On a more serious note, the most important thing that I can offer is to not be afraid to use references. I don’t feel that I’m good enough to warrant any sort of authority on giving art advice of any kind, but I feel ok talking about this because I’m repeating the words of super great practicing professional artists who really stress this point. Using references is nothing to be ashamed of, because none of us are born knowing how to draw something exactly the way that it looks. While enough practice means that we won’t be as reliant on references, there will always be something that we won’t know how to draw, but our guide is right there all around us. I used to think that “no references used” was something to brag about when it comes to a piece of art, but I learned that this can actually be detrimental. For instance, I see a lot of fellow artists-in-training that take offense when someone suggests that they use references (because quite frankly, they really need it >_>), and that’s the kind of mentality to stay away from because it just hurts us in the long term.

The other thing that I don’t think would be presumptuous of me to offer is the importance of drawing what you love. Heck, this is true for more than just art, a person is a lot more likely to succeed at doing something they love. For a long time, I was ashamed of the kind of things I like to draw, and still am to no small degree. I wish that what I enjoy drawing isn’t so... “tingly”, to put it lightly, but it can’t be helped. I wish that I enjoyed drawing women more, since I have trouble depicting beautiful or  compelling women. I wish I was into drawing cute animals or gorgeous landscapes, and drew them all day instead. I struggle a great deal with even starting to draw, because I’m nervous about how my stuff will be received, and I’m ashamed of where my skill level is at, so it turns into a really bad negative feedback cycle. It is very very bad, don’t be like me. :P I know it’s easier said than done, but draw what you love.

In all seriousness, imo, Drizzt doesn’t exactly show himself in the most positive light in Timeless, which is impressive given that he isn’t even in most of the book. Spoilers ahead!

Other than the usual sanctimony and preachiness that is his trademark, Drizzt shows a large amount of hypocrisy and immaturity. Zak’s having a really difficult time adjusting to everything and Drizzt cuts him zero slack, and of course just earlier in the book he sermonizes about the importance of empathy as well as lauds himself for how far he’s come in understanding everything. Drizzt goes so far as to start a physical fight with Zak literally at the dinner table because Zak isn’t able to accept things as quickly as Drizzt wants him to.

The thing that causes the conflict between Zak and Drizzt is that Zak is very much indoctrinated into the whole “drow are superior to other races” mindset. Even though Zak doesn’t want to kill innocent iblith, he still sees them as iblith. He has a hard time accepting Catti-brie as the mate of his son and the mother of his grandchildren and he feels that he can’t look at said grandchildren with anything but pity because they represent the dilution of his seed with inferior stuff. Regardless, he’s trying to reconcile himself to all of it. He can’t stop himself from being surprised and disbelieving about Drizzt’s union with Catti, but he never does anything as outrageous as calling Catti “iblith”. However, Drizzt tries to force Zak into saying that he sees Catti and all of their friends as iblith. Zak isn’t willing to do so and Drizzt literally throws a fit at that, breaking the dinner table and smashing all the food that Catti worked hard to prepare for them. 

I can certainly understand Drizzt taking a hard line as far as his wife and friends are concerned, but I feel that he was really unfair to Zak. I can understand that it’s supposed to be an overwhelming time for him, but it’s an overwhelming time for Zak as well, and Zak shows much more grace and restraint (and he’s not the one preaching about empathy). Furthermore, I can’t help but feel like Drizzt acted like an ungrateful little shit because Zak literally sacrificed everything for him - twice - without so much of a second thought, but Drizzt can’t/won’t even try to put himself in Zak’s shoes. Sure, I can understand that Drizzt had put Zak up on a pedestal and the reality is different from his fantasy but it’s fundamentally his own fault for having built up that fantasy. He says that he realizes this, yet still acts in that asinine manner. Moreover, even though this has more to do with Catti than it does with Drizzt, Catti is much more understanding and patient, and actually tries to work with Zak to slowly reconcile him to the new reality. I just can’t get over how immature Drizzt is, he’s 190 years old by this point and he’s supposed to be one of the most experienced characters in the Realms, yet he’s still such a freaking manchild. -_-

Come to think of it though, this is pretty consistent with Drizzt’s usual behavior of not trying to understand where someone else is coming from. He applied the same process to Artemis, where he just decided that Artemis was such and such, and the best thing for him was to become such and such. I hated it but I could understand why he would be that way with an enemy, but with Zak... it’s his father FFS!!! Just, ugh. I don’t get how anyone thinks Drizzt is the symbol of everything good and heroic. ]]
