Alright Cass, this is a bit of a weird question, but do you already have any idea of how you’d write certain characters you haven’t actually written for yet? Like what their kinks would be, if they’d be hard or soft, how they’d treat Y/N, stuff like that? I’d love to hear how you interpret some people :)

hi! do you have any writing tips on how to make a really great smut scene? and how not to be overly repetitive (with different scenes)?

since my fics are so long, i definitely do think there’s a fair amount of repetition in my smut scenes (both individually and across fics). it’s hard to avoid, especially as you get into a groove. there are certain phrases that you’ll lean to just because they feel comfortable or natural. and that’s totally fine !! that’s a part of what makes you distinct as a writer, and people who like your writing style definitely won’t mind some repetition!

but here are a couple of things that keep my smut fresh (hopefully LMAO) —

most of my fics are written in a slightly different style because i try to match the writing to the subject matter. so, for example, initiation + conversations with the devil are both pretty dark. i tried to write them both in a pretty straightforward and grungy way that would better showcase their dark nature if that makes sense? so there are a lot of clipped sentences and blunt, to the point analyses scattered throughout. 

for the smut in a darker fic, i write it dirtier than i would normally. (’cunt’ instead of ‘pussy’, ‘hole’ instead of ‘slit’. you get the point.) it’s more descriptive in a carnal way — focusing almost solely on the way the body reacts and every physical craving. but for something softer, like the lifeguard kiri fic, i tried to write things more sensually? so i focused more on expressions + sensations in a way that’s more descriptive than blunt.

i have a distinct style, of course, but there are a lot of variations across my fics. i think tweaking your style here and there helps to add variety and keep things interesting.

with all that being said, i think the most pivotal part of smut writing (at least for me) is tension building. it’s my favorite part to write !!! it can really add another dimension to the filth. if you can get people worked up before the clothes even come off, then the smut hits even harder.

buildup is fun because there are countless ways to write sexual tension. infinite scenarios that you can concoct for characters to get horny for each other lmao. and none of that has to be overtly sexual. you’ll never run out of material for that. whereas with the smut itself, there are only so many ways you can write “he put his dick in her pussy” before you get tired. :>

i do!

i write long fics with a lot of plot. more plot gives you more time to solidify the relationship between two characters. intimate scenes, shared experiences, small moments. all of that comes together to build feeling & connection between characters.

try to include some flirting too? develop it like a natural, realistic relationship. think about how things would evolve in real life to lead to sex. stolen glances and light touches, stuff like that. you can go into detail about what the characters are thinking about one another. are they checking each other out? fantasizing?

smut hits hardest for me when there's some feeling behind it. some pining that leads up to it !!
