Rock Climbing Controversy: Freesoloing
From all the photos that I have shot, the one that causes the most controversy is Chris Sierzant freesoloing "Chainsaw Massacre" 5.12a at the Motherlode in Red River Gorge, KY, 2008.
People who don't like what Sierzant is doing have said he is stupid, selfish, dangerous and will get crags shut down (access issues), etc.
People who like what he is doing have said this is amazing and inspirational (Those who said it was inspirational did not say they would then go out and free solo themselves). It takes a certain kind of head game and respect to execute this level of climbing and walk away.
Fact is, athletes often push the boundaries in whatever sport they are in. They want to achieve that next level. They may only want to achieve that goal for themselves or to take the sport collectively to a new level. Alex Honnold has set records on freesoloing Half Dome. Chris Sharma has been doing this for be the better part of a decade and now Adam Ondra is pushing these by climbing La Dura Dura 5.15c. Granted these climbers were using ropes, but they are pushing boundaries. Felix Baumgartner did just that when he jumped from the edge of space for the record of world highest skydive with the Redbull Stratos project. What about surfers who go into waters on the North Shore of Oahu when crests reach 55ft or more?
Curious what other people think...
