🐸 Froggy: A Pond Full of Pals! by Paige Walshe

It is time for Froggy to leave his pond family and travel downstream to find a pond of his own. Lily pad ready, snacks packed, Froggy is going on an adventure where he’ll meet new friends!

This book was equal parts whimsical, cute, and hilarious. I loved the narrator and seeing Froggy interact with fish (Fishtopher), a Wizard, bees (Buzzter), and so much more! His adventures were fun and lighthearted, and sometimes dark, like when a human steals Fishtopher from the water and Froggy swears to enact revenge for his friend by having the monsters of the woods teach him how to bite.

I saw that in July of this year, a SECOND book is going to be released called “Froggy: Autumn Antics”, which I’m dying to read.

🐸 The Book of the Frog by Sally Coulthard

This book is brimful of extraordinary facts and shows how frogs have conquered some of the most challenging terrain on the planet, from the Arctic to the South African desert. Sally Coulthard explores many types of frogs from around the world, many of which face conservation challenges.

Most books on frogs that I’ve found are more on the guide book end of things, or animal photography books. I was very excited to find this, hoping to learn about frogs and see how special and different they really are. I was not mistaken.

This book captures the beauty of our anuran neighbors, introducing us to frogs and toads from our backyard to national parks to different frogs from all over the world. And you’d be surprised at how far and wide anurans go! One thing I find frustrating with a lot of nature books that bring up conservation is that they never show you a solution or a way you can help. They just end by saying, “this animal/plant/being will probably go extinct if this keeps up”, but I always wonder, what can I do?

Sally Coulthard, after each chapter, gives us examples of how we can help frogs. She describes making frog homes, backyard ponds, conservation efforts you can join, and shares how the exotic pet trade is a huge stressor on frog populations. I finished the book, not feeling depressed and helpless, but inspired to do what I can for my froggy friends.
