berlin, 2004: a project was started to bring the fifties and sixties back to life on a global scale. Photoautomat grew from a simple idea to restore and maintain the original black and white photo booths in a world that had forgotten, but since embraced the quality and nostalgia of these classic photographs. #mavmusic #photoautomat #berlin #mavinberlin #freidrichshain #eastsidegallery (at East Side Gallery)
Fr. Mai 5 - Sa. Mai 6:
Perusing listings for local nightlife, I come across an advertisement for a Smiths/Morrissey tribute night at a joint called Rosi’s and decide this would be the perfect antidote to cabin fever. I fortify myself with a little Deutsche courage in the form of Aldi’s €0.99 white wine (again surprisingly drinkable) whilst performing my toilette to a suitably-themed musical backdrop. Absorbing the lyrics to How Soon Is Now? and Death Of A Disco Dancer, with the activities ahead in mind, I think for the first time in my life that perhaps I should listen to something a tad cheerier - Shed Seven it is!
Apprehensive upon arrival, this being my first time clubbing solo, I quickly feel right at home - Rosi’s is a sprawling little dive, the music’s right up my street, and with my red shoes on I dance like everyone’s watching and I couldn’t care less. Wandering from nook to cranny I rapidly make a string of friends and lose them again. At some point a piano is played. Oddly, tonight marks the first time I’ve ever been asked ‘are you a red or a blue?’ upon mentioning I’m from Manchester, a question which crops up a good number of times. It’s closely followed by 'Manchester or Greater Manchester?’ - I’m unsure of the significance but people seem very keen to establish this fact.
The night turns out to be an all-nighter, and true to my principles I’m still going strong when they kick the stragglers out come 7am.
