This chest of drawers, its form and decoration awash in scrolls and curves, is a masterpiece of mid-1700s English Rococo. The chest’s innovative design is based on a “French commode table” illustrated in Thomas Chippendale’s highly influential pattern book "The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director," first published in 1754. The quality of the craftsmanship suggests the chest was made by a skilled cabinetmaker; however, it remains unclear if that was Chippendale himself.
