Prompt thingie. A little AU in wich Makoto is asked by the school to stop being Iwatobi's captain after the relay with Rin, because they think it was his responsibility to keep his teammates on check and he failed. School honor and all that. And then Rin finds out... (I'm so sorry...)
There’s a giant sucking black hole somewhere in the vicinity of where his stomach should be when he hears the news from Gou. She’s much calmer than he feels she should be but she’s had a few hours to absorb the shock. Plus she’s always been better at dealing with this kind of stuff. But still. All his emotions seem to be tackling each other and dragging themselves through the mud in an attempt to come out on top. He feels guilty and sad and outraged and panicked all at once.
Makoto had been asked to step down as captain and it was all Rin’s fault. All because of the stupid relay and his stupid insecurities and hang ups and his stupid need to swim with them again. He knew it wasn’t like Mako was being told he couldn’t swim anymore or anything but it still wasn’t fair. Their advisor could only take so much of the blame because, especially with such a small team, it was the captain’s responsibility to oversee his teammates and to properly represent the school.
So it’s with a churning stomach and a heavy hand that he knocks on the Tachibana’s door and waits. When Makoto’s mom answers she gives him a warm smile and waves him inside, telling him Makoto’s in his room as he toes off his shoes and sets them neatly against the wall. He’s already debating shoving his feet back into his shoes and bolting when Makoto’s mom calls out to him that he has a visitor and gently nudges Rin towards the hallway. When Makoto steps into the hallway he seems surprised to see Rin but he gestures for Rin to come join him in his room.
“They can’t do that to you!” Rin nearly shouts and he takes a sharp breath when he realizes how loud he is. "It’s just not fair.“
“It sucks but I can understand the reasoning.” Makoto sits on his bed and leans against the wall hugging a pillow to his chest. He drops his chin on it with a sigh. "I have to be held accountable for my actions.“
"But they weren’t your actions.”
“Being the captain means I am accountable for anything me team does. Even if there’s just us four and Gou. I’m still responsible for all of us.”
“But it’s my fault.” Rin doesn’t want to sound angry at Mako and he doesn’t want to sound like he’s whining. He’s afraid he’s failing on both counts.
Makoto simply tilts his head and gives him that damn sweet smile that says Rin is being adorably simple and missing the point. "And I’m sure Captain Mikoshiba is taking responsibility for your actions. I’m taking responsibility for my team’s actions. It’ll be okay, Rin.“ Rin just glares at him. Makoto holds his gaze for a minute and then turns his attention to his blanket, idly tracing patterns with one hand. The other was still holding the pillow against his chest.
"Shit,” Rin mutters a couple minutes later when Makoto’s words about Mikoshiba sink in. He knew the captain had done a lot of apologizing and had been forced to attend a number of meetings in regards to Rin’s stunt but he hadn’t really thought about just what those meetings might have entailed. Makoto is giving him a questioning look and Rin flushes. "Is now a good time to apologize because I am apparently an incredibly selfish asshole who probably doesn’t deserve to be friends with any of you?“ Makoto’s mom knocks on the door just then and asks if Rin would like to stay and eat supper with them. Rin meets Makoto’s gaze and Makoto smiles at him and nods encouragingly. "Sure. That would be great.”
After his mom leaves Makoto scoots to the edge of his bed and motions Rin towards him. When Rin is in range Makoto reaches out and flicks him in the forehead. "You never needed to apologize to me. But it is appreciated. So stop worrying over it.“
"But you being captain-” Rin cuts off when Makoto reaches up to flick him again.
“They never said it was permanent. My guess is I write the essay they want from me explaining my actions and responsibilities and I’ll have the captain title again within a couple weeks. We’ll be fine.” Makoto leans back on his bed with a thoughtful hum. "You should maybe do the whole apologizing thing with Captain Mikoshiba if you haven’t already though.“
"I’m working on that,” Rin mutters. "I have a lot of apologies to make it seems.“
"You’ll be fine.” Makoto sounds more confident than Rin feels but he still returns Makoto’s smile and nods.
As he sits down with Makoto’s family to eat he realizes that his stomach has stopped it’s black hole level of panic and for that he’s grateful and it’s ninety percent all thanks to Makoto.
Just one more thing he’d have to properly thank his friend for someday.
