October 2023: Things In The Light
Ozzy & the Vorpal Bunny by solar light:
Hi, it’s been a while since I posted so here is a 1 year development of my frontyard border (dry and shady growing conditions):
29/7/2020
My frontyard border is looking so great. Some plants died so I’ll be replacing them in September. Gaura lindheimeri ‘Whirling butterflies’ blooming now and Macleaya microcarpa ‘Kelway’s Coral Plume’ will be blooming soon too. In a few weeks Ceratostigma plumbaginoides will start blooming with bright blue flowers

Frost expected tonight.
No one wants to see the shame of a garden..
I found this link via @emiliotheway. I think it's actually pretty cool that someone would use the space in front of their home for a garden. Why is it that just because it's in front of the house, it's bad?
WE are that really sweet family! we fixed the damage in the flooded basement, dug up the entire front lawn, removed the roots, replaced the sewer pipe (which was damaged by the city’s tree, please remember), and were left with mountainous heaps of dirt where our front lawn used to be. we did some reading, did some thinking, and decided to use the space from the former front lawn and turn it into a beautiful garden. .... and nothing in any way offensive- unless you count- drum roll, please- now astonished GASP… vegetable plants! yes, we have trashed the neighborhood by planting such oddities as tomatoes, red peppers, and cucumbers. we have ruined morale in this fine locale by causing urban blight of mass proportions by planting peas, green beans, and carrots.
The best part is the argument by the city of Oak Park MI's Planning and Technology Director Kevin Rulkowski, is that the city code says that all unpaved portions of the site shall be planted with grass or ground cover or shrubbery or other suitable live plant material. Kevin Rulkowski takes the meaning of suitable as meaning common. Which most people with a grasp on the english language will know that suitable and common are not the same thing.
Kevin Rulkowski states, “If you look at the dictionary, suitable means common. You can look all throughout the city and you’ll never find another vegetable garden that consumes the entire front yard.”
suit·a·ble - adjective such as to suit; appropriate; fitting; becoming.
com·mon - adjective belonging equally to, or shared alike by, two or more or all in question: common property; common interests.
I think anyone that wants to have their own garden, it would be very suitable for them to do it in soil. No matter where that soil is located on their property.
I wonder what dictionary Kevin Rulkowski uses?
