Whatever possessed her to wear the tiny dress on Valentine’s day was now completely beyond Amy, as she sniffled her way into the local pharmacy on her way from work. Her nose had been running all day, she had sneezed more times than she could count, and she was fairly certain a fever was breaking her spirit, slowly and persistently. It might have been too late to fight the impending doom of the cold, but she figured she’d at least try, loading up on cough drops, aspirin, and ibuprofen. Always the multitasker, she was trying to stuff her wallet back into her bag while leaving the store, her purchase hanging off her wrist in a plastic bag. She set foot on the street without paying much attention to where she was going, walking right into an oncoming stranger, effectively dropping the wallet on the ground, her bag sliding down her forearm to pile up on her wrist. “Shit,” she cursed under her breath, voice made all the raspier and more nasal by the cold. “Sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
