In defense of that stinky white man (from the "well actually-" 'leftist' white folks)

||| So, let me be clear, this post is not about Paul Thomas Anderson. Critics of the film and it's writing might be deceived by the title. This is absolutely about the white, male lead "Ghetto" Pat Calhoun. Calhoun is in a near constant state of dishevelment and is later re-christened as 'Bob' with a new identity (real and fake) as a single father in NorCal. If you haven’t seen Anderson’s newest release I recommend scrolling past this review entirely.

A majority of what I mention will no doubt be spoilers -but more importantly- the opinions and observations below would be best experienced first hand for yourself. Too many folks these days create iron-clad opinions via the osmosis of tiktok comments. If you're going to hate something, do it authentically and watch the movie! Worried about supporting an artist that may be against your ethics (NOT TASTE)? Then hold your tongue till you can pirate the film. If you feel that's wrong (I would) in the scheme of stolen art, afterwards, then donate the cost of a movie ticket to the Screen Writers Guild.

The two hour and 41 minute movie -slated as comedy and action- uses intricate and blunt metaphors to comment on American political and social realities.

It's clearly written by someone with a great deal of fear, an awareness of their own incompetence but a long view for the generations of effort required to create change. Ultimately, it is full of heart and hope for a new day. A mindset I also find crucial to parenting.

But back to that STINKY white man, Bob. I say stinky because I'd bet he uses natural deodorant, smells like sweat and whatever organic, ditch weed he smokes.

There are worthwhile critiques of how race is written in this movie. If you've seen the movie go seek them out. However, I adamantly disagree with the swaths of people who say Bob was not a revolutionary and or stopped being one after Willa was born and he relocated to NorCal. The way Bob continuously loved his daughter was in fact RADICAL. The short conversation they had prior to her dance (where she rightfully pointed out his dangerous faults ie drinking and driving) and he emotionally validated her was RADICAL. The small moments that make up a life are in fact the foundation of it. Bob attending his kids parent teacher conference and arguing about propagandized curriculum was RADICAL. The teacher remarks that Willa's a leader, smart and confident! This matters - the time and quality of how the next generation is raised should matter to any self proclaimed 'revolutionary'.

The way he preserved the memory of Willa's mother for her -though a lie in some ways- was thoughtful and kind. Particularly because he and the others were given up to the feds. We even hear Bob say, that one day, he hoped Perfidia would show up at their door. She was never shown to be some picturesque, perfect mother to Willa and was actually heavily implied to be suffering from post-partum. Bob misses the person he knew -not an idealized co-parent- he does not resent or think of her as a 'rat' - as the other call her. Bob holds no personally punitive emotions or actions towards her. This is radical, love and forgiveness are RADICAL.

(I have an entire separate post in mind for how Perfidia is spoken of by the ensemble characters and viewers online. She is often, wrongly, spoken of as a turncoat. But the foreboding element of her arrest began when the cops took selfies with her in the wheelchair. There was no scenario in which she was not grievously maimed or possibly killed in prison. The movie wasn't focused on her but she is so vital to it; I see critique about wanting more of her story, I feel some is not well directed at Anderson. But instead at the industry itself for not green lighting and funding that type of movie - because that is an entirely different movie and plot line focus.)

Perfidia burns hot with well placed righteousness -this is needed for the never ending revolution. She gave birth to the next generation, Willa, and Bob with his privilege to survive the skirmishes (despite less broad talents) raised that generation with love. To be better than than the last - better than himself. Because that's what all elders should be doing; teaching and including kids in the work.

The quiet work of loving one another every day is quite radical; online insistence that Bob isn't x or y because he no longer fits the idea of 'cool' or wasn't useful 24/7 doesn't mean his actions didn't have value to the 'greater cause'. Raising 'future radicals' matters a great deal! The 'enemy' you're up against is massive and in a way the work never ends.

is  CUPID'S  SANGRIA  struggling  to  return  to  future  in  laws  good  graces?  FRENCH  75  spotted  cozying  up  to  her  brother's  ex  outside  the  palace,  we  have  to  wonder  if  there's  bad  blood  leftover  -  and  if  so,  on  whose  side?

on  a  night  out  FIREBALL  MULE  spotted  snapping  at  fellow  guests  for  ....  breathing?  girl  if  you  need  help,  blink  twice.

i  didn't  have  it  on  my  bingo  card  that  2026  was  the  year  of  going  back  to  our  exes  -  but  APEROL  SPRITZ  proves  us  wrong  once  more.  VELVET  HAMMER  is  hot  and  all,  but  didn't  jlo  prove  it  doesn't  work?

BOULEVARDIER  is  left  with  a  large  bill  despite  the  so-called  'all  expenses  paid  trip'  due  to  damages  made  to  their  hotel  suite  beyond  what  was  covered  in  the  security  deposit.  wonder  just  what  they  did?

country  bumpkin  VODKA  CRANBERRY  proves  once  more  that  etiquette  lessons  should  be  a  must  before  being  added  to  the  guest  list.  close  your  mouth,  sweetie.  you'll  catch  flies.

NAKED  AND  FAMOUS  and  TEQUILA  NEAT  being  sickeningly  sweet  all  over  badrutt's  palace,  it  screams  damage  control  before  they  hit  the  road  of  an  ugly  public  divorce

NEGRONI  sucking  up  to  FRENCH  75  and  faking  a  friendship  ?  some  people  really  are  that  desperate  to  make  it  to  the  top  of  the  food  chain.

TUXEDO  caught  sneaking  off  to  the  hot  springs  with  GOODNIGHT  KISS,  somehow  i  don't  think  the  water  was  the  only  steamy  thing  out  there.

hasn't  anyone  told  DIRTY  SHIRLEY  that  tequila  is  a  recipe  for  disaster  and  in  combination  with  GOLD  RUSH  ?  let's  hope  there  won't  be  a  baby  shower  in  a  few  months  time

VESPER  and  HIGHBALL  spotted  horseback  riding  into  the  sunset  together.  should  we  expect  an  announcement  soon  or  will  the  fairytale  end  when  they’re  back  to  reality?

ELDERFLOWER  SPRITZ,  please,  there’s  people  that  are  dying  and  you  are  ugly  crying  while  demanding  that  the  staff  goes  back  down  the  mountain  to  find  your  lost  diamond  earring.  

BETWEEN  THE  SHEETS  and  HURRICANE  spotted  cozying  up  on  the  ski  lift,  do  we  see  a  reunion  incoming  or  just  poor  timing  in  their  lineup?

whoever  told  WHISKEY  SOUR  that  being  a  sloppy  drunk  and  having  the  concierge  carry  you  to  their  bedroom  was  trending  needs  to  be  sued.  have  some  class,  this  is  not  the  2000s.

pretending  not  to  know  where  you  can  get  drugs  ?  oh  RASPBERRY  LEMONADE,  nobody  believes  your  little  act  you’re  putting  on,  we  all  know  authors  do  fieldwork  and  sample  the  goods.

is  BLOOD  &  SAND  shopping  around  for  the  perfect  mrs?  unlikely.  word  of  advice,  if  you're  gonna  be  a  player  don't  make  it  so  obvious  -  especially  not  with  a  technically  married  woman.

Me realizing that rapper Junglepussy (aka Shayna McHayle) played one of the French 75 in "One Battle After Another". I recognized her voice and face, but couldn't put my finger on where I knew her from, lol!
