17: things you said that i wish you hadnt

There were many, many things that Matt could’ve said after getting wasted with Foggy and showing up at Claire’s apartment at three in the morning. “I love you” was not one of them.

It was a general rule that when you went out to get drunk with your friends, you didn’t take five shots and show up at your other friend’s apartment at three in the morning to profess your undying love. Matt knew that. At least, he thought he did.

Karen and Foggy decided to go bar hopping, so they picked up Matt, and despite his head telling him not to, he went along. Foggy tried to match him shot for shot, and promptly threw up in the bathroom. Karen had at least three glasses of whiskey and wouldn’t stop giggling. Matt just felt plain invincible. Which is why, four hours later, he found himself at Claire’s front door.

Claire looked very surprised and very tired and very amused. Matt felt very intoxicated and very alive and very ready, for what he didn’t know, but ready all the same.

“Claaaaaiiiiirrrreee,” Matt drawled. He had honestly never been this drunk. He didn’t know whether to laugh or be very embarrassed. He settled for laughing.

Claire decided on the same option. “Matt? It’s three in the morning. Are you drunk?”

“Noooooo, nonononono, I’m fine, I’m good, verrrrry very good.”

“Okay, maybe you should sit down.” Claire led him to her couch,  the same one he had laid on when she found him that night lying in the dumpster.

Matt felt himself drifting off, and just before he slipped into unconsciousness, he heard Claire heading back down the hall. “Wait!” he started. “Wait wait wait, I had something to tell you, it’s really important. Come here.” She looked equal parts amused and exhausted. “Closer, closer come on.”

When she was in range, Matt reached out his hands to touch her face. He felt her heartbeat thrumming under his fingertips. “I love you Claire. So much, sooooo much.”

“Okay Matt, get some sleep, alright?”

“No no, I mean it! You’re the best,  like……the BEST.”

“Right, Matt,  I love you too. Goodnight.”

Through the fog in his brain, he only had one thought: he wished she meant it.
