We are honored to have Sultana Khaya among the recipients of our Cultures of Resistance Awards!

Sultana is a Sahrawi human rights defender who is fighting to promote self-determination and to end violence against Sahrawi women. She has travelled internationally to participate in conferences and other events relating to the human rights situation in Western Sahara.​​

However, since November 2020, she and her family have been confined in their home and abused by Moroccan security forces. They have been poisoned, beaten, and sexually assaulted.​​

Sahrawi civil society is appealing to the international community and human rights advocates everywhere to defend the Khaya family and stand up for the right of everyone to live in peace and dignity.

بينما كان الرجال يقاتلون في صفوف الجيش الشعبي وعلى جبهات مختلفة تارة ضد جنود العرش المغربي وتارة أخرى ضد جنود الجيش الموريتاني، كانت النسوة الصحراويات يقمن بدور لا يقل أهمية عن حرب التحرير التي يخوضها المقاتلين، قمن بإنشاء مؤسسات الدولة الإفريقية الفتية أنذاك، وبناء بيوت وخيام ومدارس لأطفال لم يروا أبائهم منذ إنطلاق الثورة بأرض الساقية الحمراء ووادي الذهب ضد الإستعمار الإسباني ومن بعده المحتل المغربي الغاشم وأفكار ملكه التوسعية. هؤلاء النسوة الصحراويات منهن من قطعن مئات الكيلومترات على الأقدام هرباً من قنابل محرمة دولياً تتساقط عليهم من السماء، وآخريات فقدن أطفالهن وأزواجهن، لكن ذلك لم ينقص مع عزيمتهن مقدار ذرة رمل، بل وضعن البنادق على أكتافهن والفأس والمجرف بيديهن. كل ما تزخر به الدولة الصحراوية من إنتصارات ديبلوماسية يعود فضله لله أولاً ولهن، فمنهن الوزيرات والسفيرات ونائبات بالبرلمان الإفريقي وولات. #بالبندقية_ننال_الحرية #freewesternsahara
