Fairy Tail Worldbuilding: Kardia Cathedral
For canon information you can look at the Wiki page. But basically this is the place that is featured during the Battle of Fairy Tail arc.
It is woefully underused in fanfiction, so I thought it would be interesting to try and expand on what we have in canon by using information about real-world Cathedrals.
What is it used for?
Primarily meant to hold religious, civic, and social functions. (So other than the usual weddings and funerals, it could hold a thanksgiving service on Harvest Festival day after/before the parade.)
The bells can be used to convey information or celebrations to the entire town of Magnolia. According to Wikipedia, “ringing of peals signifies a time of rejoicing, such as a wedding. An extended ringing of peals or "changes" conveys a time of great civic celebration. The slow tolling of the deepest bell signifies a death or disaster. The bells of a cathedral are traditionally used to signal the outbreak and the ending of war.”
Could be a tourist spot for Magnolia because cathedrals are usually the oldest buildings in town.
A place where Magnolia’s history is stored and shared through the paintings, art, plaques, and other things in the cathedral (and maybe even in it’s cemetery).
Architecture Notes
Looking at real world cathedrals, it would be the most imposing building in town- in terms of height and scale. (To keep old town official happy, maybe Fairy Tail doesn’t try to outdo the Cathedral’s size when they rebuild.)
There are lots of sculptures inside and out, detailed artwork on the walls and maybe even the ceiling. Maybe even some fancy floor tiles. Also stained glass are rather common in cathedrals. (Are there tons of artists who visit and show up to help during renovations and rebuilding?)
Things to Think about
Are there religious leaders? Just how big a part does religion play in the town/community? Do they collect a fee from the guild?
What is the view of religion on magic and vice versa? Are there/ could there be tensions between them?
