and still owned by the same family decades later – this is the real deal. The family’s grandfather brought his recipes were from Russia and he opened a bakery in NYC in the 1920s. The Valley Village branch has been open at this location since 1962. This part of Valley Village is where you see the highest concentration of kosher businesses. Continental Bakery’s goods are kosher, dairy-free, peanut free and baked on site.
The bakery looks older but clean and well maintained. The menu is clearly posted with prices but the items in the case are not labeled. They have bread (challah, baguettes, etc.), danish, cookies (including black & white cookies), cakes, doughnuts, rugelach, babka (cinnamon & chocolate), eclairs, cream puffs, scones, etc. Vegan options are available. They also offer custom cakes.
Rugelach ($12/lb): Wish they had signs. I accidentally bought what I thought were cinnamon rugelach only to find apricot jam or something sweet inside. I don’t eat jam. The chocolate rugelach were thinner with fewer layers and more homestyle than the perfect looking rugelach at Bibi’s Bakery but very tasty. The chocolate that spilled out formed a crispy bottom. The rugelach were chock full of chocolate, soft with crunchy edges. I think they were sweeter than Bibi’s. I prefer Bibi’s.
Chocolate babka ($9.95/loaf): Thin layers with lots of chocolate between layers, not much crumb. It’s similar to rugelach but I like how rugelach is smaller.
Continental Bakery is in a strip mall with easy parking.
