Well, here's my oldcoins fleamarketfinds today. I paid $35 for fifty-six coins from lots of parts of the world. They were in tubs and trays from a seller that had all sorts of stuff. But these were mostly under jewelry. I think I overpaid on some. But I got some that looked cool and a few are quite old. There's some I've only seen in pictures online. But I guess it's alright. They're new things for my collection.

When Napoleon was banished to Elba in 1814 due to conditions laid out in the Treaty of Fontainebleu, he was crowned King of Elba and allotted an annual pension of two million francs (which was apparently never paid). This issue lasted less than a year, concluding with Napoleon's escape from Elba.
Now, when I read this I knew immediately what I had to do... convert his pension to today's money!!
First I went over to my favorite handy dandy inflation rate calculator. I found that 1 French francs (FF) from the year 1814 is equivalent to 160.8479 dollars (USD) in the year 2015. I chose to use the relative worth because I find it to be generally more accurate for historical currency conversions, since it takes into consideration purchasing power and changes in cost of living over time. See the output from this calculator here:
Note that the data in the Swedish calculator does not go past 2015, so I have to do a separate conversion to bring the number fully up to date. Thus I went to my other favorite inflation calculator, which is entirely USD based, and found 1 USD in 2015 equals 1.29 USD in 2023. See here:
With all this together, we find 1 FF in 1814 equals 207.4938 USD in 2023. Multiplying further, we find the answer to the original question:
Napoleon's annual pension of two million francs in 1814 would be worth 414,987,582 USD in 2023. That's nearly half a billion dollars! Math is fun.
