“Sokka,” Zuko says, his tone serious, and when Sokka meets his eyes and sees the sadness there he shakes his head furiously.

“No, do not give me that look,” Sokka tells him sternly, his shaking hands still pressing their sheets into Zuko’s side, staining them with an even darker shade of their usual red. “You’re going to be okay, Zuko, the healer is on her way, you’ll be fine, just breathe, okay?”

“Sokka,” Zuko repeats, and the weakness in his voice shuts Sokka up immediately. “I love you.”

That had been the last thing Zuko said before falling asleep in Sokka’s arms just hours earlier, his soft “I love you” bringing a smile to Sokka’s face that stayed with him in sleep. Now, the phrase has a tone of finality that makes Sokka feel like he is the one who got stabbed by the would-be assassin. Seriously, as nice as it was to have guards within screaming range who ran in and stopped him before the job could be finished, Sokka was starting to feel really upset that they didn’t keep some sort of healer right outside their door as well. It hasn’t even been a minute since someone ran for her, but every passing second sinks the feeling of dread further into his heart. 

Sokka squeezes his eyes shut, but when they open, the tears still fall freely. “I love you too, I love you so much, Zuko.

Zuko frowns, looking confused. “Don’t cry.”

Sokka lets out a sob. "I’m trying, sweetheart, you just have to stay with me, okay? Can you do that for me, babe?”

“Anything for you,” Zuko mumbles, but his eyes are slowly falling shut. 

“No, Zuko, damn it, don’t close your eyes, you can’t leave me!” Sokka cries desperately.

Zuko opens his eyes long enough to give Sokka a sad frown. “’M sorry.”

He closes his eyes again and Sokka feels like he can’t breathe, like his world has frozen completely. He stares in shock at the strangely peaceful expression on Zuko’s face for just a few seconds before the healer marches in the room, still in her pajamas, a determined look on her face as she opens the pouch of water in her hands. 

“Move,” she snaps to Sokka. Sokka makes room for her to kneel on the bed at Zuko’s side, his hands slick with Zuko’s blood as he holds his husband’s hand in both of his own and watches the healer work until Zuko’s shallow breaths become more steady, his hand feels less cold, and Sokka realizes this wasn’t goodbye.

ambassador sokka my beloved <3 i’ve def already talked about it a few times before but fuck it, let’s go

so this one takes place a couple years after the war, when sokka is 18 years old. zuko asks for a representative from the swt to act as ambassador, and sokka volunteers. my notes for this one are kind of a mess but basically it focuses on all the ways that sokka struggles during his first year as ambassador. none of zuko’s ministers take him seriously, ppl are racist, it’s too hot, he’s homesick, he has nightmares... it’s mainly about him trying to find a sense of purpose after the war, when it feels like everyone around him has moved on/doesn’t rlly need him anymore

i don’t have anything rlly written for this yet beyond the first line, which is nothing spectacular lol
